Your Rig?

So i noticed there is a thread for gaming gear, and i went back to page 5 of the threads to check for a thread on rigs.

I'm curious, what rig is everyone running? I'm sure there are some guys out there in the community that could blow us away with their state of the art water-cooled systems that only make the rest of us jealous. Post it here, i want to know .

I'm going to upgrade this week (bear in mind i'm a poor uni student), into this;

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k + CoolerMaster Hyper TX3
Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V-LX
Ram: 16gb DDR3
GFX: Two ATI AMD HD6850
Case: NZXT Lexa S

That's not too shabby for a poor uni student . I will be upgrading in the near future. After a lot of speculation towards the topic, I have decided that I will be building my own computer with the help of a computer company nearby, so I will post the specs of my new rig when it is all decided upon

Yea i never buy them from the shops. I buy all the parts myself and build it. Almost $400-500 cheaper.

GFX: 2x Gigabyte GTX-460 (1GB)
CPU: Intel Core i7 950 (3.06Ghz)
Memory: 6GB Corsair DDR3
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
PSU: Corsair HX-750

Yeah, they don't seemed to have dropped much in price surprisingly. I only paid $215 each for mine last September. Probably not worth buying any more when the 560's are sitting pretty close in price these days.

Mine's starting to feel it's age. Built it a couple of years ago.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Q6600
GPU: nVidia 8800 GT
Memory: 2 GB DDR2

Can't remember any of the other specifics off the top of my head. Looking at the games coming out these days though, and it just barely hits the minimum requirements.

I'm hoping to upgrade sometime in the next couple of months, if I can justify the cost.

That post is from September last year... made on the same computer this post is. I guess a couple of months is more than 12.

I have a crappy HP Dv7 3007-TX or something like that. If I remember it has:

Quad core i7 that runs like it is an i-3000
4GB RAM that is useless as 32 bit only uses 2GB
17.4inch screen
Win7
Some nVidia GPU

It is so terrible :'( trying to save up for a better rig, will probably have the money in four years.

32bit OSes do not only use 2GB of ram... :/
It can address up to 2^32 Bytes (4,294,967,296) which is exactly 4GB. It's just that since most computers also have a graphics card with memory that is addressed the same way, you will only see your 4GB minus whatever the graphics used.

I know that SP3 of XP actuallly changed the way windows adresses memory so it will actually see the entire 4GB, so I assume this found its way into Win7 too.

My own rig:
AMDx6 1050T CPU.
ATI 5870 GPU.
4GB Ram
120GB SSD.
Fractal Design Define R3 case.

My question would be why would you run x86 Windows 7? You wouldn't be getting the most out of your hardware. There are enough 64-bit drivers around very everything you'd need. I don't see the downside to running 64-bit over 32-bit...

A thousand times yes if you like memory.

With 32-bit Windows, you're stuck at 4GB of RAM, and even then, you're only using about 3.3GB of it, give or take. With 64-bit, 4GB of RAM is the new minimum standard, and with 4GB, you can run tons of applications with zero slowdown. Windows 7 (and Vista for that matter) runs so beautifully with 4GB of RAM you'll wonder how you ever did with less. It makes your system more futureproof too, so you can take your system to 8GB, 32GB or even a terabyte, before too long.

Ps. MY RIG!

Yep! 4 x 6GB Kingston Hyper X sticks!

A modest amount I know, but hey I like memory.

8 times 4 is 32 brah. I think they were about 60 bucks for a kit, was a while back though I built this rig about 6 months ago and forgot most of the prices. I bought all my stuff from MSY. So cheap and so stocked.

yes. with x86(32bit) all you're going to see is 4GB max
with x64 4Gb is the minimum standard. Runs a little better.
Majority of applications and hardware can run on x64

I would still say that unless you are planning to get >4GB RAM then you would want it. And 4GB isn't really minimum, more like the standard amount to get. I used to run off 2GB for about 6 months and didn't give me much trouble though I wasn't the type of guy to run 20 taxing processes at once so that kinda helped. Also during that time I was just running on 32-bit XP.

My rig is a bit embarassing for a gaming rig but hey, it does the job for the moment until I can get some cash together for a proper gaming rig.

Macbook Pro 13"
Razer Black Widow Keyboard
Razer Death Adder Mouse

and that's about it. Pretty dodge I know, I have the Macbook Pro for my music business and it just does the job of running starcraft 2. Eventually I will be building my own rig for when I start getting a bit more serious.

I must say though, both the Black Widow and Death Adder are amazingly awesome

Ok I had to do a core system rebuild last year because the mother board died and took with it the cpu and ram it was kinda scary it melted the cpu to the socket pins haha.

Any way as follows:
CPU = i5 2500
Ram = 8 gig
Video Card = GTX275 (want to replace this as it won't properly support dvi monitors for some reason Gigabyte/Asus clash)
HDD = about 5tb of hdd space
Case = Old version of the Cooler Master Cosmos S pro

If you're running 32bit at the moment, I doubt you'd see vast improvements from upgrading your OS. I think the main benefit to 64bit as far as gaming is concerned is that it gets you past the 4GB (or whatever it is) RAM barrier.

