[SEACL]SEACL #2 Tier 5 SEA League 2 Play-offs Writeup!
SEACL #2 is beginning to reach an end and I am sure everyone has been following their favourite tiers. But my question is, have you been following Tier 5? If you haven’t here’s a little rundown on how things went:-
The format of the play-offs is Double Elimination-esque with each match having 5 games. Each game is worth 1 point and is a best of three rounds. Can you say, “Lots of volatile action” faster than “Volition write up now!”
With this week as Week 1, we see Zerocraft to duke it out with the Perth Penguins in Match A and in Match B we see Mixed Lollies trying to keep QED’s dream of a date with destiny versus the sudden surge of confidence and power of ’s ToRMentors.
have a bye this week as they sit on the top of the table (as you all can see) and will face off with the winner of Match A, which either of whom TA Edarus and Friends are looking forward to settling some scores from earlier this season.
This week is important for the four teams playing. For those playing in Match A, whoever wins has to go up against the team from who were undefeated till last week in Match C. The loser of Match A will have to versus the winner of Match B. But Match B is going to be where all the action will be cause both teams have everything to lose! Losing in this match means their run to glory has come to an end. So, be sure to keep an eye on this match cause it’s the one to watch this week!
And what better way to greet such high pace action week ahead of us than with interviews from the team captains of those teams in the play-offs and of those who didn’t make it as well as the admins of Tier 5?
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
I couldn't be happier about my clan’s position. We started off as a lowly BSG team with less than exciting performances. And now, as we begin to finish the season, we have an incredibly strong position, our players are improving and continuing to climb the ladder (not many s, s or s left) and we just got our first masters player the other day who began in . QED is an ever-growing clan that strive to be the best and we intend on being the best the SEA community has to offer.
Do you think it could have been better?
While there were a few hiccups and bumps along the way, I feel we still did an amazing job getting to where we are now. Giving Krrn his manager role and aquiring the hand of other clanmates to assume the manager role on nights I couldn't attend really opened their eyes on what is involved in managing and captaining in these tournaments which was good personal growth for them as they understand what it means now to say you will make the commitment to play or to enter the tounament and to actually be true to those commitments. I wouldn't take back any of it.
A lot of people assume T5 is about improving for the BSG players within the league. Do you think that is true?
On a whole, yes. T5 or as previous the BSG Clan League, is an excellent gateway into the world of competitive Starcraft 2. It is essential to better yourself, meet amazing people, join a clan, and to just generally have fun while developing your skills as a player. While improving is not the sole purpose of T5, it is a huge part of it.
Would you say your clan/team’s roster of players have improved over the season?
Exponentially. My players are getting faster, stronger and continuing to grow at a rate that will hopefully lead us all into higher tier play. Some noteworthy improvement would be that of UpWaiting, ReverseCure and DeNile. UpWaiting just continues to get better every week. At the start of SEAL T5 S2 he was , and has since powered his way through to with ease.
ReverseCure is just sitting on the edge of with his amazing ZvP play and his ability to take out pylons and forward pylons continues to blow my mind (I lost 4 probes last night just trying to put down my forward pylon for my initial aggression -_-. DeNile had a bit of a rough season. Hitting full tilt, losing games, being demoted and just generally losing faith in his play.
But since then DeNile has POWERED through ladder ,getting back into gold inside of a week and now facing annihilating players in what I’m assuming is to be a promotion in the not too distant future
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
The top 5 was a complete upset towards the end. Zerocraft, the underdogs, powering through the final weeks to solidify their position in the Top 5 and the first team to take down for this season. Zerocraft have performed amazing this season and their players have continued to grow. Perth Penguins have also showed that an underdog team can make it to the playoffs with determination and hard work, who also guaranteed their spot in the Top 5.
Which clan/team do you think show true performance throughout the season?
Zerocraft for sure. Amazing clan, amazing people, amazing captain, and just overall performed extraordinary in the final weeks of Season 2.
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
The most exciting week was facing for the first time. In fear of being dethroned as undefeated, we were all nervous about the results and practiced hard for it, only to be taken down by an amazing team. Now we face a similar fate as we will be playing for the first week of playoffs and the loser is knocked out of the tournament for this season. Nerves will be high.
