Roster Recap [sc2sea] News Team Meeting #3

News Team Meeting #3.

Click the image to open in full size.

1. Introduction (11/01/2013).
So this time I've decided to try something new. Rather than have a meeting on skype where we all may not be able to attend I've decided to try it as a thread. It may take a week or so to complete but I won't have to keep the minutes and no one will miss a thing.

I will be the speaker and change the topic as I see fit. So the first point of order today is the meeting plan:

Meeting Plan:
  1. Introduction.
  2. Is there anything to add to the meeting plan?
  3. Review of the 2012 July - December.
  4. Ideas to push content when there's nothing better to talk about.
  5. Review of roles for 2013.
  6. FAQ, discussion and conclusion.
For now the meeting plan is not very large but I am now opening up a 48 hour period where people may add extra things they wish to talk about. After 48 hours the meeting will properly begin. I will use blocks of 24 hours to progress the meeting until it concludes... sort of like how the mafia game progresses.

2. Meeting Plan (11/01/2013).
Ok, since there was nothing extra to add to the team meeting I will now go ahead and move onto point 3.
3. Review of the 2012 July - December (14/01/2012).
Click the image to open in full size.

Above are the statistics of July - December 2012. I don't think anyone will dispute that Dingobloo has put in the most effort since joining the team in August writing a total of 34% of our articles. I've already thanked you personally for this but I will now do so publicly... thanks.

@switch: I am interested to know about the drop off in article production in November and December because up until then it was looking very much like you would meet the minimum.

@ZizLah: Ideally it's 2 articles per month to stay meeting the minimum. I understand you're new to the team but if you have any concerns/difficulties with this let me know, otherwise I look forward to what you'll achieve this year .

Everyone else met the minimum so thanks. You may have noticed that anyone who let me know when they could not produce articles did not have those months affect their end result. Best example is MezjE who has taken indefinite leave but only produced 5 articles... yet he is still meeting the minimum because atm I am not expecting him to produce anything.

I have mentioned in the past that ideally I would like it if people could produce 4 articles a month and that 2 was a minimum amount. Food for thought... if we all meet the minimum every month for 1 year (8 people * 2 articles per month * 12 months) we produce 192 articles. If we all meet my ideal then we produce 384 (twice the minimum) which is just over 1 article per day... I like the prospect or producing just over 1 article per day. Our current rate does not achieve this.

There are a number of ways I can increase our numbers.

1. Get more volunteers: Antelopes has produced a number of articles of late however he is also rather young which could mean that he's not willing to take on this responsibility. FracTaL is new to this site but is very... excitable and also would like to raise their profile and perhaps even become a mod... now I can't guarantee that but I can offer a role where they will become more recognised on the site aside from chat box. Other suggestions are welcome for this... these are just who I've noticed/think stand out.

2. Encourage the current team to produce more... but the question is how? There are many forms of motivation and I would be interested to know what motivates each member of the team. As an example... my motivation is my public appearance. I like to be seen as a respectable and trustworthy member of the community so I try my best to ensure that this is what happens.

The next topic will cover some ideas to push content when news seems scarce... and after that we will review the roles for 2013. Both of these things could increase our productivity but we will focus on those ideas in their own section. For now has anyone got anything to contribute to this conversation thus far? I would like your thoughts on all of this.

My concern is about what would be getting posted. At the moment, it seems we're almost encouraged to find things to write about in order to keep churning out articles, even when some of them may not be "newsworthy". I am personally motivated by the feeling that I am able to demonstrate quality work. I hope to produce articles that will catch peoples' eye and spark discussion.

I'll use Antelopes' 2 most recent posts for an example, since he's not on the news team, and they were both Blizzard announcement copy-pastes. If we want to post every update Blizzard publishes, we can automate it. I can do that, and paperclip or veteris can turn it into a widget. Or they could probably just do the whole thing even faster than I can. I don't see the value in just blindly copy-pasting every article for the sake of it. I think the community demonstrates that they do not need such posts by not engaging with them - 2 & 3 posts respectively, and a fraction of the views when compared to other news posts. Of course, patches are a different story - even small changes can have big impacts and I think these are pretty popular articles readership-wise.

