Season 1 BSGCL Winner - KA's Captain
Winner of Today's Community Open - Update: Over. YoonYJ wins
I know I already have one (THANK YOU NIRVANA ), but I want to make a suggestion or two anyway:
1 - SEABET! The melbourne cup of the SC2SEA community. I know the coding is difficult, but when the betting was implemented it was quite fun, and gave the site a new, fun feature to use. It could be used for SEA only games, or could also be used to bet on GSL/MLG/IEM etc games with fake money, or using the same format from the first season
2 - DOTA/LoL/HoN/FPS etc. section woop! If one of the main goals of sc2sea is to promote e sports (which is a direction we are likely headed based on the community). It would only have to be a little forum for people who play other games with an e-sport background, which could net the site a larger fan base, and more to work with in terms of tournaments, casters, admins etc. Perhaps it is something to think about, in order to further the SEA gaming scene without giving up our beloved Blizzard games
Suggestion: I know it's small and probably would just require a thread, but maybe have a list of all Barcrafts in the SEA region and dates of events that will be held at what barcraft/s such as GSL finals?
Biggest thing the site needs is to resize to the shape of the browser window.
I'm at work using Google Chrome. When I largen, widen or narrow the window, the chatbox and whole site should shrink and expand with it so everything remains functional.
As it stands, everything just requires a shitload of scrolling.
Also, there really needs to be an option to disable the chatbox from automatically scrolling to the bottom every time a new message appears.
Perhaps putting up a visual notification - unread messages or something - rather than instantly scrolling down would be great. That way I can scroll up and peacefully catch up on the conversation.

paperclip our saviour fixed the scroll issue thing tonight, try it out!!
Bring back ladder game analysis of the TGM coaches. They helped me a ton. It will provide the sc2sea community with useful information, tips and strategies for their games. I remember PiG started doing that a long time ago but the idea slowly died. Making 7 of the 10 articles exclusive to TGM members, as it was before, would be nice, so members get continued benefit. I understand that the coaches are very busy, so they gradually forgot or didn't have time to commit to this. I just think it's a great idea.
A sidebar tab that shows the main tournament dates would be nice. eg. "GSL Finals: XX:XXSG XX:XXAUS XX:XXNZ. This helps with keeping track of tournament games in case anyone follows them closely. It would be a hassle if someone has to manually upload it though. Maybe at least a link to gomtv.net/mlg/IGN when there's a tournament.
Well I didn't quite make the cut with my video and can't write a blog on my phone and living in korea makes winning from watching pig's show impossible so let's see if I can luck out on one of the other 2 -- for fade!
So my suggestion I have actually made before to some extent
Basically I think implementing replay parsing to the site and linking that with tournaments and leagues to automate the running of tournaments more. Once games have been played replays can be uploaded to determine score and winners with minimal admin oversight
Also it can be expanded later to have statistics on players like winrates based on map, matchup etc.
I'll have a go at the suggestions for contest 3:
A) Have a section in the Diablo 3 section where you can find information or a graph that plots the Real Money vs Gold exchange rate (assuming Blizzard doesn't do their own).
B) Create a sign up roster where people can queue/ sign up their character for scheduled group games in Diablo 3 (similar to the raid sign up system commonly used in WoW guilds)
C) More competitions with small prizes (e.g. best replays showing X or Y new strat or best BM or funniest fail; best streamer of the month based on a community vote; best blog (you already have this one which is cool), best forum post or best article; most interesting update or breaking news; most active member of forum, most helpful free coach/ replay commentator, etc. Maybe you can approach Razor or TT gaming, etc to donate prizes and in return you let the community know about them.
D) A time zone clock (this is a bit random, but maybe could be cool/ useful?)
E) Allowing for even more upgrade/ customization options for your portrait (e.g. not only changing the picture, but being able to add items, effects or pets or whatever) as rewards for doing stuff or earning rep.
F) Try and invite some "celebrity" casters or players for a show match of some sort and host it here in SEA through this site.
Maybe we can challenge some professional gamer (e.g. Whitera) to take on 2 of ours for lol's - see if he can do it? I'm thinking along the lines of Team Liquid Attack with a twist. It could be a whole 1 hour show rather than just 1 show match.