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
I'm not sure if we had a torturing week. Each week and the opponents that followed were a unique challenge that we were more than prepared to tackle. We loved every week.
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
I would absolutely love Zerocraft to take this in an upset to perhaps take out for a second time in the finals. Would make for some epic gameplay .
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
QED hands down. But if I had to choose other than us, I feel Zerocraft will take it in a close series finals.
QED fielded two teams for T5 this season. Was it because alot of players wanted to play?
Before the season started, we got an overabundance of applications to our clan who all wanted to play. Originally I created a BSG team and an All Platinum in hopes of the team being placed into T4 but this was not the case, so I mixed the players up and submitted 2 T5 teams. In hindsight, a single team would have been a lot more efficient in the long run.
The sister team, Krrn and Co Pty Ltd missed play-offs by 1 point. How do you feel?
While this is a little upsetting, QED as a whole are still in the playoffs and still going strong. While the Krrn and Co players would be a little disappointed, this feeling is quickly removed as QED as a clan are still going.
How would you have felt if Krrn and Co Pty Ltd made it to play-offs and you had to play them, especially with the 1st position in question?
This result couldn't have made me happier. While I feel Krrn and Co would have taken it (my PvP suuuuuuuuuucks lol) it would have madefor and epic series of games.
How do you think you’ll fare versus the ToRmentors who made such a blitzkrieg for play-offs mid-season?
I feel confident in our abilities and I feel we will be the victors in this series. Best of luck to and may the best clan win
Any last words before play-offs?
I just wanted to thank all the clans and players that made this possible, the admins who put up with our shit every week (), and my team who has helped me along the way and have not let me down as a whole. As long as we continue to improve and win, you will see us next season. And we will be stronger than ever.
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
Great - Personally I think we could have taken at least one of the draws to give us a better margin over ZeroCraft - but I'm happy with the end result.
Do you think it could have been better?
Of course - I believe TA has performed exceptionally and usually risen to the challenge while still giving the majority of our team a chance to play. However I feel we underperformed against Zerocraft and sent out the wrong line up against them.
A lot of people assume T5 is about improving for the BSG players within the league. Do you think that is true?
Definitely - with my time in the 'Clanless' team I saw players improve fromi Bronze to with the practice they got in a team environment. I've also, as an admin of the league this season seen alot of improvement in many of the teams.
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
Perth Penguins were always an unknown team for me - so I had no expectations from them, however they have shown me that they are a serious challenger for the league. Other than that I expected much of the results excluding TCP's performance. If they need to knuckle down and practice hard for next season they definitely have the talent to win this league.
Which clan/team do you think received the biggest upset throughout the season?
TA losing to Zero Craft. I think TA has the stronger line up and much better depth of players - we just didn't get the right match ups or send the right line up. Other than that, definitely underperformed this season, but I expect them to challenge again next season and are still a league favourite for me.
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
The final week…all the drama for TA v ZC the draw in the overall table and TA scraping through the tie breaker with 1 Bo3 win over ZC - PHEW!!!
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
Again, losing to ZeroCraft or losing a won game vs QED are very painful.
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
ToR have made a great come back to get into the playoffs and think they are the underdogs that will show some surprising results!
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
Of the players that have improved and gone up a rank or two in leagues, what do you think will become of them?
Well those that are still BSG level - I hope we see you back here next season. All our new found gosu's in Platinum and Diamond - I believe the Tier 4 tournament will be altered to include only & league players. So good luck and I'll see you in one day! ^_^
As the Admin and the half of the MaynMann combo, how has the season treated you?
With a 95%-5% workload split between Maynarde and I, I'm sure Maynarde will need a rest from his weekly posts of "Yo, casting some other more important people, talk to chad if you have any problems" . In all seriousness it is alot of work but I've loved it! . Other than that it has been a fun and enjoyable season, I hope my contribution has helped your experience be fun and enjoyable with a fair and balanced league for everyone!
You mentioned two tournaments in the works for after T5. Care to shed a lil more light to what we glimmered from your post?
Yeah we are still in the development stage of a few extra tournaments. However I can tell you that there will be a 'Tier 5 Team MVP tournament' Just a 16 player invitational for the top performers of Tier 5. Most likely 1 representative from each team and 5 other invites selected by Maynarde and I - but more details soon! The other tournament on the way, isn't Tier 5 related but something that I am working to bring to BSG and PD level players. That being, BSG and PD level tournaments with prizes Sponsored by team Carnage, Including coaching with the Carnage team and maybe after getting the 'edge' (pun intended) from coaching - we can also help a few get some imba gear with some Razer products.
