Hobbies outside of SC2

I am trying to find a new hobby I can do outside of SC2 (and gaming in general) but I am at a loss of what to do. What do all of you do while you aren't on the PC/at work/school? I am pretty well up for anything at this point as all I find myself doing is working and wasting time on reddit/fb/sc2. What makes you love your hobby?

Re: Hobbies outside of SC2

You could possibly learn to play an instrument (e.g. a guitar) or read a book. I know some guys take up a sport or hit the gym.

My love for music has turned into something I can do for work. Chase is learning to play impressive pieces on the guitar and puts it up for all of us to share. Books are always great. And some of the guys hit the gym, e.g. rico for those... *ahem*, desired manly features to be proud of. Some other guys play cricket, tennis etc.

I'm sure you'll be able to find something out there that is not computer related as well, as a hobby. It can be pretty rewarding.

Take up skateboarding, rollerblading, bmx or other and hit up a skate park?
Another option could be downhill mountain biking.

Learn a language, play Dungeon and Dragons (If you really want to get your nerd on), get into Magic the Gathering: TCG, Rockclimbing, Hiking/camping, build models of stuff... Most importantly I think is music or something creative like short story writing.

In winter I referee rugby union, keeps me fit and it's a good feeling giving something back to the community, seeing as it's not paid work, in fact we pay to do it! A lot of people don't realise this. Plus it's actually good for communication skills as you have to manage 30 players, plus the sidelines.

team sport imo. while it can be frustrating, its good to work with other people, and theres a lot of good sports. socialising and exercising at the same time. esp if youre sitting at the comp a lot. also best to get into sport at school, its harder at uni (but still possible of course)

Re: Hobbies outside of SC2

Few things I do outside of Starcraft:

- I'm learning Chinese at uni. I do a Forensic Science course and I just really wanted to learn something entirely different so I decided to learn a language. ...I didn't want to learn French or Spanish and was about to do Japanese external but that's too much effort (I drive to my uni, and the Japanese class is at another one right in the city where it's impossible to find parking) and the uni announced they'd have Chinese classes starting this year so I jumped at the chance. So far I'm loving it, it's heaps of fun to learn a new language and I actually enjoy writing Chinese characters more than I write in English. Of course, I'm still really poor at it and on a learning process, but I'm getting there lol. Find a language, and learn it as much as you can; it's always good to know another one.

- I read manga a lot, I can't ever stand reading a novel so I just resorted to reading a manga and I gotta say it's turned out really well and became a hobby of mine.

- I'm in to cars quite a lot so I tend to read about them often; but mainly about the one I own so I learn/read about what I can do to it and what I can't do to it. You'd be surprised at finding out what you can do and what you learn about your car when you do things like these, it's really enjoyable. (not sure if you own one, but if you do I'd definitely give this one a go). Also going out for a drive once in a while is really nice to do.

- Play a sport; doesn't matter if you don't know how to play at the start or not, it's a good learning experience, and along the way you meet new people and also have fun.

- Find an exercise habit to get fit or keep your fitness up.

I play soccer, and go to the gym 3 - 5 times a week. It feels great and man, I've been stress free ever since I've started. Plus, I feel better than ever!

Re: Hobbies outside of SC2

Learn an instrument! it will require discipline and training (just like your beloved Starcraft) but at the end you will be able to woo the ladies with your sensual and skilful playing. ( not as much like Starcraft... unless you are GM)

Re: Hobbies outside of SC2

Sport or gymming (or even learning a martial art) is a good alternate hobby for gamers since you're not sitting at a desk and it helps with stress and makes you feel healthier/happier. Or you could learn guitar or something.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I might start swimming again and start getting fit. I am still trying to figure out something creative that I can do in my free time but not sure what it will be yet.

Re: Hobbies outside of SC2

Maybe look to taking up an instrument? It's what I am starting to do. It will be difficult and some times very tedious but I think if you can get into it enough it will be a great pass time. Another idea is playing sport. I recommend tennis it is a very social game and depending on where you live there should be clubs that have social players who don't care about skill level or winning/losing they are just out there for a good time.

Played trumpet and sax for 7ish years and piano since I can remember (gave all three up at the end of high school). Don't know why I played for that long as never really liked it.

Other creative things could be learning how to draw. I'd love to learn how to draw manga/anime style stuff one day but unfortunately I am terrible :P

Another nice hobby I always wished I had was photography. Swimming sounds cool too I wish I had the time to swim more regularly again.
