Personally I've been looking forward to this game since it's announcement many years ago.. now that it is here I'm (almost) ecstatic.. but at the same time I'm afraid that I won't like what I find!
Could a mod please move this to general, I accidently posted this in the wrong section!

I have waited along time for this to come out ( was an avid kotor fan) i applied for beta however i read somewhere that it was going to have a delayed release in the pacific region, due to what they say; is to make sure the servers arnt bogged down as like happened to WOW's release.
However im not a huge fan of MMO and im not very inticed to pay $15 dollars or watever it is to just play single player.
I've also been waiting for ages. I was lucky enough to beta test for a weekend a few weeks ago and it's awesome. This weekend is a mass test before launch.
@krycheck - they are launching in the US and most of EU on 20/12, but not is Oceania. I've heard rumors about when AU/NZ will get it, but they aren't based on much. I'd say BW will decide when after they have seen how the main launch goes. EB has promo boxes already, but no release date.
In the meantime you can order off Amazon and still play if your keen. Lot's of Aussies have.
I'm on the fence about this one. Not sure if I'll pick it up or not. Can some lovely person give me a quick rundown on what separates this from the plethora of other MMO titles out there?
I'm in for the stress-test this weekend as well, though I won't have the chance to get on much.
Cute, as far as I'm aware it is essentially a traditional MMO done Bioware's way. If you are a fan of their single-player efforts then it sounds like it would probably interest you. If not, then probably not. Will give a bit more of a details analysis after the weekend.
Well I'll pick it up on Australian release.. if I like the stress test. I'm in no hurry to play an MMO, I need to get good at sc2.. but still I'll be interested by time it is released :P

Eddie, the last cinematic trailer that I saw, which I believe is the intro for the game, annoyed me more than anything. It's almost like Bioware just decided to dump as many Star Wars clichés as possible into a single clip. >.<

The cliches are good, they help to improve the immersion, just another way of letting you know your actually in the star wars universe. It was like this for dragon age origins where there were alot more cliches present and some very suspicious similarities to lotr.
The beta is an open beta, so everyone who signed up for the beta should have received an invite. I did .
Anyway, the non-disclosure agreement has been lifted now, so who wants to see an in-depth review of it before it even comes out so they can decide whether or not to buy it?
I'm a fanboy, but i'll be honest about it

Damn it's sad they are so slow.... I didn't receive the beta key, cause I'm in Malaysia? Or something along those lines for sure.
@Eddie : Oh I never found the first and second videos, thanks for sharing.
P/s: The first vid is soooo classic, escaping leaving the jedi master behind to die. And the Sith apprentice taking over.

Does the first video start with a capture bounty hunter who owns a 'copy' of the Millennium Falcon. They get attacked by two Sith. At least one of the Jedi/Sith has an obligatory double-ended lightsabre. The 'Millennium Falcon' is used to escape because it's the only ship that is fast enough. The master dies and the apprentice survives?
I was absolutely psyched for TOR up until I saw that trailer.

I don't know. Personally, I want to be told or experience an new story, not the same tired old one that we've had a hundred times over.

