Solution to mic volume changing at loading screen

Hi all,

This problem recently came up while streaming the weekly BSG tournament. It really frustrated me and I spent a fair bit of time trying to figure it out, so I figured I’d post the solution here for other people who might have the same issue in the future.

This is not actually an Xsplit problem, it’s a game/windows problem. Your stream viewers are just the victims.

Description of the problem:
You are streaming your ladder or casting a tournament, and when you load into a game, your chat window blows up – “Argh too loud!!!!!111one”.

You fiddle with your Xsplit settings and it goes back to normal. The very next time you load into a game, it happens again. What do you do?

The problem itself:
SC2.exe is controlling your microphone volume. When at loading screen, it will automatically adjust your microphone to whatever the hell it wants. I’ve made a quick video which demonstrates the problem. You should test it yourself the same way – open your volume control for the device and watch it while you load up a replay.

The solution:
Open your in-game options and go to the Voice tab. Here’s the settings your game uses to interact with the mic.

Change the Settings in the Talking section (you’ll need to Enable Talking first if it’s not already):

Click the image to open in full size.
  • Select the correct Input Device (default device will be picked by default).
  • Adjust the microphone volume to whatever you want your mic set at.
  • Uncheck everything (unless you actually use the Voice Chat).

Note: Just because all these settings aren’t enabled doesn’t necessarily mean your microphone settings won’t be changed – do be sure to adjust the slider and then disable.

For some people, you may have your microphone set at 100% by default, in which case you probably won’t notice anything. I still recommend you test it out by lowering your volume and monitoring it during load screen, so you're aware if you change mics/need to adjust it for whatever reason.

+ [Still not fixed?] +

It didn’t make any difference for me, but you might like to try changing the application exclusive mode settings under the Advanced Tab of your mic properties like below

If you have this problem and the post hasn't helped, post below and I'll see if I can suggest anything else

Dude I can't thank you enough for this I've been blasting people's ears every time I have casted an SC2 game and it starts up.

I've been looking forever into how to fix this issue, and nearly even bought a new headset. Now I don't need to, you are the man All I can do to thank you is rep but rest assured next cast you're getting a shout out for fixing this problem I've had for weeks!

Nice, I figured this out a couple of weeks ago but didn't think to post it. It's still frustrating though that if you want to alter your mic settings you then have to mirror those settings in sc2 each time.

Yeah like any anally retentive nerd I'm not happy with this as a permanent fix. This is how to make your stream watchable, but I'm sure there's a way to stop sc2.exe interacting with your sound devices at all.

My mic is connected by a USB preamp, so it might be a USB audio thing, could potentially be resolved with a sound card and appropriate software

Glad it has helped

This reminds me of another annoyance that was popping up on my machine - my game volume kept dropping right down whenever I tried to run Skype at the same time. After trawling through the Skype settings and finding nothing I eventually found that the culprit was under Sound in the Control Panel:

Nice Rythos, thanks. I'll just add to that if skype is going funky while streaming, there are also auto adjust settings in Skype that you might want to adjust.

Click the image to open in full size.

I'll edit these into the OP as other potential fixes