Listen it to Pig's show.
Play in tmr's CO
Post in this thread
Cos i cant be bothered to write a new blog(Although i did one in General).
Suggestion: How about a donation drive for the prize money towards a SEAClanLeague! Theres been BSGs and PDs but master + players are like soooo left out!
Well firstly ditto benji cause i can't top that but,
I would like to see the "Other gaming thread/category" something like that where we can talk about other cool games we like such as, battlefield 3 which has amazing graphics and a 1.6 million dollar tournament coming up and also stuff like Cod which is fun as HELL
Another idea is the international results thread or category where things dreamhack, ipl and mlg results can go stuff, where no sea events can go and potential traffic dosn't have to run over to TL
gogo random thread pick beta key for me!! *crosses fingers*. Custom game tournaments sound like a great idea btw. My idea would be an all skill level random vs random tournament, now that would be awesome :P

Am I allowed to suggest DOX's replay implementation ?
Anyway, I think that was a really neat idea, similar to wc3replays before, a whole subsection, the replay section gets used a decent amount but they aren't named that well and as an example 57minute TVT, while likely accurate doesn't tell me much about who was playing or why I should watch it.
It would be great to just get more access to replays from other SEA members, maybe they could have columns to suggest/tournament/league it was played in and the players, map races used ?
also, if this doesn't count as it's dox's suggestion/idea/work in progress, this can be my one post

My suggestion, add a SEA Famous faces power Rank thingy! (It's a bit TL.net I know but hear me out)
SEA has some very talented players, xGKing, arcMSI, etc, but outside of SEA these players are relatively unknowns. How about adding a bar to side of main page or something that has the current months best performing players ranked 1 - 10. When you click on their names, it links you to a replay pack of some of the great games that player has played.
The TA guys will know what I'm talking about when I say kinda like riiChards power ranks. But for all of SEA.
I think this will help to spread the love of our awesome SEA players, and get their names out so we can see them playing in more awesome international tourney's. Not too mention make some awesome replays of the best players in sea available with the click of a button...
Anywho, that's me.
Peace

Alot of good people like Moonglade & Tgun are free agents, form an 'official SC2SEA team' with community fundraising efforts. Tshirts & Accessories etc.
Also have a 'SEA Fund' that players & casters can tap into aimed at aiding and assisting with travel costs & increasing tournament presence/coverage within the SEA Region.

too tired to come up with suggestions, too busy for a blog. at work so i can't watch PiG's stream.
-puts on my lucky red underwear, kills a rabbit for its feet, buy a 4-leaf clover from ebay-
EDIT: OKAY! Thought of a suggestion! How about more smileys for the Chatbox! Specifically, the Internet Meme smileys. Can always google knowyourmemes for a reference. our chatbox will look pretty epic =P
E.g. Y U NO BUILD LINGS, wouldn't it look good with the smiley =P

Oh yeah, my suggestion - since the ChatBox is announcing when someone replies to a thread, can we also have it announce whenever a stream goes live, or a blog/replay is posted?
MY Idea:
Bring back SEABET!
I like dox's and pinders ideas too.
Oh and like cybergamer how the forum threads automatically update with the post's from other people and has lie
Turn the CO into a monthly qualifier type of thing again, using an ESL type system (points for winning, 3rd/4th etc) and having a constant leader board somewhere in plain view. Give this site a nice tournament feeling.
Suggestion: We have the BSG and PD clan league's, and these are awesome but I want to see the top of the top going at it too!
Basically the same as the GSTL with the clans like aLt, TA, xGKing, etc.
Only problem might be the depth of teams, but make it happen! (I'll even help!)

Suggestion: Challenge function.. While viewings members profile you can challenge them to a match on sc2 and report the results... when both players report matching results the winner receives points (eg 2 points if both players are in the same league, 3 if the winner is in a lower league 1 if the winner is in a higher league)... these points are show with member posts as a badge of honour!.. Additionally Awards may be given for milestones of points achieved.
Hmm...
Suggestions Suggestions..
Maybe Add More Categories?
umm Ummm create an area that features "Video Of The Day" Be It Starcraft 2 related or just for Funny Stuff that would be cool :x
Some random sc2 games? LoL~~~
My suggestions
-Become more harsh with forum rules as douchebags can get away with quite a bit
-The 'Replays' section needs to have a bigger impact on the site. It should be a very large part of it. Instead of just a small section on the side, maybe a link to a whole forum section to discuss and share replays
That's all i can think of!