Was thinking the exact same thing.... So unoriginal.
I got am invite for the game aswell, tbh i had forgot that i had even applied, i will give it ago and see what i think though. I didn't mind those trailers etc, has gotten some interest from me now!
I'm in, been waiting aaaages! I'll be up 3am saturday morning when it opens up for us playing for sure!
Probs be streaming too, just so my mates can have a looksy, although a few of them got in too.
I've already tested a previous beta and i really enjoyed it =) I'm in this beta too and im looking forward to see what changes have been implemented.
I also have the game on preorder haha
Downloaded the client overnight. Took a while. Just finished before I had to leave for work.
Looking forward to putting in a few hours.
Where do I go to download it? I mean I followed the link, downloaded the 24mb 'client' - it then tells me I need 20gb free space... installs.. comes up with a login screen and then doesn't download anything ;3
You need to login first, then it starts the 20Gb download. Actually, it fails login first and gets you to set up five(!!!) security questions, then you try to login and it asks you one of the security questions you just created, then it will let you download the client.
So in a nutshell (for those asking), SWTOR is a cross between WoW and Mass Effect (although it is more like other MMO's than WoW). Bioware has built in the '4th MMO pillar' of Story. The whole game is fully voice acted from fed-ex quests (which don't feel very fed-exy) through to story driven Flashpoints and Operations (instanced dungeons).
The story itself is very KOTORy in that it is set 300ish year after KOTOR. From the 20 level I played it wasn't very clichey, but was definitely star wars.
There are 8 base classes, 4 republic and 4 sith. Each has it's own unique class stroyline and each has 2 advanced classes. Recently in an interview the Bioware CEO's said that if you were to quit your days job to play SWTOR it would take you 10 months to get through every class story once. That doesn't include the flashpoints/ops or group content, PvP or repeatable stuff.
As another indicator of size, BW has said that SWTOR is larger in content size than all other BW games put together.

That's interesting. There are people who work full-time and play 'full-time' (ie. 40 hours a week). I do wonder how many people would be bothered wanting to go through all of the classes?

It's less about wanting to and more about 'needing to'
When I tested I played all 4 republic classes. I had some strong views about the classes I would like an the ones I wouldn't, but I seriously liked them all. Each had different enough mechanics that had good overall utility that each was just different and fun.
In terms of story, that is what really sucked me in the most. All I wanted to do was find out what happened next for each. Each story was incredibly unique, even though the starting zones were shared with 1 other class, and each story was super Star Warsy.
For me, even though I'll be playing a Jedi Guardian, the two most interesting (and less predictable) stories at the start were the Trooper and then the Smuggler. As a class, I already know I have zero interest in the Smuggler, but I will play through it just to see where the story goes.
I've no interest in being a Sith either, but I know I'll play just to see the stories.

We'll see where I fit in. 4-5 years ago, when I had more time, I would have definitely been in the position you describe. At the moment I've got a currently untouched copy of Mass Effect 2 waiting for me to play at some point. That being said, this may actually be the MMO to finally keep my interest.
So after 2 days of the beta, I've become adamant about a couple of things...
1) I must have this game.
2) I am very angry at Bioware for not doing an Oceanic release.
3) I must download this game or purchase it from somewhere.
4) It is possibly the most fun I've had in an MMO in years.
I'll explain point 4 though. As was explained earlier in the topic, Bioware has added the fourth pillar to it's MMORPG... 'story telling'... I'm the kind of guy that will look at a game and if it doesn't have a decent story, I won't actually continue playing it.. Bioware took what I loved about KOTOR and what I loved about ME and combined them into an effective medium for their story telling.. I feel as though I am attached to this character I've created this weekend and that is something very difficult for me to do in an MMO (let alone a beta).
I haven't touched an MMO since DCUO earlier this year (I admit, I enjoyed playing that with friends).. but this just kicks the crap out of that game.
I have a couple of issues though, particularly with travelling and travel speeds. You don't get your first movement speed upgrade until level 14, and then it is only +35% (should be + 50% imo).
My companion glitches occasionally, and that is really annoying.
When I alt-tab (I play windowed mode).. my game goes all weird and does some stupid stuff when I go back into the game world.

I loved the story so far. Being able to sass everyone is awesome. Although I'm a little vain and I want my qtpie Twi'leck to remain free of any deformities (doing evil deeds scars your face, get the red sith eyes and whatnot).
I was told there were invading sith running around but I couldn't find any, people were cheering at having won the battle though. Dear god I loved back-chatting everyone...
considering it is in the beta, it played fantastic.
Games rarely keep my interest for long these days and I swore I'd never play another MMO. I cannot wait for this to go live. I must have it.
I got into the beta this weekend, haven't been able to play much but OMG its a very good game, the PVP is still being worked on to be expected but the levelling is the most fun I'e ever had in an MMO, and I HATE levelling. The story is so rich its amazing.
I will however be praying that the endgame content is just as good so it can hook me in