I'll throw in my ProLeague posts as an example of what I'm talking about - I am really excited by ProLeague, and figured a lot of others out there will be too. My first post got some attention and I continually updated it to include results (usually live). For week 2, however, I noticed that people simply weren't being engaged. So, I took that to mean that people aren't interested, and put a stop to a series of posts that if I continued, would net me 4 articles a month alone. The reason being, I don't think it was needed and posting without actually contributing anything is what I consider spam.

My suggestion would be that we look back over the "hot" news topics of the past 6 months, to see what people are interested in, and we focus news efforts on catering to these. We can just take broad ideas. I expect that the most popular articles are those that involve SEA players abroad, major SEA tournaments, some major international tournaments, balance patches, and the occasional team announcement/player transfer. On that note, I realise we've all missed the story about Parting to KeSPA, so excuse me while I write my first article for January.

This reminds me of the movie Office Space! If you want people writing 4 articles per month, why not make the minimum 4 articles per month?

Some really good stuff in that post ty
(btw... breadfan is setting a great example... challenge me! I like to think I'm right a lot ALL the time... but I know that's not true and challenging my opinion only helps make this team better... which is what I want.)

TL:DR of breadfans post:
  1. We're encouraged to find things to write about rather than stuff which is newsworthy because of the "minimum" requirement.
  2. Posting updates by blizzard and similar news streams is redundant however if we do wish to continue doing this... why not automate the process?
  3. Aim to post about big news rather than just all news
  4. Suggestion: Look back at what was popular over the past 6 months and aim to post what's popular.
  5. Suggestion: If I'm wanting more articles per month... why not change the minimum?

1. Duly noted - I can understand why being forced to meet a minimum number of articles could be concerning about article quality. It's sometimes difficult to know how to measure peoples work. i.e. quality over quantity. For the first 6 months it's been easy just to keep track of how much people post and based on that I can measure how much work each of you has been doing even if some have genuinely been working harder than others. How would you go about measuring how hard our group works? should I find a new system or just use my own judgement... I'll still keep collecting stats cause they're a useful thing to have regardless.

2. Automating the process sounds like a great idea and certainly is something that a number of people would be capable of putting together. It could be added to the front page like so too:

Click the image to open in full size.
Image: Current layout (left); proposed layout (right).

Until the bot is functional... we can just keep doing what we're doing currently perhaps? I will elaborate more in point 3 right now.

3. The reason why we're aiming to post all news in addition to just newsworthy news is so that SC2SEA becomes a major news hub. Somewhere where people go to get all their news rather than just SEA related news. With enough of an eye out we can make it so that even people who aren't in the SEA region come here for news because we have all the news which brings attention to the SEA scene which will in turn develop this region making it bigger and better and bringing new opportunities to the players in this region.

4. Excellent idea... I will do this.

5. Nice suggestion but I also don't want to push you guys too hard either. We've already mentioned that the "minimums" system is imperfect and that there may be a better way of measuring contributions to the news team. For now I am thinking I'll keep it the same but I do welcome alternative measurement systems.

1. I think a mix is good. I think judgment calls are fine. I agree that stats are always useful, "too much information" doesn't exist. And you could always approach people directly if you are concerned. Even if you ask them to rate their own effort for a certain time frame, and you consider that, and this can be done as formally or informally as you like. Numbers are easy to fall back on since they are just there for all to see, but if I honestly rate myself, there are months where I've done a few posts and I've been happy with my efforts put in to writing those posts, and other months where I've posted the same number of threads or maybe more, but honestly felt like I could have made a bigger effort.