This is the major benefit from x64. As a 32 bit system, 4gb is all you get. 4gb Ram is now becoming the low end of the scale, and you're probably going to need 8-12gb soon to run games like Battlefield 3 and MW3.

To the person who posted the question, upgrade if you can to 64 bit.

RAM has very little to do with running games, so I don't know what your on about. The only reason you would need more then say.. 3-4GB RAM is if you have 100 unnecessary programs running. I'm running off of 2GB RAM and I can have chrome open, itunes playing, sc2 open, msn, and a whole lot of other junk and I don't even surpass my memory capacity. I mean, maybe its 'cus I learnt to be efficient - I've been gaming on a 1GB RAM comp for a few years before upgrading to 2GB.

Dunno about hundreds of unnecessary programs, but with all my gears drivers running, steam, skype, Virus Scan software and daemon tools all running, not to mention windows 7's numerous background programs that they automatically run, I need more RAM. I think if you look at your processes tab in windows task manager, you'll see what i mean. Currently i'm at 79 different processes running. I'm sure that's a little excessive. But 40-50 is common. However you do have a point, if you have nothing on your computer in the way of extra programs running then you should be fine.

Also, RAM does affect games. Different programs access different amounts of the RAM at any one point in time. Thus the more RAM you have, the higher amount of RAM your game can access. Similarly, The CPU processes through either your Hard Drive, or your RAM. RAM is dozens of times faster than your Hard Drive, so the more ram you have, the faster your CPU can run programs. So while it is not necessary to have lots of RAM, if you ever experience long ass loading times, or a bit of lag in a game when you move from one section to another, that would be because you dont have enough RAM.

Dude thanks! Im looking at building my own/first rig by purchasing components fortnightly and I dropped into the MSY store in fyshwick (industrial area) but wasn't going to go back there cause I could see no price tags and assumed it was to expensive.

The rig I plan on building is basically the high end gaming build from build-gaming-computers.com/with alterations to suit my budget (feel free to criticise as it may help me make the right choices but im certain on the asus sabertooth p67 motherboard).

At the moment I'm using an asus notebook N61Jq series:
Intel i7 Q720 @ 1.6ghz (2.8ghz turbo mode)
4g ram (2x 2g sticks that I want to upgrade)
500gb seagate hdd 5400rpm
ATI radeon hd 5730
Windows 7, 64x bit
Sc2 razer peripherals: spectre, marauder and banshee (I place the marauder keyboard on top of the built in keyboard :P)

It used to run and still can at times, sc2 on ultra settings. ($1299 off eBay)

I want to get a ssd to replace the hdd in my current laptop but will probably just get one and put it in the laptop until the tower is ready for it.

MSY are -the- cheapest place in Aus... unless your budget is pushing $2K that motherboard will eat too much into upgrading something else, imo.

I like the whirlpool knowledge base for really good budget gaming builds (http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_...ming_configs_1)

Dunno about *the* cheapest. I know of a shop in my area, only a local store, but still. [url=www.netplus.com.au[url] has cheaper prices on all the parts, such as motherboard and cpu's.

But it looks like in terms of coverage and price, MSY are definitely brilliant.

x3 WD VelociRaptor 600gb (raid 0)
i7920 - 4.6ghz

x2 580gtx 3GB

I'm aiming for a similar Rig and say that my 1yo daughter has 2 weeks of attention left before i have enough money to start building said rig :P
(its impossible to neglect her so i basicaly only play sc2 when shes asleep or on my lunch break at work. laptop FTW!)

My PC can surprisingly run games still
Cpu: Intel e4400 Dual core
GPU: Leadtek 8800GT borrowed from a friend as my previous card died
Ram: 4GB DDR2 (2GBs are borrowed from said friend)
1x 1TB HDD 1x 500GB HDD
1x Viewsonic 24" monitor (my brother has killed a couple of pixels in it by firing a glove gun inside)
1x ASI 17" monitor

By no means a beast, best thing about it is all the storage space and the dual monitors.

My desktop is pretty much this but NVIDIA 560ti cards instead. Might update them soon.
Also I have an nzxt phantom. Probably overkill on the case
And I just purchased an msi gt780dx for lans.

COMPUTERS COMPUTERS COMPUTERS!!

Now that that's out of the way, let's all flex our computer muscles and get comparing!
What kind of rigs are people sporting? Also which peripherals? Who has the biggest computer out of the sc2sea community?
We'll find out, I suppose. Please post about your rigs specs, and why you chose your specific components!