Quoted for TRUTH! agree in every part, however its to be expected no oceanic servers, bandwidth just costs too much for it to be viable QQ

This happens to me too, i assume it will be fixed by release with drivers etc
Aha, I remember when I was talking to you about TOR when we went out to lunch with Andy and Kelly that time.. who knew that the game would actually be this solid!
I mean, the mechanics in the game work a lot like WoW (with cover and ranged tanks I'm sure we'll see a lot of variations in the future though)... but I only see that as a good thing (it's easy to pick up and play if your character isn't doing weird stuff right off the bat).
The story is so immersive though, I got up early to play Saturday morning.. and all of a sudden it was 12am Sunday and I was like 'wtf where did my day go'. They also did a great job making their decisions tough to make (I was tempted to make Darkside choices even though I was playing a LS character). Their first flashpoints were also very fun (imo the Republic one was better, but the Empire had its moments).
I think it is a must try.. Now to find a place to pre-order!

Yay! I've been accepted into the last beta. We'll see how long this one goes for, but I'll have to give it a proper crack this time, as opposed to about an hour over two characters. >.<

theres another beta? nooooooooooo i pray that my old account gets in too >.< when is the final weekend stress test?
Pre-ordered from amazon.com.. they gave me my preorder code but no game code.. so my guess is we may get early access... but I'm uncertain because they didn't give me my game code, just the preorder one. :S

Hahaha and arent they saying that it will not be delivered now until after the 25th december? So you can play for 5 days before and then not play until you recieve the game? or can you keep using the early game code until you get your full code?

Bloody Bioware not doing a global release!!!
they confirmed the beta can be patched to live version so its ok!

Yes, but prerodering from amazon only gives you a preorder game code.. not the actual code, so I'm not sure if it will transfer properly. We'll have to see though!
Testing starts again this weekend... I wonder if we automatically get in!

Nope, you'll get an email if you got in. Or you would have by now. Anyone know how long this last test goes for? Also, there's only something like 5 servers still there. I lost my Jedi character.
New Jedi character. Up to level 5 so far. Having a lot of fun as a Knight instead of a Consular. It's a pity I can't force throw stuff, but leaping at enemies never gets old.
I'm hoping to get a beta key cos I loved KotOR, but im a bit worried with the graphics of the game.. they don't seem all that much better than kotor to be perfectly honest, and kotor is like 7 years old. I'm hoping for some graphical improvements.
That said, love SW and can't wait to play it upon release.
ManicMarine, the graphics are way better than KOTOR. It's a case of wearing rose-tinted glasses. If you go back I'm sure you'll find that KOTOR doesn't look nearly as good as you remember. This tends to happen with a lot of series.
As for getting into the beta, as far as I am aware it's now done and dusted. That is it. You just have to wait for release now.
To be honest, the game's graphics are pretty.. average.. but they're stylized... so they're the kind of graphics that look good on all kinds of systems... they just don't look 'amazing' like Aion or Skyrim.. just solid like Dragon Age/DA2.
The beta is also over now, the game is being released in like 3 weeks.. and early access starts in 8 days from today. I think I'll get a couple of days of early access, but I still have to wait for my main game to arrive T_T so excited! e

I've been watching streams of players in early-access and this looks really amazing/fun!
Apparently the unofficial Aussie server is 'The Swiftsure'. Shit tons of guilds already in this from Australia! I'm mega keen: http://torguild.net/oceanic/
I was reading somewhere a few days ago that BioWare were confident this game is going to be selling a fair few million copies
Jekk Jekk Thar is the second unofficial server, and that is the one I picked >_> I don't really like the idea of being in 2 hour long queues on harbinger.

So I'm gonna give this a try while I wait for GW2, and I haven't played an MMO in forever.
Is there a way I can digitally purchase this and play right now? I'm bored zzz
If you go to the SW:TOR website there is a link saying if you pre-order now you can get early game access. Give that a look?

