Long ago, the mighty warriors of Terror Australis came up with an idea. This idea would become a legend in TA folkore... this of course was the Retro Rumble.
One sunny Friday, I, MC Babyface, returned home from a long day of study to my comfortable nerd chair. Joining TeamSpeak as I often did on a Friday afternoon for some end of week laughs I was confonted with a question that would forever change the face of TA. 'Wanna play donkey kong country and drink?'. Yes.
Chiseled warrior Jonathon 'Pindaddy' Pinder, strange bedfellow Maxwell 'KrUnch' O'Callaghan and the vivacious and awesome Timmy 'Cosmic' Roots proposed that I, Cameron 'EdgE' Murrin join them for a 4-way drink-a-thon where we celebrate games of old in the traditional Aussie way.
After 2 successful Retro Rumbles where the men embarked on the lands of Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World, the 4 warriors went there own seperate way... until now. The 4 gladiators will re-unite for hopefully not the last time to bring some quality skills to games of yesteryear, ft. booze.
TL: DR: Cosmic, Krunch, Edge and Pinder play a vintage video game (Megaman X) with alcohol
Yes folks it has returned! Join us on Saturday the 22nd at 8:00 AEST to watch what is truly an embarrassing but worthwhile journey through the MegaMan X world. There may or may not be a stream at this point but 70% chance there will be, at least with 3 of us. Here are the previous threads related to the Retro Rumble™: (Write ups on the respective last pages)
As one of the most popular people in the SEA scene sporting an often controversial personality, Pinder is still a pleasure to have around and it's great to feel his presence again. After quitting StarCraft 2 to focus on his studies, Pinder seldom posted on StarCraft websites and has only just come back to visit for a while. Pinder performed strongly in both the Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World rumbles, but came up 2nd in both. In the latter, Pinder was leading for the majority of the race but that ended up being his downfall as inebriation lead to 1 critical mistake that gave old mate KrUnch the victory.
Eager to prove that he is the real deal, Pinder is gunning to take 1st place in the upcoming MegaMan challenge and has all the tools necessary to do so.
Weapon of Choice: Apple Strongbow
Strengths:
Jawline of the Gods
Quick Thinker
Determined to get his first victory
Strong platform skill
Weaknesses:
Historically slow finisher
Pressure gets to him at the worst of times
Not an expert at handling alcohol
Not as much of a gamer nerd anymore (or is he?)
Odds: 5-1
Timothy 'Cosmic' Roots
'**** i was winning as well, what a whore!'
A lesser known figure in the SEA scene but a figure nonetheless, Cosmic is a force to be reckoned with. With talent for most games he touches, 'Roots' as he is affectionately called will be out to show the world that the first Retro Rumble was not a fluke and that he can become the champion he deserves to be. Cosmic boasts a very care-free personality, and is quite the ladies man. However in the last Retro Rumble, being a ladies man ended up becoming his downfall.
Roots is going to put the disappointing result of the last RR behind him and use his vast skillset to his advantage.
Weapon of Choice: Goon (maybe changed)
Strengths
Strong handler of Alcohol
Experienced platform gamer
Doesn't make many mistakes
Not afraid to fight dirty
Photo doesn't look smug anymore
Weaknesses
Said to be a poor starter
Easily put on tilt
Prone to drinking strong alcohol
The women are after him
Odds: 4-1
Cameron 'EdgE' Murrin 'Nah i'll be fine with goon'
A consistent figure in the SEA scene for a long time now, Cam 'EdgE' Murrin is out to show not that he is the best, but that he isn't god-awful. After disappointing performances in both RR's, Cam has been left feeling quite bitter. Knowing full well that he would have 2 4th places if it wasn't for Cosmic's sudden departure in RR#2, Cam is looking to calm his head and focus instead of getting characteristically anxious in the important moments.
If Cam get's a result better than 4th fairly, that's a win in of it self... but the sneaky Zerg that he is will want to shake the very foundation of Retro Rumble history and claim top spot to forever cement his name.
Weapon of Choice: Heineken
Strengths
Very determined to prove himself
More platform experience under his belt than before
Mentality has improved in the year break
Handles alcohol better, but not Cosmic level
Weaknesses
Easily put off his game
Not a slow starter, but a slow everything
Hard time controlling own expectations
Will have to fight off adult urges
Thinks jumping off the cliff is still the idea of Platform Games
Odds: 15-1
Max 'KrUnch' O'Callaghan I ain't no shmuck m8
The fun-loving and level-headed Max rounds up the competitors for the Retro Rumble. A former GM Zerg/Master protoss and all-around good guy, the sometimes seedy Max is looking to continue his domination of the Retro Rumbles. With an emphatic first place in both Retro Rumbles, he is the most accomplished of the 4 competitors and he damn well knows it.
Somewhat unfamiliar with MegaMan as all competitors are, Max will thrive on the even playing field knowing the pressure isn't on to perform like previous rumbles.
Weapon of Choice: Stella Artois
Strengths
Very consistent racer
Less pressure to perform than the other 3 racers
House free to yell at his hearts content
Adapts to new games well
Weaknesses
Possibly too cocky for his own good
'Still sucks at every game' - Pinder
No Nydus worms in MegaMan
Momentum gone from the prior Retro Rumbles
Odds: 4-1
This is looking to be the closest Retro Rumble yet, with no-one having experience with this game, most competitors being rusty to platforms and EdgE showing improvement this could be anyone's game.