2. You could really just use an RSS feed. Blizzard have done most of the work, all we need is to parse it into a widget http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/feed/news

3. I can appreciate that goal. I guess my issue then is more that there's no distinction between the types of news. I'll use TL as an example - you have Community News & Headlines - only major news appears there such as team and player information, league announcements, patch updates, etc. And not every bit of news cuts it for this list - Snute joining Liquid wasn't deemed worthy (I think that's an oversight but the point remains!).

Then, you have the subsections - TL News Articles has things like recaps of events, player profiles, etc. Spotlight has community contributions, and results has results! Maybe I'm suggesting a more radical overhaul of the layout, but I think if the "News Hub" is truly the goal, such a step is probably necessary. I don't think we can be that hub if all our news is lumped in together.

EDIT: I made a post with a bit of an example here, so as not to clutter the meeting thread

5. Tying in with 1 - I don't think you need to necessarily increase minimums if you add your own judgment to the mix. If it helps, you could consider that first 6 months to have been the trial period where the concern was whether or not members could exceed the minimum - we're left with people who've demonstrated they can, so maybe the approach going forward could be maintaining smoothness/improving what we can, with less focus on numbers (but again, something to keep an eye on in the context of a bigger picture).

I've never been a fan of the copy paste new's story's, and it seems like all we've been doing the last few months, especially considering we lag behind because of our timezone.

All of your stuff has been taken on board and I don't have anything to add to that for now.

I like the effort you've gone into here and I'll post up some more information after I've come home from dodgeball. I think the news stream bot was a fantastic idea and I'd like to get that implemented.

The news hub was also a fantastic idea and worth considering. I'm thinking if we get things done one at a time in an object oriented way then it shouldn't be too hard to implement the features one bit at a time with the layout changing towards the end and completing the idea.

BRB.

There are a bunch of challenges to actually providing timely and useful coverage of non-sea news; we'll rarely be able to cover it anywhere near as fast as Reddit or TL community news which does diminish it's value, then as Breadfan has addressed unless you rearrange the front page it very easily pushes useful SEA news off the front page, then there is the feedback that does come up whenever we do post stuff of that nature which is basically "I don't need another TL/Reddit".

On top of that, as our news team is largely volunteers and usually have other responsibilities within the community I don't think the challenge is suggesting more commodity content for them to write but instead getting them excited about writing something they care about. Additionally, for me in the second half of last year, it wasn't about finding stuff to write about, there was usually plenty, it was knowing which stuff just wasn't particularly useful so i could focus on stuff that was at least a bit more valuable even if you are already reading other sites.

Usually my thought process and priority was:

- Large SEA events and tournament info were usually high priority for a decent write-up
- Any other SEA Player/Transfer news though the managers of the teams often want to cover it themselves.
- Blizzard stuff, because it generally is applicable to almost everyone that frequents the site and there's value to be added by SEA server specific info or time zone conversion.
- Premier tournaments starting, again there's value to be added by having SEA timezone conversion and making sure people know what there is to watch on a given weekend with information in one place.
- Big Ass News, anything that's a milestone moment for SC2 like EG/TL in proleague, Jaedong etc there is not as much we can add to this but its' generally good to have it.
- Tournaments finishing and result write ups, usually less prioritized but nice to have so people know when an previously mentioned event is finished even if there isn't much more to add except putting all the vods/results in one place for people to catch up if they missed it.
- Recurring world tournament news, while it's nice it's also a large commitment because if you have incomplete coverage it looks even worse then no coverage at all.
- World player trades and other team related news I generally give a pretty low priority, there are usually plenty of places to read about them there's not much value for us to add and importantly it applies to the fewest amount of people that follow the site compared to actual game/spectator information unless you were a fan of the player this only affects the player and the team.
- Extraneous Fluff (Destiny's Wang, Pitchfork wielding mobs) usually for me I don't consider it. There's better stuff I could be focusing on in 99% of cases, it barely affects most peoples enjoyment of the game and there is nothing I can add.

