I Stole my first nickname "Hitman" from an old school game called Mech Commander (god that's embarrassing). Hitman was some minor character you picked up a couple of levels into the game. I think he wore a bandana, and at the age of 12, people who wear bandana's were cool.
A couple of years later the game Hitman was released. Which is fine... Then Hitman 2... then a ******* Hitman movie based on the game.
And suddenly people are like "Oh, Cool name. I liked that game/movie"
To which i would reply "It's not FROM that game...it's from another...different game. One that you probably haven't heard of"
Making me sound like a video game hipster.
But seriously Hitman became nearly impossible to take. I became Hitman_1234 Or _Hitman_.
In real life you have things other than your name that identify you, your face, your voice but online your name is the only part of your outward facing identity. It felt like I lost my identity a little bit...
So I abandoned "hitman" and I turned my name stealing to literature.
One of my favorite books of all time. Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. It's a little confusing explaining why but the sister of the main character uses a pseudonym to publish works, and hold debates on public forums. The name she choose was a Greek Philosopher/Statesman. Demosthenes.
Now i know Demosthenes probably isn't a super unique name but it's a slight more unique than 'Hitman'.
A couple of days ago I heard that a Ender's Game movie is in the works. And rightly or wrongly that sent a wave of panic through me.
I'm still trying to decide if I should be worried but im interested...
Has anyone ese had similar stories? Maybe you really liked the name "Player 1"?
Thankfully not the name Flamga is pretty unknown to most people and I actually made it up. However the only site my name has been taken on is Twitter of all things >.< lol
i wonder if anything will ever ruin my name? i would be muchly interested in it

I used to have much trouble getting "Asylum" back in high school with the advent of the internets (yes I'm old ) so switched to AsylumofSouls and the only problem I have now is the old too many characters dilemma.
Also used Tshayela which is "sweep" or "sweeper" in an African language but switched it to Suipr for sc2 to shorten it and because I usually use Tshayela for female characters
I don't foresee pop culture references unless they're originally based off me
EDIT: I did play Quake as "Shadowfax" and "Deathcoil" for a time but those were intentional references

I stole my name from a band I liked when I was 15 years old. Kurt was my hero and still is, I always felt there was something remarkable about him and how he rejected the fame his out of this world talent inevitably forced upon him. Although dave grohl is pretty good and I thought he was a much better drummer than a leader singer, hes like masters league if you compare him to GSL champion Kurt!
I still like nirvAnA till this day and that other day went through a couple of their unplugged videos on youtube. Nowadays I don't listen to this type of music anymore but it was nice to reminiscence for a while.
I am always suprised at how often I get people saying "I LIKE TURTLES!" either opponents or people PMing if they see the name turtles in a chat channel.

When I first started watching BW replays and trying to learn more, I had a ton of [NC]..ShinyA's reps and studied them. A band I used to listen to, Dir En Grey, their drummer's name is Shinya, and there's this MMA guy, Shinya Aoki, who's pretty bad ass and broke this guys arm then flipped him off in the ring once.
So when SC2 came out I figured shinyA would be a pertty cool name to use
I stole my name from the name of a ship mentioned on Stargate Atlantis.
Shoulda spelt it "Adaris" but Edarus came out... now i'm not even sure how its pronounced...
Some people say Ed-aris, E-darus, Adaris (soft i)... Haven't come across any other users of it though.
Previous aliases?
Jackal
Jackal43 (43 referring to german rifle Gewehr 43)
*stopped using the above around 2005/06, used mostly in shooters or Combat Flight Sims)*
Edarus
Weiland
Tapion
Fun side-note, a mate (and fellow clansman) [TA] Mahonanida got his name through the WoW "randomise" function and we've NEVER seen another person with that name EVER.

Well i first i used my rl nickname Darty and still use it for Steam however i tried a few non steam games and decided i would choose my favorite character from MASH Hawkeye however since the avengers movie everyone thinks its that Hawkeye..
Well I've been through my share of cheesy stolen reference names including Double_Agent121 because I was a big fan of Splinter Cell at the time. I never really learned to move away from bad online names but I finally decided to just stop changing it atleast. Originally though it was "teh_HyDr0iD" until I matured a bit and just changed it to "Hydroid".
I was a fan of NCIS at the time i made my name Spook - Spy agent what ever, only problems i have had is when an American talks to me.... As apparently its a derogatory term for a black person i didn't know at the time of course
First online nick i used for gaming was actually LiquidMetal... ^^
My current one came from woolworths shopping with my mum and we bought some salami and the price tag said "meatex salami" ^^
My first aliases online were all Star Wars references (ForceYoda / Chewwyy) because I loved Star Wars as a kid, and then I switched to using my IRL nickname which isn't big in pop culture.