T5 aside, all the other leagues have more or less finished. Were the results what you had expected?
I think I did well guessing the results for most weeks - however I only closely followed Tier 5 and Tier 1 tournaments - which mostly ended how I expected them too
Who do you think TA will face in Week 2 of play-offs?
It could go either way between Perth Penguins and Zero Craft - but I'd like to get a rematch against Zerocraft, then again in the finals, so in a Bo3 we can win 2-1
Any last words before play-offs?
Thanks so much to each and everyone of you. This league has been alot of fun - if you have any suggestions or would like to give me any feedback please, feel free to PM me! Other than that, just a shout out to TA, Razer and team Carnage
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
Considering the strength of all the teams above us, I think it's a decent finish. I was hopeful of a good finish at the start of the season, though towards the end I was focusing more on the improvement of the players as that's what matters most.
Do you think it could have been better?
There were a few weeks in there that if we'd been able to finish the 2-1's in our favour instead of our opponent's we could have taken the overall win. Had we been able to close out those series we definitely would have had a better finish.
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
With Zerocraft being the unknown entity at the beginning of the season I wasn't sure how they'd go, but the other 4 I had a good feeling they'd go strongly with their line-ups.
Which clan/team do you think received the biggest upset throughout the season?
First TA taking out the 6-0 vs the pre-season favourites TCP. When TA hadn't really been talked about for finals contention too much at the beginning, they really announced their intentions with a 6-0 spanking that led them in to an awesome season.
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
Our win vs Fusion Slugs was our most exciting time throughout the season as it was our first win for the season and created the potential for some momentum around the middle of the season, which we unfortunately didn't capitalise on.
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
The 3 week run where we had to play Zerocraft, Perth Penguins and TA in a row looked pretty intimidating coming in to it but I think we handled it pretty well, even though we came out 0-3. We put in a good fight in each game though. The 5-1 battering in the early rounds by ToR was not a good feeling.
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
I think Mixed Lollies. Though ToR come in to the finals in 5th place, they have had a strong run in the lead-up while Mixed Lollies have fallen away a little, and with their leader benched, it could be a tough time.
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
TA in my opinion. I think the loss to Zerocraft in the final week was the best thing that could have happened to them, as if they meet again they'll be hungry for revenge and I don't think they'll be stopped.
Would you say your clan/team’s roster of players have improved over the season?
Definitely. A couple of our players have promoted to platinum and will be placed up in to T4 for the next edition of SEACL, and most of our other players have had a promotion. I'm personally hoping to make it back to gold after a season in silver from not playing enough.
A lot of people assume T5 is about improving for the BSG players within the league. Do you think that is true?
I think it's the most important thing for the players to be improving, though nobody can deny that winning is always nice, and it'll be good to see the competitive side come out in force during the play-offs.
Ok, seriously. What does VB mean?
Haha, I never really explain it well, but when the leaders left their AoM clan and decided to make their own, someone suggested that VB from the beer Victoria Bitter would be a cool tag. So while we're named after VB, we're not called Victoria Bitter Clan, nor does VB really stand for anything. (Though the members have come up with a few interesting ones)
VB started off on a really shaky start and just narrowly avoided the ‘Spoon’.
Yeah there were a few games we came close to draws and wins but weren't able to win the pressure matches which meant we stayed low on the table. Late in the season we started having results our way a little, and picked up a win and a draw to keep us safe.
If you guys had made it to play-off, which team do you think you’d have the most trouble with?
Any of the Top 3. They're just so strong in their line-ups and have awesome player planning.
Anything special you wanna say, seeing as the next time we probably see VB is during the tournaments the MaynMann is planning?
Hopefully we can cause some upsets in those tournaments and finally get more than 2 wins in a season!
Any last words before play-offs?
Good luck to the 5 teams playing! Will be good to be able to kick back and enjoy some good Tier 5 play-offs action
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
Considering our slow start to the season I think we've done pretty well. We haven't lost a game in the past 6 weeks and won our last two with a big 6-0. So I'm feeling pretty confident going into the playoffs.