If I wanted to push the coverage in a direction I'd definitely want better coverage of some of the SEA online events to build stories in preparation for the offline events, especially the stuff like the upcoming wT major where it's not every week and holds more weight, gives the players something to play for. More interviews bitches love interviews and part of the benefits of a smaller scene is accessibility of the players (it also helps the players sponsors). Just more reasons to do original content.

Just my 2c.

4. Ideas to push content when there's nothing better to talk about (17/01/2012).
This topic is more going to be about pushing original content but if we can come up with some original content to post during times when there's not much news to tell we can keep up the appearance of being active when we're not.

The sort of articles I'm talking about that we already do include:
  • The SC2SEA Wrap-Up
  • Roster Review
...and that's about it.

So I have a couple questions.
  1. Are there any other types of articles you guys would like to see written?
  2. Is there anyone who wants to try their hand at some of the original content we're already working on?
With respect to point 1, upcoming sea events/things to look out for, upcoming players/player summaries (though they are often done by team managers/the writing team), etc... Feel free to come up with your own suggestions... That's mainly what I'm after in this section.

With respect to point 2, I ask this generally but what I'm implying is that if anyone wants to try their hand at the sc2sea wrap up I would welcome it. I'm not saying that I cannot or will not do it however I would not mind a break for one month of it (haha) and I'm also keen to know who else is capable of producing this sort of massive article. It's an excellent way to demonstrate your ability to me rather than just through minor articles (and I would be there to help guide you... it wouldn't be a proper break ).

Thoughts?

Some suggestions, just brainstorming.
  • Editorials - they would be well-researched "super articles" - discussing broader or less explicit events and situations, and have room for opinion. E.g. Startale exodus, Is ESF bleeding players, etc... Basically, these could share a subject with some popular reddit drama threads, but they AREN'T reddit drama threads - the difference being, instead of shouting and screaming and making claims about the death and/or killing of esports, you could give a balanced and non-exaggerated look over some of these drama issues. These could be the sort of article that you actually want to include some quotes from a source for, so you might try to talk to the people involved. I think there are a lot of cool potential articles out there that could be. These are the articles that don't need to consume all your time, but are likely planned and written over several days rather than in a single sitting.
  • Up & Coming player spotlight. Obviously this isn't a new idea, but I have thoughts to share. First of all, I suggest opening it up to non-SEA players. The only thing I would suggest is that here, we actually take this away from the whole "player X joining this team hype hype hype" thread. Kind of like the article about Pox (which I think was before AVANT ToR). We aren't advertising teams, but we are giving the individuals some exposure. So if some non-hacker is sitting on top of the SEA ladder that people don't really know, we could talk about that. Maybe some guy from an obscure European team goes to Homestory Cup and beats a ton of high profile players on his way to a 3rd place finish - let's talk about that.

I think that team owners and managers and others will always opt to post their own releases for things - reason being, they control the content entirely. They can include and omit what they want, as they please. There is value there for them. If you want the news team to control the content, the solution would be to not promote such stories to the news feed, and to let the news team provide value instead (bearing in mind you are taking away control, so you would want to ensure you are giving them back things like more views, etc - actually adding value).

Taking the most recent post as an example, Dox might post about IEM Poland on the tournaments forum, and one of us might write the article about it before it appears as news. This might mean that in future Dox comes to the news team 24 hours ahead of time with a draft, because he wants to make sure his thread gets max exposure, and the article can be pre-written and waiting on the announcement before going live. Of course, this is only IF this is seen as a goal - I don't think that a big enough advantage for news team control is there yet, or if that will even be an eventual goal, and there are many obstacles in the way to make this difficult until it is.

I think that categorising news posts as previously discussed will shape what can happen on that front. I think the question will inevitably be, when is an article news, and when is it advertising, and to what extent do we allow free advertising in this form?