You can't preorder an Australian version of the game though. So I think my options are to either import an American version from Amazon or something (not attractive, I want to play now, the game is out dammit) or use one of the shadier sites to obtain a key. Laaaaaame
So i got bored and Just ordered it off amazon (i was gunna wait until after christmas),
But since its still a 3-4 day wait even with express shipping, i figured screw it, i'll buy now.
Lo and behold, 10 minutes later. "Your early game access has begun",
The morale of the story? - Watch out, I'm coming for ya.
Edit : Someone stole my name on Swiftsure! D: Which means i'm stuck with my old wow name "Bashnek" (add me!) , back to ooooold times.
alright I managed to get myself a preplay key, now whats the best way to actually buy the game, is there any way to bypass the region lock on teh swtor website?
I opted to go for the seedy website method. I accidentally ordered two keys (not my finest moment) so if they actually come, someone wanna buy one for fifty bucks or something?

Well I'm almost 90% sure that the one I'm using now won't carry over.. In the options it's already asking me for my real game key.. If it does, sweeeeet as! On top of that I'm planning on giving my gf's sister a copy for Xmas anyway, so either way it's a win.
30 minutes till servers are back up :-O I'm already slightly addicted.
key A - preorder key (allows pre access play)
key B - game key that comes with box/serial key (allows play after pre order time)
if you bought from amazon you are emailes preorder key and the real key comes with box (mine arrived today)
also for what server u want
pvp - swiftsure (has moderate q's during AU timezone)
pve - the harbinger (also moderage q;s)
pve - jekk jekk tar (less q's but less oceanic population)
I actually purchased two versions of the digital game. One site didn't respond, so I went to another, which charged me instantly. Then a few hours later the first site charged me too zzz.
Oh man, just how big is this download?!
And I guess I'll be playing on Swiftsure! I can handle with queues.
Hmm not sure how I feel about the 1500 queues I'm currently experiencing...
I don't think I can do a Blackrock again.. That took 2 years to stop queues.
btw,
name: Rockstarred
Server: Swiftsure
Allegiance: Ze Dark Zide.
Class: Inquisitor, like every other person in the game.
Current Level: 9
Race: Whatever Darth Mauls are called :-)
An hour into the Swiftsure queue I bailed and joined Wound in the Force, the (apparent) 2nd unofficial aussie pvp server. at least until swiftsure is a little less hectic.

Reason: its pvp server.
The game WILLBe released down here (It was always gunna happen, but theres a date now! ), with Official servers (Not sure if they'll physically be here or just named for us, either way is better than what we currently have)
"Right now we are targeting March 1st, but that could change as our number one priority is making sure that customers have a great service to play on,
"For those of you who may have already imported the game, we will be investigating solutions to allow you to continue to play on a local server once they come online in March."
^^ I'm hoping that means free Character transfers to our servers when they're up.
I needed to take the Black Talon to Dromund Kaas. So I found a guy to do it with. Cool cool. Give him the "hey sup" cause I'm super manner like that. No response, but that's cool. Whatever.
So we progress through the dungeon, and end up dying to one of the bosses. I politely told him that standing in the fire means that he's going to die. Still no response. We proceed to die to the same boss three or four times. He still kept standing in it. Somehow we eventually get through it.
His PC must have been old or something because every time we died or had to make a decision I had to wait a full sixty seconds or so for him to respawn.
We wiped on the second boss like five times. I reminded him not to stand to close when she does her super move thing. He responds!
"o"
After two or three more shots, he got it down, and was running away like a pro. We'd been there for like two hours now, so I was glad to just be done.
The last boss drops a nice weapon for him t.t
At the end we decided where we wanted to get off. I selected Drumand Kaas.
He selected back to the fleet. We went back to the fleet t.t
A nice welcome back to MMO's for me ^-^
(I'm not nearly as mad as I sound bro)

hahaha I know how ya feel, when a clothy rolls on your medium gear and then proceeds to pull almost every mob in the instance :-O
Haha, I haven't had a bad experience with any groups yet.. but there was one guy who accused us of 'ninjaring' a chest from him when we killed the elites that belonged to it.. so we got blacklisted from some ultimately unimportant Republic guild because of a kid who got mad that he couldn't kill anything.
Anyway, I rolled Jekk Jekk Tar primarily because of the queue being so huge on Swiftsure and especially Harbinger.