An event idea I have is for the top players in SEA duke it out in a massive FFA!!! Love the custom game tournament idea, I'm super speedy in StarJeweled ^^
I would like to see a section for users to upload replays. So then anyone can download and watch them, and give feedback. Or if they're just really bored and want to watch some games.

I personally feel the look and feel of the website could use an overhaul. First impressions on a website are a fairly big deal, and when you enter sc2sea you get a very cluttered layout and a very unprofessional look. The first thing you see is not the News posts, but the Chatbox which is usually well moderated but has times when it is a trollfest, and I wonder if new visitors are maybe scared off by this.
Also on numerous occasions when posting on Teamliquid in threads like 'Why is there no SEA scene' (Not the exact name, just the generally vibe of the OP) they usually make comment that the website is too hard to navigate. Those of us who have been using the site for awhile are used to it but its fairly easy to understand people that simply cannot find certain sections.
As an example, here are 4 community website front pages, just to compare the difference:
All of the other websites have a very clean look and feel, with clearly defined headings and prominent news posts, with some nice graphics. SC2SEA by comparison seems to be built with simply text headings, which do not stand out as well as proper graphics and make it hard to navigate. It also seems built with the idea of everything piled into the homepage, as if the design is assuming people will not click a 'Forum' or 'Chatbox' link if it were implemented.
So how to fix it?
A few changes I would make:
- Remove all the mini forums from the side bars and replace with headings with links to the forums eg: 'SC2 General', 'Tournaments' without showing the 5 recent threads of each forum. Instead have a box with something like 'Latest Posts' similar to the similar named section on the bottom of the webpage. Personally I use this for 90% of my forum browsing anyway.
- Change News, so instead of having the entire news post on the main page, simply have a graphic, a Title and a short Blurb such as 'Moonglade wins WCG Australia' 'Moonglade destroys all other competitors in the WCG Australia Finals, Click to read the full story' with a graphic (a photo or such) to catch a users attention.
- Move the chatbox. Its fun, but it shouldn't be the first thing you see when you enter the website simply because you cant control what is posted there. If a new user enters the website and see's 'PENIS' written 40 times, their first impression is that we are a bunch of immature brats. Perhaps put it underneath the news, or on a separate page.
- Update the look and feel, The anime look is very Asian and is cute, but it isn't the type of look and feel we are used to in ANZ and gives the website an unprofessional vibe. Darker colours, graphics on sidebars and proper graphical headings all improve the professional look of the website.
Anyway that’s my 2c, I understand how much work it would be to accomplish something like this, and I also recognize and respect the time you have spent on the website so far. But you asked for ideas for the website, so there's mine :P I want to come across as constructive, and don't mean to say the website is terrible or anything, just want to make that clear.