I have noted everything you have said breadfan, ty

I think another type of article we forgot to mention is Interviews however I guess they sort of come under up-and-coming players or the writing team. Nevertheless for the sake of putting everything out there I just thought I'd mention it

Quick Comments
 breadfan:
I'd love to see us doing more interview material

5. Review of roles for 2013 (19/01/2012).
Current roles are as follows:

News Team "Dead Poets Society" Commitments Specialty Responded?
breadfan No
dingobloo Yes
MezjE (on break) Roster Review (Fortnightly*) N/A
Mox Roster Review (Fortnightly*) Yes
Rogue NZ News Yes
Switch No
TheGentleman (c) SC2SEA Wrap up (Monthly) Organisation of News Team Yes
ZizLah Yes
* The Roster Review is a fortnightly report. Either MezjE or Mox may do it just as long as it gets done. Teamwork yay!!

The reason I am reviewing the news team roles is simply to ensure that everyone is happy with their roles as of this team meeting. For this I would appreciate it if EVERYONE could voice an opinion.

Your response should look like this:

Are you happy with your role: Yes/No
(if No) Why not (and what would you like to be done about it)? Your response...
Are there any other responsibilities you would like to take on? Yes/No
(if Yes) What are they? What are they?

Anything else you want to say...

kgo!

Are you happy with your role: Yes
(if No) Why not (and what would you like to be done about it)? See Above..
Are there any other responsibilities you would like to take on? Yes but likely not on a weekly basis.
(if Yes) What are they? What are they? As I outlined in my previous post I'll likely try improve the coverage of some of the larger SEA online events.

Sorry for not really contributing to this thread so far, been kinda busy with RL stuff, organising uni etc. Anywho....

Are you happy with your role: Yes
(if No) Why not (and what would you like to be done about it)? Your response... N/A
Are there any other responsibilities you would like to take on? Yes.
(if Yes) What are they? What are they? What ever the news team needs me to do really. I try to help out with the growth of the scene in any way I can, and as such I'm flexible as to what is needed of me. I'm happy to do anything extra we feel is necessary really.

Anything else you want to say..
I would probably prefer to do more weekly/biweekly/periodical stuff for the team, as I feel like it would be a much better way for me to help out. Between work and uni, I rarely get online before news has already broken and then been reported, so sometimes I feel like I am unable to really contribute frequently. That is why I enjoy doing the roster review, as its fortnightly so I have time to work on it when I have free time and I can deliver it on time. So if there are any other periodic news items you would like to be introduced I would be happy to work on them.

(if No) Why not (and what would you like to be done about it)? Your response... wel i'd like if we did more indepth news if possible, expand on what we post, rather then just copy paste other peoples work and add tags and icons...
Are there any other responsibilities you would like to take on? Yes/NoYes
(if Yes) What are they? What are they?
It's my goal to go to all the ACL events in australia this year and do interviews with the players and organisers.

I suppose I should answer for myself as well...

Are you happy with your role: Yes.
(if No) Why not (and what would you like to be done about it)? N/A.
Are there any other responsibilities you would like to take on? No... leading the news team and the SC2SEA wrap up is more than enough for one person.
(if Yes) What are they? N/A.

Sorry for slack reply,

Are you happy with your role: Yes, although I didn't realise that I had lost my previous specific role
(if No) Why not (and what would you like to be done about it)? Your response...
Are there any other responsibilities you would like to take on? Yes, although like Dingo, I don't know about setting myself a weekly schedule or anything.
(if Yes) What are they? What are they? Maybe more scene specific stuff, like interviews with players, teams, managers, maybe some opinion/editorial pieces if they have a place, and maybe a bit more hands on in other scenes. I'd like to just try a few things out I guess

Also ZizLah, maybe I could give you a hand with ACL interviews? Like you do the interviews, I'll set up a camera and a mic and record them? We can bounce ideas around too

OK well everything has been discussed. Sorry for not getting back here sooner to progress the meeting further.

