As a matter of policy when going up against a protoss opponent I will build a few spores and and spines next to my new hatcheries as the macro match continues. At my league, when I force my toss opponent into a corner, he will often pull a quick tech switch to dark templars and try to sneak into my base for a quick win.
Most of the time I am prepared, but in this last game I had a toss that could multitask a warp prism dropping DTs next to my hatcheries while adding cloaked units to his main army composition of blink stalkers.
I could not keep my detection alive long enough to get rid of the DT's in his army, while I was scrambling to build defenses to my bases from annoying cloaked units. He kept targeting down all the Overseers I created so his DTs were shredding my lings, ultras, and infestors. Anyone have any ideas on how to cope with this kind of thing?
Warp Prism DTs are the most annoying thing, but just handle them as you said you normally do, maybe add an additional spore (2 instead of 1) as sometimes a large warpin can target fire down your Spore.
As for what you said, you need more Overseers then! It's not uncommon to morph 3-4 Overseers to go with your army if you're worried about that, they're cheap anyway. And try to keep them at the back of your army, detection has a pretty large AoE so you'll still be able to see the DTs.
Also, Fungal Growth catches DTs and make them visible so if you said you had Infestors you should be able to use that as well!
There could be an underlying macro problem as well, if you had any replays of you struggling with this it would be good to post it.
If my opponent goes dts i tend to leave overseers and spines at each base and 10 overseers with my army. Some on the same control group as army some just following random units. They cost so little and stalker dt is so bad in a straight fight its pretty easy to deal with if you are overprepared to begin with.
Thank you for the replies. I think I really need to be more flexible in my mind about what makes a viable unit composition. Though I am unused to making 10 overseers to escort my army, it makes perfect sense. Also, yes, fungal growth could be instrumental as long as the DTs don't get a chance to come over and pop my festors like they were party balloons.
I really have no excuse for losing to this sort of nonsense.
this saves me asking this question! i can't believe how much has changed in the little break i had off! i am half way back to where i should be, and this advice may help me get back if i put it to good use!
