delete had a flawless run through the tournament, not dropping a game! Huge congrats to him, FUS RO DAH.
Although there were a LOT of people missing, good games were had and it was fun overall. I learned a ton about running tournaments and I have a lot to think about before my next one.
Congrats to TADivinity on second place, total gosu in the making.
A huge thanks to MazEi for streaming, everyone loved his casting. Also thanks to everyone who showed up and nirvAnA for plugging the tournament around the place!
There will be a next time...but until then, I will be releasing a replay pack of the best games and doing a writeup about the tourney, with match analysis and maybe an interview or two as well.
Introduction
Hello, I'm Ruscour. Out of boredom, I am hosting this tournament, where people shall fight to the death for my amusement. As for incentive to play, I have to give to the winner a copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, in the form of a key that you can activate on Steam. Depending on the response to the tournament, I am considering adding a monetary prize as well. This is my first time hosting a tournament, it was something I always wanted to do, so hopefully I don't mess it up ^^
For everything you need to know about Skyrim, check out deL's review here!
Oh who am I kidding, this is all you need to know:
For further incentive to play, even if you suck, I'll be randomly selecting anyone who shows up and giving them a beta key to Tribes: Ascend.
So what's the catch? The catch is this: the map pool includes exclusively community maps. There will be no ladder maps, and no tournament maps. We've seen tournaments around the globe host contests, a community map made its way into the next Arena of Legends, yet nothing of the sort has penetrated SEA. Hopefully we'll see tournaments try adding some community maps in the future.
This tournament is open, so the only requirement to play is that you have a SEA account, I don't care if you're bronze or grandmaster!
When and Where
This tournament is scheduled for Friday, 6th January, starting at 7:00pm GMT+10 (Brisbane time); so that's 8:00pm daylight savings time (NSW/Victoria/etc), 5:00pm Perth time, etc, figure it out from there.
On the SEA server, join the channel RCMO to find your opponent. A bracket will be posted once signups are finished!
Format
This will be 32-man single elimination tournament. To keep things quick, it will be Best of 1 in the Round of 32 and Round of 16, and then Best of 3 up until the finals which will be Best of 5.
The starting map for each round is as follows:
Round of 32: Concrete Dreams(Bo1)
Round of 16: Ohana (Bo1)
Round of 8: Overgrown (Bo3)
Round of 4: Sanctuary (Bo3)
Finals: Cloud Kingdom (Bo5)
Standard "loser picks next map" style. For example, in the Round of 8 if you lose on Overgrown, the next game is hosted on the map of your choice. If you win on that map, then your opponent picks the last map. Pretty simple stuff.
All results must be PM'd to AsGRuscour.385 at the conclusion of the series.
Uh, what else...race-picking is fine as long as you let your opponent know beforehand, bring any disputes to me, and I have the right to disqualify anyone if they're caught being a dickhead.
Map Pool
Unfortunately, there are a lot of great community maps that aren't published on SEA, or that aren't updated! There's enough, however, to use for a tournament. The map pool is as follows:
[TLMC] Ohana by Plexa [TLMC] Sanctuary by Plexa [TLMC] Cloud Kingdom by Plexa TPW Overgrown by TPW TPW Artifice by TPW TPW Concrete Dreams by TPW TPW One Must Fall by TPW
Stream
Unfortunately living in rural Queensland doesn't give me the 'nets to stream. If anyone wants to volunteer to stream, that can observe the games (casting is a bonus), please PM me! All replays will be released.
Signups
To sign up, simply post in this thread with the following details:
In-game name and identifier
Race and League
where you're from!
and you'll be signed up! If you can't make it and you've already signed up, be a good guy and let me know.
Way too volatile and in my opinion rather Protoss unfriendly. It was a nice display of how maps can be more versatile than what we currently see and still have validity, but there's no way in hell Haven's Lagoon could ever be a competitive map and to include it here when a lot of people won't play on the maps beforehand would give a massive advantage to people who already knew the map well due to its unusual nature.
i found this awesome map you should include!
it's not on ladder or in any tournament map pools so it should qualify?
it's called steppes of war should be easy to find with a search

i guess i need to learn how to play now...
I have contacted Diamond from ESV about publishing the ESV maps to SEA and he said he is trying to acquire a SEA account to do so.
IronMan, mapmaker from TPW, has asked for post-tournament feedback on his map Ohana.
I have decided that there won't be any money for this one, however once ESV maps are posted I will almost certainly host another tournament similar to this (though I'm unsure on the format) with prize money (probably $50 total).
Flamga has offered to stream, woot! Anyone else who can stream would be greatly appreciated as well. I'm looking into being able to do so myself.
Because IronMan wants feedback on Ohana, anyone that is Masters+ that finishes top 8 that gives well-detailed feedback on the map (more than a paragraph, with constructive criticism) will get a seed into the next tournament I do. I'll give you a bye...or something. As I said, still deciding on format. But it'll be worth it!
The tournament will not be delayed. It is a shame that there are conflicting times with the NZ Cup, I will be more careful in the future to schedule at times where there is nothing else going on. Everything will proceed according to plan, muahaha.
Addressing the lack of signups, this is now a 24 man tournament and signups are closed from this point. GMs will be seeded into the Round of 16 and have a bye for the first round.
EDIT: there is literally one spot left, first in best dressed
Reminder to make sure you're in the channel RCMO by the designated time (5pm SGT), so 7pm Brisbane, 8pm Sydney, so on so forth yada yada.
EDIT: I have also changed the maps from the Round of 16 and Round of 32 around, this is reflected in the OP and on the bracket. Seeming as GMs are seeded into the Round of 16, this gives Ohana playtime from every GM which will provide good feedback to IronManSC.
There's not, but it is almost certain that not all 24 people will show up. So if you just show up and someone's missing, I'll put you in the bracket and such.
once again, thanks ruscour for running this and thanks mazei (and chadmann!) for streaming. My first ever win, and it was awesome
About the map Ohana, I think it's a really good map, my favourite out of all the ones that were chosen. I can't say much for ZvT, but I think PvZ is a bit favoured for Protoss because both of the potential third bases for Zerg are pretty far away from the natural, until the rocks are broken. Kind of like shattered temple. Since the protoss can FFE pretty easily, any 2base pressure from the protoss is relatively harder for the zerg to defend. On the other hand, it's pretty easy for protoss to take their third base since the ramp is relatively small, and the second entrance to the third with the destructable rocks is small as well. So I think it's a bit too easy for protoss to get on 3base and get their deathball. PvP and PvT seem fine to me.
Overall, besides that, I think it's a good and balanced map.