I agree and disagree with this. Haha, that's always gonna be the case, isn't it?
The site is very intimidating when you first rock up to it. Personally, now that I know my way around, I love how the site is laid out because I can get to everything from the front page, and I love rocking the chatbox, as you may or may not have noticed.
A couple of options are...
Clean up the front page as Benji suggested. This probably needs to happen regardless, so the first impression isn't a crazy mess. Moving the chatbox to a less prominent place would make me sad, but as Benji said, if someone rocked up to the site yesterday morning while the guy pretending to be minimat was posting all his stuff, they would probably have left pretty quickly. News front and centre is pretty important as well, though it does meant that news posts would probably have to be a minimum quality as well.
Best case scenario, as far as I'm concerned, would be two layouts. A basic cleaned up one like above and then the crazy, everything on one page for people like me who love to have everything right there and don't care.
Benji has articulated my thoughts in a much more formal and direct way than I ever could.
I agree this site needs a change in layout. I don't think we desperately need more features (although the replay parsing/analysis sounds great), but a tweak to the existing features and setup would do wonders for newcomers and regulars alike.
Few comments in general with regards to site layout - some of which are in response to Benji's post above.
I honestly think 99% of the "layout" issues mentioned would be resolved by some slight tuning of the table widths and font sizes. I've never come to the site and seen "PENIS" spam in the chatbox (and I sit here reading chat for at least 10 hours every day) and I honestly think the chatbox adds a lot of value to the site where it is.
We generally keep the front page news posts trimmed with spoiler tags anyway, so having a "under the cut" concept wouldn't add any further value to the site. As for what "we" are used to in ANZ... I dunno who you're speaking for because traditionally sites like PantheonES and AusGamers have had very bright designs. Another thing to consider is that none of the sites listed run exclusively from vBulletin templates and plug-ins, so their ceiling for customisation is much higher.
One of the keys to running a successful community website is to remain unique. Copying what everyone else does (seen it happen hundreds of times) is a quick recipe for crash and burn.
Firstly, yea, 'PENIS' isnt spammed often in chat but i was merely using that as an example. The chatbox is 90% of the time quite good with some very good discussion and whilst I don't post in it often, I read it from time to time. However there are times when chatbox is a trollfest. It does not happen often (Not like it used to before Skybreaker dropped the banhammer ) but I wonder if perhaps new users are scared off by this? Perhaps a solution is to have the Chatbox module minimised as a default for non registered users? I am not even going to pretend to know the code so I am not sure what is possible.
The front page news works well for what it is now, but I am suggesting improving it further by having it look like something that exists on quite alot of other websites. I think it would be easier to skim the news and pick out topics you are interested in if there was 5 articles in a short list which is easier to read, and it also can have set image requirements such as a set size, creating a more uniform look for news posts on the main page, creating a more professional look overall.
I've never heard of PantheonES but Ausgamers looks good, sure the style is bright but it is organized well and even has a similar news feature that I mentioned in my previous paragraph. My point is more to make it look modern with a style, with headers and graphics to segment sections. I mentioned dark colours as most websites that have graphics generally use a darker style (I guess it was a mistake on my part mentioning specifics like colour).
Finally, the uniqueness of our website is the fact that we are proberbly the only SEA community website for SC2, people come here because we have events for SEA, and alot of the top SEA players post here. I doubt many people come here for the Site Layout and not for the SC2 content (Layout does not include the Chatbox as I am not proposing to remove it).
I am not expecting a site overhaul at all, I don't know whats possible with this software, but I just want to get people thinking and perhaps even some small implementations to improve the general layout of the website.
I won't post any more in this thread (Although I will read further posts on the subject) as I do not wish to spam up this thread. I also PM'd Nirvana and confirmed with him that if this post is picked for the random draw, there will be a redraw.
"Chatbox module minimised as a default for non registered users? I am not even going to pretend to know the code so I am not sure what is possible."
Very easy to do just that i think the chatbox as it is now makes the site seem very lively and adds value to it rather then takes it away
Agree 100% with the news. I will be making some changes over the next hour.
I personally love the clean / minimalistic look - i use something similar to this for my other websites http://www.yootheme.com/
Just that with the minimalist look theres always the issue of functionality/ease of use vs aesthetically good looking. i.e everything can be moved away and hidden but its gonna take people 1 or 2 more clicks to get what they want. So yea im still looking for a solution for that.
I think the design can be improved graphics wise / CSS theme and am open to any proposals / solutions. reyzn8 is supposedly putting something together so lets wait for that, really hope he comes through, there have been several people who have offered design help only to disappear after awhile
To make things easy I have excluded suggestions from people who have already won keys. Also i decided it to be more of a "draw" rather than an arbitrary choice by me, so the winner will be randomed from these shortlisted people, so basically they get to enter "2 draws" for offering the top suggestions.
The post numbers appear at the top right of each post.
These are post numbers excluded from the drawing. If the random number lands here Eddie will just click on "Randomize" again.
1,5, 61 (me)
2, 12, 28,29,32,47,59 (staff who already won)
9, 19, 23, 24(close so allowed),32, 43, 44,48 (less than 50 posts)
51 (already won a d3 key thru the blog contest)
60 (double post)