THE RULES AND INFORMATION OF RR#3 - MegaMan X
The Rules:
The race will last (tentative) 4 hours from the start time, at this point if no player has completed Super Mario World, placings will be based on how far we have progressed through the game
All players must be in Team Speak for the duration of the Race
Use of the 'save state' function, or any emulator function that you would not be able to do in a snes is considered cheating (this includes use of the tilde (~) key
No practice is allowed prior to the start of the race
(possibly more abuses to be added)
The IMPORTANT Rules:
*Drink = Strong sip
Whenever a player dies, drink 1
When a player gets an Armor Upgrade, drink 1
Whenever a player finds a Pink Health Capsule, drink 2
When a player defeats a boss, he drinks 2 and the rest drink 1
Ask Jeeves (Maynarde or Flamga) for a tip, drink 2
If you finish the game, finish your drink
Follow a Player:
The idea of the Retro Rumble is for the 4 competitors to battle it out under awkward circumstances (foreign vintage game and inebriation), but you the viewers can play a long too! At the very least there will be 1 or 2 streams, and as you familiarize with the voices of the players you can drink a long with 1 of them. Pick wisely, as the wrong choice could turn your night of fun into a hangover you didn't expect (so don't pick me).
The Game:
Since we abruptly decided to start this up again, we weren't even sure what game it was but ChadMann found an old picture he made that reminded us of the specific game we are playing - Megaman X. From wikipedia, we get this rave review of the game:
Mega Man X has been widely acclaimed by critics since its release. Gaming magazines in the United States and Europe including Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), GamePro, Game Players, Nintendo Power, Super Play, and the German version of Total! consistently lauded the game's visuals, audio, control, and overall gameplay.[5][20][24][30][42][43][44] Game Players summarized Mega Man X as "a near-perfect cart with classic gameplay, excellent graphics and sound and tons of hidden items and power-ups".
RR#4?
If you like the concept and the fun of these events, tell us if you'd like to see another and also what games you'd like to see. We'd prefer a game that all 4 of us are foreign too, or at least were never good at and played when we were 5 or something.
Enjoy! - Cam
P.S Special thanks to Maynarde for his expert help on Megaman X! Flamga and Maynarde are to be the expert tip givers.
We've had a few hiccups but it looks to be going ahead for tonight! We may need a 4th party to join the main stream as an emergency but it's looking good for now.
Will post the links to download emulator + rom that we are using when it's about to start. We aren't practicing until we actually begin the Retro Rumble, so we want anyone who wants to have fun trying the game we are giving our all too to have the same restrictions as us!
It seems two-time defending champion KrUnch has pulled out at the last minute and as Pinder put it 'like a newb'. We have a suitable replacement who has a sleeping schedule worse than mine which adds to the stress but this will go ahead no matter what!
A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES!!!!
Ash 'Champi' Stanton Sorry wasn't asleep, was busy talking to Ret on skype
A surprise entrant in the Retro Rumble but a fitting one nonetheless, Champi is a dedicated SC2 player who represents new team Carnage eSports quite well. He has indulged in other games quite often, but his platform experience or at least skill doesn't seem to be overwhelming. Champi will be looking to get wasted and see if he can outdo the 3 Retro Rumble veterans at their own game.
Little is known about Champi's Megaman experience, but experts estimate that it ranges from none to zero. Let's see what he has in store for us!
Weapon of Choice: Green Apple Smirnoff
Strengths:
Experienced with Alcohol, although not Cosmic level handling
Confucius like calm when gaming under the influence
Surprise factor is on his side
Has a beard
Weaknesses
Often resorts to 'having a good time' instead of winning
So when all was said and done, Megaman X turned out to be the best game so far for the retro rumble series. A steep broodwar-esque learning curve would've made the game near impossible while intoxicated if we didn't have Flamga guiding us through which levels to choose and strategies for bosses, but thanks to him most players were able to progress well through 50% of the game in the 4 hour time limit, and it was a hell of a lot of fun.
1st place: Pinder and Cosmic (Tied)
While both players were neck and neck in the first 30 minutes, cosmic soon pulled out to a huge lead, extending it to as much as 3 stages ahead around the 2hr:30min mark through the race with superb boss fighting, beating quite a few stage bosses on his first try and wise use of the "Ask flamga" option. However in the last hour and a half Pinder managed to come home strong, and both players were up to stage 9 (the first part of the "final stage"), where they were both up to the same point of the game when the clock timed out. As with all retro rumbles, the game isnt over until your last game over, so both players had the chance to progress as far as they could in that life, however neither player in their inebriated state could think fast enough to out-wit this stupid spider thing that literally showed you which path it was going to take, and tied for 1st at the hands of stupid spider boss thing.
3rd place: Champi
The 'fill-in' for this retro rumble, Champi was quite the character. You could hear his shock 1 hour in when he only just realized his weapon could charge, finally downing the first boss far behind Pinder and Cosmic, and then his surprise again at the 2 hour mark when he realized he could use different weapons. However, towards the latter parts of the race, Champi got the hang of controlling his megaman (and the save state function, blatent cheating), and went on to complete all initial 8 stages before finishing slightly behind the 1st place finishers.
4th place: Edge
Starting the race strongly being the first to finish the intro stage, it was all down hill their for Cam, struggling for a long time on the penguin boss, followed by even more struggling on the next stage after, he was quiet, only heard venting his frustration occasionally in the last 2 hours. In the last 30 minutes of the race he was AFK. If anyone sees Cam, please be sure to let us know that he's alive as we're currently fearing for his well being and have still not heard from him.
Thanks everyone who tuned in, played along, helped us with the rules/game and participated in this retro rumble! We'll be aiming to do another one perhaps around November/December area after uni finishes. Suggestions for the next game are very welcome!
