Quick, random thought about helping mech TvP
 
So I'm playing through the SC1 campaign right now cause I'm a huge hipster (or because I've been playing SCBW on iccup lately, one of those is true) and I was lucky enough to remember a spell that I'd forgotten about because well... no one ever used it.

Lockdown

During this time the unit can be attacked, repaired and destroyed, but it cannot return fire, move, or respond to any orders. Lockdown can only be cast on mechanical units (unless in Stasis).

As just a completely random thought that I haven't really heavily sat down and thought about; what if ghosts(or possibly ravens? I dunno) got Lockdown so that mech TvP was a little more viable?

It only works against mechanical units (so zergs no stress), it costs 100 energy (which could possibly go up, but definitely not down or that'd be ridiculous), and helps perhaps shut down a couple of Protoss units so that you can be a little more effective in a fight. A lot of the time when playing the game it's about making the correct choices, and in this case it would be "do I EMP the toss and just hopefully have the firepower to stop him? Or do I lockdown a unit so that they are out of the fight?".

I'm not sure how this would play out in TvT though, that's the thing that could be interesting - and to be honest it's hard to fully theorise on it because the spell was NEVER really used (apart from a few hilarious BoxeR moments) in competitive play, so the only real time you see it is during vs AI games or in the campaign and it's ******* ANNOYING.

Anyway, this could be a completely stupid idea, but interested if you guys have thoughts on this

Its an interesting idea i would like to see played out. But could it run the risk of making ghost a counter to both HT through snipe/EMP and colo through lockdown? but yeah its an idea iv seen before and would be interested to see how it would play out.

given how many protoss units are mechanical, and how useless templar and archons are without shields/energy I think it would be ridiculously OP to have one unit that can be massed and then lockdown/emp on everything...

Why was it never used in competitive BW then? Also as I said, you could probably up the cost a little so that you make a tactical decision whether to either emp or lockdown, I agree that having both would be a little silly.

you couldn't just mass ghosts cause they didn't have emp and lockdown on the one unit... idk. Thinking more I don't even know if it's worth it to use lockdown over emp. But mass ghost late game gets easier if you can lockdown the one or two colo after you mass emp evreything.

True, though there are some situations: if there are a large amount of voids and you don't have a HUGE amount of vikings to deal with them (voids smash the shit out of vikings unless you hugely outsize them or have a massive upgrade lead). Also if there is an air switch and you are somehow caught by surprise; sometimes locking down a couple of tempest might be the big difference you need. Not to mention locking down tempest in a temp v BC battle might be a better idea (again, this is very numbers dependent imo, and thus again it becomes a tactical decision)

I think if it was to cost 150 energy it might be ok. Lets imagine it in that situation; so you use 1 lockdown and then you can't EMP at all for 20 seconds or so I think? By that time a battle is over anyways.

Ghosts are already great for mech (EMP). The problem is getting them out in a timely manner though, and being able to keep them alive. The transition to ghosts when meching is one of the weak points that opens up timings against you, but if you get them out, you are in much greater shape.

This might have been a good idea in WoL, but with all the changes to mech in HoTS I don't think it really needs any more buffs.

Try voids in PvT mech, they rip apart everything and it's making me cry

Haha if P had stasis again I'd stick with P, at the moment I'm stuck between P and T - I don't want to fully T because I can only play mech and struggle a bit in TvP, and I suck at PvT when I play P... oh the irony.

i had one guy mass voids, but emp and thor splash means you can beat it... Tempests are worse, as terran.

THe one game i had where the protoss massed voids and attacked in a decent time, he didn't split them, and lost them all to about 20 mines. I"m kinda scared about players that split there voids, but then again, spliting voids makes it easier to micro vikings against them so it's a trade off. I also haven't been building ghosts much in hots yet. But I've been practicing BW-esque 2 base timings, and unfortunately at my level on hots, the protosses still think it's a good idea to run zealots into hellbats and it causes short games.

honestly i dont see lockdown being a hard counter as it's been previously stated - the units it would be useful on would have quite a long range, and by the time lategame hits where you can actually mass the unit, the protoss player should have enough map vision through observers/other shit to know whats up. it'd be more a skill vs skill thing where you just end up trying to not suicide a ghost or not getting an expensive protoss unit lockdowned to be then killed.

In combination with mech, sure. it would be stronger and possibly really cool.

in combination with bio it would counter both robo tech and templar tech and it would just be too strong. and the fact is its going to be used with bio not mech.

IF you put it on ghosts then they become an answer to colossus since even knocking them out for 3-5 seconds is worth it. This is dumb since ghosts already pro vs every unit Protoss has except colossus.

If yo put it on ravens then grats you have to start making ravens.