Yeah I've been waiting for swiftsure for over an hour now and I'm still only 200th in the queue.....I think I'll jump on Jek Jek Tar....means a new char tho.
I'm gunna stick it out with swiftsure, for now atleast. i like the guild idea, Would it be worth doing it now or would we be better off waiting for aus servers to open up?

It'd be fun playing with some of you guys
Im currently lvl 28 having fun, i was cockblocked for 4-5 hours at lvl 24 cuz of mass pvp and not upgrading gear (marauders are stupidly gear dependant) but so far so good. the daily space/pvp quests are a good way to push out XP in an hour
Question for all you playing SW:TOR, how many of you have played WoW? And of the people that have played it how would you compare the two? Do you find it does things better/worse or the same as WoW and would the transition be tough.
Trying to decide if I want to switch but I always end up comparing MMORPG's to WoW and most are lacking.

I played WoW for like five years or something, so I'm pretty familiar with it. I'm only like level 12 or something in ToR right now, so take this with a grain of salt.
Out of all the MMO's I've played, this is probably the most similar to WoW. If you don't enjoy WoW, you probably won't enjoy this game. It's very very very similar. There is very little transition if you've played WoW, you can pretty much predict what you need to do. The combat system and quests are almost identical.
The main difference is a very strong focus on story. All quests are fully voiced with cutscenes, so you find yourself much more immersed in the game. Different choices in the game change how things happen. Even in instances, the party makes choices as they go, and depending on the choices, different things happen in the instance (for example in one dungeon, the first time I did it we let a person lived and then went on to a boss. The next time we did it, we killed him, and ended up going a completely different way after and fighting a different boss.
In my opinion, out of all the WoW clones, this is the strongest that I've played. Compared to WoW, the main story and quest progression is a lot stronger. I haven't pvp'd or done endgame dungeons though, so I can't really comment on them.
But now I'm rambling, do you have any other specific questions? What did you find lacking in other titles?
Essentially the questing and dungeoning were what I had a problem with in other MMO's. Levelling is levelling, it's always going to be a grind eventually, I can handle that. I'm not a huge one for lore, I mostly skip all quest text but that could be because I have so many WoW characters. I honestly don't remember if I paid any attention to the story the first time I played through.
I suppose it would just be small differences, if it is similar as you say I think I should be safe getting it. ^_^ My main aim in WoW and subsequently all MMO's I play would be endgame raiding/dungeoning. I guess I either have to bite the bullet and buy it or wait til some of you guys hit level cap and start doing it. :P

Ah okay, if you aren't really into lore, I don't know if I'd recommend this game then. I don't know if I'd enjoy it if it wasn't for the dialogue and cutscenes. It's essentially doing what WoW has been doing for the last seven years. I find that I'm pretty much driven to play to find out what happens next.
As for endgame raiding, I doubt that right now the game has a system as fleshed out and developed as WoW, which I feel still has the strongest endgame pve stuff. If all you're looking for is endgame content, perhaps stick with WoW for now at least
Thing is I don't know if the reason I'm not interested in WoW lore is because they do it somewhat poorly or if it's repetitive. Fingers crossed I get it for Christmas and I don't have to make the choice, then I can just choose whether or not to continue subscription.
Thanks for the info

I think I want to play on Swiftsure too. Yes queue times are bad now, but when everything settles down, I'd like to be playing on the most populated server.
- there is no cross server pvp or instancing yet
- bioware have stated they are keeping server capacoty low for the beginning of release to spread out players.
so the q's will go down naturally as people reroll and bioware up the capacity. I for one dont want ot be stuck on a low population server once the server caps are lifted !

