Honestly (and I know it's not your fault) $30 is at the steep end for the more casual guys who go along with no real intention of doing well, just for the social side of it.
I was even undecided whether it was worth it for that much more than a normal Sydney lan before I realised the dates meant I was interstate...
I can't really say whether this is what kept the turnout so low (the last CH lan was smaller than the previous ones too... it could just be that sc2 is losing it's attraction to the casual crowd).

I think Diablo 3 was the biggest factor in this case, but I agree the cost can't be ignored. There are a lot of people who are just in hiatus at the moment.
