A possible reason for the increase in Ping for Australians

A great bloke messaged me on Reddit today after my recent thread http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/co...f_so_what_one/

I still recommend you read the above thread as it does shed some light on whether vpns/tunneling services are actually a viable choice in regards to lowering your ping.

However, the reason provided to me by this kind redditor was that:

"In WA the internet route from WA to all of SEA including KR was cut on the 25th of janurary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SEA-ME-WE-3-Route.png and is expected to be fixed "soon" it may improve your ping to KR when it is fixed if you would like to keep updated on it check out http://www.iinet.net.au/status/fault.php?id=2295154"

Another quote after i asked if this would affect all Australians

"http://www.cablemap.info/ In this map if you look at the the line PPC-1 that comes out of NSW then bounces to Guam and moves onto the line CUCN is the only route to KR out of the east side of Australia. With the way optus/Telstra routes i believe all traffic would got to America (because it has 9 landings USA is where most data is sent) so i believe it is automatically sent to USA then to KR from my knowledge this is why when the SEA_ME_WE3 was cut it is causing increased ping to SEA and KR because the SEA_ME_WE3 is the only other line that it is possible for your data to take the shortest route to its destination."

How come some people have normal or better ping to SG or Kr but others are having significant issues. It does seem that more people are having issues with SEA tho..

Hopefully they fix this all up 'Soon TM'

Thanks Rossi... that explains why my ping to SEA is routed via adel/melb/sydney :/
As mentioned in the other thread, I get a slightly better ping to NA right now.

Always had problems to both sea and KR with Optus. Pretty frustrating, especially when playing in tournaments on SEA where I always get 400ms.

Was just show - http://blogs.computerworld.com/cyber...ecord-300-gbps

Could be related, not sure.. Perhaps more recent issues but the SEA lag has been around a bit longer I think..

Considering when Dota 2 Patches launch, they generate more than that (about 2% of internet traffic), it shouldn't make a dent

i was always under the impression Optus lines always directed through the US first, thats why optus users have trouble with SEA / KR, but it seems to explain why other ISP's have gone to a bad connection to sea as well!

Actually I've always had better ping to KR than to SEA because it's only SEA that seems to go through the US.... I believe Optus have access to the lines that go directly to East Asia, but not to the SEA ones.

And I'll leave that there, but I just ran a tracert to kr.battle.net to confirm this, and apparently I have 400+ ping there, the cause being that it is indeed being routed through the same channels as optus singapore traffic. (evidenced by the singtel servers, it seems). gg optus, this did not used to be the case and i got a reasonable (when your best ping to any server is 220-250) < 300 ping to KR.

There does appear to be some changes in routing from at least Optus... can't speak for any other isps though.