Unstable, Bioware are increasing the server caps as we speak. They're keeping the server limit low so that the servers all have sufficient population that you don't have dead areas. They're doing this to avoid the situation that you are describing.
That being said, RockPaperShotgun had an article about the queues and two of the server that are nearing their max population limit are Harbringer and Swiftsure, because they're the unofficial Aussie servers, as well as normal US servers.

Yea thats what i mean though. because its oceanic you dont have many other options, so putting up with the Q is the best thing to do atm.
Or you could do what I'm doing and wait for the local release.
I'm hoping there's gonna be free character transfers for you guys. And that the local servers are actually in Australia and not Singapore.
I highly doubt they will be in AU, I useto work in datacentre's that held gaming servers etc. the bandwidth cost is just stupid and not feasible. SG is more likely. But at the same token i highly doubt there will not be character transfers.
there is also the chance that the servers are just named oceanic so if there is transfers you will still have the people who don't want to change servers as there is no benefit (being in SEA location for latency)
Just got this recently and rolled an IA on Empire, I'm on the Mask of Nihilus server. My character's name is Vishor. Anyone else on that server here? Would be awesome to play with some fellow SC2SEA peeps.
EDIT: Also made a Jedi Shadow on the Swiftsure, name is Rhondus.

Unfortunately I think most aussies rolled on harbinger or swiftsure. Personally I'm on swiftsure, got a 50 operative healer and a republic gunslinger, who's almost 50. Should reroll imo on one of those two servers since they are actually pretty full during our primetime.

My mates and I play on a low pop pvp server the bastion on the republic side , we figured we would play on a low pop server now and transfer to aussie servers later.
Yeah heard they were the unofficial aus servers, im on mask because my brother is on there. Like fadey ill tranfer over to the oceanic servers when theyre released. Pretty fun game so far, also playing an Operatiive. How you finding them at lvl 50 ridiculisk ?

Well prior to the nerfs they got recently, they had incredible PvP burst damage in concealment spec.
Acid Blade talents + Hidden Strike talents gave you a 3 second stun + 50% armor pen for 15 sec. On top of that you are essentially a rogue with a gun...and heals. They have since nerfed that into the ground though.
I've since respec'd to Medicine and have been acting as main heals for my friends. Interesting healing mechanics, with the added difficulty of juggling Tactical Advantage.
The only downside I've noticed so far, is in PvP, healing is quite hard as I have to remain stationary.
Pretty much got a giant target painted on my back at all times.
Other than that I honestly love the operative, coolest class story from what I've heard/seen of the others.
Certainly the most epic. But I don't want to spoil the surprise.
Anyone who's on Swiftsure should look me up;
Empire: 50 Operative (HackdZ)
Republic: 39ish Gunslinger (Slipp)

I picked this game up however, I was ultimately disappointed by the combat system. I did not know what it would be like. I had a month subscription and I am not looking back now haha.
I'll wait for a private server to appear and play on that hopefully if one ever comes out
Unfortunately it appears as though we can only transfer 1 character for free and there are no details as to the cost of transferring a second. I haven't read any official word on this so I suppose we'll find out once we get our emails from swtor.
Make sure everyone here transfers to the PvP realm when you do use your transfer!
Yeah you guys should all Decide on a server - This might be your only chance for a while to get everyone onto the one Server and make a guild/just chill.
PvP server, heavy traffic at the moment but less that the PvE server.
I'll be transferring my Jugg over (Bjornbrandr) asap and when they release paid transfers I'll swing over my Assassin, most likely. Will just remake Powertech to save monies.
Kinda upset about the whole "only one toon transfer free" thing
Edit: Note that they will be releasing more SEA servers once demand is apparent. This probably won't be too quickly as they'll like to watch the fluctuation and then let it settle before deciding that a server is crowded.
I can't even play any more strangely TT
I always get cannot retrieve patch info errors after moving into the dorm
But all other games and even torrents work fine so wtf?