The guys above rip my rig because I'm an AMD fanboy :P

Recently upgraded my CPU and MB

FX-8320 8core @ 4.5GhZ
32GB (8X4) Kingston HyperX
ASUS AMD 6970 2GB (OEM)
Samsung 830 SATA3 128GB SSD
WD Blue 1TB
Silverstone Raven RV02
Silverstone ST75F 80Plus Silver

peripherals:
Leopold FC500R Blue Switches + Ozone Xenon

I mainly use it for Hyper-V to create virtual machines for Windows Server to practice for my Microsoft certificates etc xD 32GB ram cost me under $200 since ram is dirt cheap nowadays

Case: CM Storm Trooper - It looked nice
CPU: Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme
CPU Cooling: Custom Watercooling (Primochill tubing, Bitspower fittings, XSPC waterblocks and radiator) - Found suitable parts to fit my system, Primochill tubing is a must, can be coloured if necessary, Bitspower fittings and rotaries are probably the best on the market, and XSPC have great waterblocks for CPUs and GPUs, as well as a wide range of radiators that fit on any case.
Mobo: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme - Great for overclocking, also looks nice.
RAM: 16GB 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance - Always been a fan of Corsair RAM
VGA: ASUS HD7970 x2 - Looking to upgrade to 2x GTX 690s in the near future, but for now the 7970s will do
PSU: Silverstone 1500W - One can never have too much power
HDD: 4x WD 2TB Caviar Black in Raid0 - 4 Caviar Blacks in Raid0 striping provides great read/write speed
SSD: 2x OCZ 256GB Vertex 4 - Always been a fan of OCZ SSDs, V4 are nice SSDs, provide great read speeds for those huge programs
Other: Blackmagic Intensity Pro - Streaming and recording of Xbox 360
Display: 4x ACER 24" G245 - Why not
Headset: Astro A40 + Mixamp - Primarily for console gaming
Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Ultimate - Decent keyboard, looking to switch to other brands such as Filco
Mouse: Razer Mamba 4G - Great mouse
Pad: Razer Vespula - Has a wrist rest, great for long session gaming

I'll see if I can find some photos

You can only overclock if it's a K-Unlocked Processor like 3770K, 3570K, 2500K 2600K...etc.
Stuff like a normal 2500, 2600, 3470, 3570, 3770 NON-K processors Cannot be overclocked.

Abit wasted if you have an overclocking Motherboard but you don't have an unlocked processor.

Oops (slacked out on a bit of research there), doesn't bother me that much as wouldn't be able to uitilise it. At least it has the ability to turbo to 3.9 if i ever do need a little more.

The 3770 has a turbo boost function if it's enabled in BIOS to clock it up to 3.9 GHz when under heavy load. You can, however, adjust the BCLK which might get you an extra 100 MHz onto your clock speed.

yea, you could. However, it may mean overclocking your RAM as well. So do be careful.

Yeah, the BCLK affects pretty much all of your busses, from RAM to PCIE, be super careful touching it as you can potentially fry components very easily.

Oh, and for the record:
CPU : Intel 2500k OC to 4.0ghz
GPU: HD6870 ASUS Overclock Edition
RAM: 2x4GB G.Skill 1600MHz
Motherboard: Asrock Z68 Extreme Gen3
Case: Thermaltake Black Dokker (stupid name, but had the clearance and fan slots that I wanted for under $70)
PSU: Old 600w passed down from my old PC, cant remember what brand it is off the top of my head.
Peripherals: Razer Deathadder V2, CMStorm Quickfire Rapid (Black Switch Edition) Mechanical Keyboard, Steelseries Oversized Mousepad/White-Ra Special Tactics mousepad (for home and travel respectively), Microsoft LX-3000 Lifechat Headset (Cheapest Headset with decent levels of comfort and microphone quality i've found).

What needs work:
Buying + Installing a non-stock cooler (looking at the hyper 212+, any recommendations at bang for your buck currently in Melbourne?)
Upgrading RAM to 16GB
Cable Management System (Dear god is it a mess in there, probably need to get a new PSU to do so, as the current one is reasonably old now and the cables dont quite reach as far as i would like)
Getting two 120mm case fans to finish off my fan complement

The Bang for the buck normally is the Hyper 212 (EVO, Plus...etc) like what I'm using right now. It's a big step up from a stock cooler from Intel which sucks... My stock cooler is already damaged after a year in use.

Built this little thing last week: my slightly tall shoebox of joy. A bootbox perhaps.

Silverstone SG06 (came with SF45 PSU).
Gigabyte Z77N-Wifi
i5 3570k, stock cooler
8GB ram (640K may not be enough for everyone but I'll be damned if 8G isn't enough for me)
Galaxy GTX670 2GB (reference design because the ones with decent coolers are too long to fit)
120GB Intel 330 SSD
1TB WD Green 3.5" HDD (from previous PC)

Was a fun build, my tetris prowess came in handy getting the video card in the case. The manufacturer says it only takes 9" cards but some random guy on the internet said 10"ers fit, and we all know to always trust the internet. Turned out well - there's even a good cm of free space once you actually find the correct path to lever it in.

Cabling is a complete mess but meh, airflow seems good enough for stock speeds.

SSD: 256gb Crucial M4 SSD (I have a 64gb Crucial M4 connected too but I dont use it)

My old headset broke, and my parents got me a pair of beats from China because they heard I didn't have a headset anymore. So nice. I should be getting a Razer Megladon in the mail sometime this week so that will be my actual headset moving forward.
