Getting my s**t together.

After failing a subject in uni last year, I really need to get myself together. I'm glad to have another chance at passing the subject I failed, but I really don't want it to happen again. Also, I need to start making sure my grades are the best I can get them to be so I can get in to Honours. So I made a pledge to ensure I put study above all else. That pledge horrendously failed.

I had to find a way to get a good study habit going, but also making sure I don't sacrifice too much time to just commit to study, or else I'll eventually just lose it and be too stressed to study further.

Then I saw a blog that LiquidTLO posted on Reddit:
http://www.teamliquidpro.com/news/20...ing-pro-part-i

I asked him on twitter what he used to make his schedule and joy of joys he replied to me and told me he used Google Calendar. I didn't even know about Google Calendar until today (yes, I am ridiculously slow).

I have to admit, Google Calendar's probably one of the best things that I have ever come across that can actually help me with both study and everyday life. I haven't really made a schedule myself before, and using this made it much easier for me to actually make one.

Click the image to open in full size.

It's a pretty straightforward schedule that includes all my classes for the week and also making sure I get going to uni/get home at the time mentioned so I don't get late as much as possible or waste time that I could have used productively by dawdling around uni.

I made sure to prioritize getting all the times I have decided to commit to studying first, then the fun stuff. Wherever I have Starcraft II/Free Time I do either one of the two, or spend that time with half of it playing Starcraft II and the other half on Free Time (which includes things like chores, exercise, doing errands and maybe going out). I'm pretty anti-social outside of uni or home though, so I wouldn't really be going out much; which honestly works for me.

With this schedule I aim to equally enjoy my life, making sure I do my best in uni by ensuring I give myself ample time to study hard, and get to my personal goal by the end of this year of being a M/GM player on the SEA server at least.
I'm aware that there will be times that I wouldn't be able to follow the schedule because of events or if I decide to join any tournaments/participate in clan wars and I would be forced to sacrifice a lot of my SC2/Free Time timeslots to exam study or to get major assignments done, but hopefully I will be able to follow the schedule as much as possible.

Re: Getting my s**t together.

Best way to get good grades is to be friends with people in your lectures. share notes, practice together, work togerther when you are both stuck etc.
For the course that I am doing, it's super intensive and if you miss 1 class you miss about 1/2 of the content you learn for the week (it is equivalent to 2 years uni) but instead doing it for a year.
also have a break of at least 4 hours after class. it is good for long term memory,

but i am impressed that you have a set time of 10 pm. that is very important too

Nom made some good points.

I became friends with some of the smartest guys in my year/classes and I improved greatly from hanging out and studying with them. Nothing makes me understand a concept better than having a friend explain it to me in their own way. Since they consistently get much better marks in everything than me, it has helped to motivate me to work harder and reach their level. I also learned a lot about time management from them since they have work/significant others/extra curricular activities that they must balance with uni work.

Your schedule looks great though. I've been thinking of making one myself. All the best!

No time set aside for exercise.

You should consider trying to fit in some exercise two or three times a week. It makes a huge difference.

Haha I was in the exact same boat Seffy, everyone here has made good points already. Cannot stress the need to thrown in a couple of hours of excercise per week, preferably in the mornings if you can fit it in. It's tough to get out of bed early the first few times but when you get into the habit you find yourself with so much more energy! Are you doing forensic science degree perchance?

Re: Getting my s**t together.

Yep! I have a few friends in uni that are in my classes, we make sure to get each other updated with notes and if any of us miss out we let them know what they missed out on. Some of them are in the same lab practical session as mine or tutorial so that always helps. Whenever I have a study block on that time table it's not going to be that I'll be just on notes and doing work for that time straight, I have a break every half hour to give myself some rest and then going back into it.
I've never heard of a 4 hour break after class thing, though that would make absolutely a lot of sense. Except Wednesdays and every 2nd Tuesday I should be able to have that much time before studying again.

Can't ever forget to email the lecturers though when that's needed, it's really starting to be a habit of mine to stay on top of work.

Exercise times would be in the Free Time slots. I didn't note it on there but when I have frees on weekends, Mondays and Thursdays I'll make sure to spend the first 30 mins to an hour to go out for a jog or some other exercise. Other days I still have yet to sort it out. But thanks a lot for the tip though I'll edit it to put dedicated exercise in.

I can try and squeeze in some time in the morning for it, but the problem is that I live about 45-50 mins drive from uni (and with traffic it's about an hour or so) so it'd be really hard to get some time in to exercise in the morning. Speaking of that, I managed to get some exercise just before because my idiot brother decided to wake me up at 5 am even though he could've woken me up at 6 before taking him to the airport at 7. ==

Yes Switch, I am doing Forensic Science. I'm doing the Forensic Biology stream, and Chinese is my elective.. which I might actually try and get a diploma on later down the track. Just started doing it this year because I wanted to learn something outside of sciences and I thought learning a new language would be a nice way of going about it.

Really glad that I received constructive feedback from you guys! Thanks so much.

Best of luck with getting into honours Lets hope this new schedule helps. Do you think maybe after a month or so of doing it you could do an update thing to let us know how it went?

Re: Getting my s**t together.

Thanks! Haha still got a while to go but it's best to start doing my best early than too late.

I can do an update after a month if you'd like, maybe within 2 weeks even?