6. FAQ, discussion and conclusion.
News team statistics were discussed:
TheGentleman: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137254&postcount=2
  • Concerns about minimum expected articles not being met.
  • Suggestions to increase article numbers including:
    • Additional regular articles (like the Roster Review).
    • Increasing motivation.
  • A realistic goal of 384 articles was suggested.
Breadfan: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137265&postcount=3
  • Concerns about quality of posts versus quantity. Would rather see newsworthy articles being posted than the minimum being met.
  • Automate the news process where possible (i.e. Blizzard news feed).
  • Review "hot" topics over the past 6 months to work out what the people of SC2SEA like. Try and post more of these kinds of articles.
  • Suggestion to change the minimum to X if I want X articles per month rather than setting the expected to X.
TheGentleman: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137273&postcount=4
  • Agreed with breadfan's concern about quality versus quantity. Raised concern about how to measure the work submitted by the news team.
  • Agreed with breadfan's the automation idea. Provided graphical suggestion for new SC2SEA news section layout. Create an SC2SEA NewsBot.
  • Provided insight about why we're aiming to post all news rather than just some news. Goal: To become a major news hub and for that to be achieved we need to make SC2SEA a one stop news shop (figuratively speaking).
  • Agreed with breadfan's suggestion to review the past 6 months of news.
  • Disagreed with changing the minimum expected posts because the system is imperfect. Welcomed additional suggestions for other measurement systems.
Breadfan: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137277&postcount=5
  • No such thing as too much information. Agrees to keep the minimum's system and suggests that I (TheGentleman) should just make subjective calls if I'm concerned.
  • RSS Feed suggestion regarding news feed automation.
  • News hub suggestion... full article here: http://www.sc2sea.com/showthread.php?t=6823
Zizlah: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137278&postcount=6
  • Mentions that he doesn't like the copy-paste mentality that has been established by the news team.
TheGentleman: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137357&postcount=7
  • Agrees with the news hub idea.
Dingobloo: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137379&postcount=8
  • Until breadfan's news hub idea comes to fruition the current news feed pushes useful SEA news off the front of the site. This is a problem.
  • Get news team volunteers to write about stuff that keeps them interested rather than turning it into a job.
  • Provided a nice list of priorities to follow when determining what good things to post about.
  • Would like to push SEA news in the direction of quality rather than quantity if possible.
nirvAnA: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p=137406&postcount=9
  • Suggested a news ticker rather than a news hub. Similar to that of http://mmo-champion.com/content
  • No one uses the submit news feature other than antelope (true story).
We came up with some ideas to push content when there's nothing better to talk about.
TheGentleman: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...2&postcount=10
  • Provides suggestions for new content:
    • Upcoming Sea Events/Players
    • Look out for...
    • Player summaries...
    • etc... (though most of the above listed are already covered by the writing team).
  • Asks if there are any other types of articles the news team would like to see written.
  • Asks if anyone else out there wants to try their hand at the SC2SEA Wrap Up.
Breadfan: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...1&postcount=11
  • Adding to the ideas for additional content:
    • Editorials
    • Up & Coming player spotlight.
  • Reminds us that some members of the site such as team/clan leaders may prefer to provide announcements of their own news.
    • On that note however also suggests that these people come to the news team in advance so we can ensure that the "thead gets maximum exposure".
TheGentleman: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...4&postcount=12
  • Adds to the list of suggestions: Interviews.
We review the roles for 2013:
  • Breadfan: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...1&postcount=20
  • dingobloo: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...5&postcount=14
  • MezjE: No Reply.
  • Mox: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...0&postcount=15
  • Rogue: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...7&postcount=16
  • Switch: No Reply.
  • TheGentleman: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...3&postcount=18
  • ZizLah: http://www.sc2sea.com/showpost.php?p...1&postcount=17

Are there any other things people would like to discuss, questions to ask, etc... before I end this meeting.

Also feel free to let me know what you thought of having the meeting in this way rather than through Skype .

Kind Regards,