Do you think it could have been better?
In the first 4 weeks we versused , Krrn and Co and Perth Penguins. That was pretty rough for us considering we were a ZERO team at that point and all of those teams had players. So given the situation I think we did the best with what we were given.
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
To be completely honest, it's exactly what I expected. The other 4 teams have been top 5 all season and haven't been in threat of dropping out for most of it as well. Then there's us, . I knew we had a good shot of getting top 5 and we managed to do exactly what was needed to get there.
Which clan/team do you think received the biggest upset throughout the season?
I think the biggest upset was Fusion Slugs vs Mixed Lollies. Fusion Slugs who were at one point in contention for the ‘Spoon’ managed to beat a team that was vying for top position. That's pretty damn impressive.
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
I think the most exciting week for us was when we beat Mixed Lollies. At that point we hadn't really shown too much strength as a team and we were struggling to put some points on the board. Going up against the league leaders at the time was a little nerve wracking. However as soon as we managed to secure that 4th point I knew we had a shot at getting Top 5 and decided to put in 100% effort to get there. So that felt pretty good.
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
There were a couple of tough weeks for us. I think that the match versus was pretty torturing as we came one game from taking out TA and managed to lose it in a close match. It was pretty frustrating but still, simply the fact that we pushed one of the top teams to the brink that early in the season was heartening.
Another tough week was waiting for the results from Krrn and Co versus TCP. Despite the fact that we weren't even playing the wait was torturous just because our hopes for Top 5 rested on 's shoulders. [/color]
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
I think it would probably still be us. We managed to just slip in at 5th place and all of the other teams are miles ahead on points. All of the other teams have proven themselves every week while we're just coming strong late in the season. Having said that we plan to prove ourselves all the way to the victory in the grand finals!
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
of course, do you even need to ask?
Would you say your clan/team’s roster of players have improved over the season?
Definitely! We went from having zero s to now having 5. We have 2 s left in our active roster and zero with the rest being a mixture of /. That is a huge change from the start of the season.
Of the players that have improved and gone up a rank or two in leagues, what do you think will become of them?
I'm fairly certain that everyone is going to keep improving and we'll see a lot more / ToR players in the near future.
Not a question. Just wanted to say thanks for letting us all have this opportunity to come together as a community (and clans) to play in SEACL. I’m sure everyone feels the same way
^_^
You took over the helm for the ToRmentors around midway the season when ToRZanderax had to commit to real world issues. Was it difficult to do so?
I think the first week I kind of floundered a little just trying to figure out what i need to do and how to do it properly (not to mention having my SC2 decide to not log in that night as well). After that though everything has managed to run smoothly and I don't think we've lost a match since.
And recently you’ve been appointed as T5 Captain by the clan leader Spartaz. Currently you’re in league. Do you foresee any issues in your captaincy in the future?
I'm not sure how I'll go captaining the team without being in the same Division as them but I'm willing to give it a shot and I think I know the players pretty well and where they're all at with their skill level so I'm hoping I'll be able to keep doing a good job.
A rematch of Week 7, which the ToRmentors won 4-2, do you think you and your teammates, bolstered by the fact you guys made an huge sudden surge for the Top 5 position mid-season, can take the win this time around?
I'm going into it feeling very confident. I know this T5 team is stronger than it's ever been and we're feeling ready for whatever throws at us!
Any last words before play-offs?
Just a huge thank you to all of the T5 ToR players. When every week I'm hearing about other teams barely able to fill their lineups and I have to choose between a dozen players I know I’ve been spoilt by you guys haha. It's great to be able to send out that PM and know that I'll be able to field a strong lineup every week. I'd also like to thank Chad and Maynarde for keeping this the best run division in the league. You guys have done a great job and I don't think any T5 player can say otherwise.
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
We're all pretty happy with our result, we finished the season tied in 1st place, and were regulated to 2nd based off the 4th tie breaker rule, a little disappointed it didn't get down to the 6th tie breaker though T_T
Do you think it could have been better?
It could have gone better a win instead of a draw, etc. all in all we finished the season on top and beat the league favourite in the final week, can’t complain too much
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
Yeah they are the top 5 I would have picked at the start of the season, if you have asked me mid-season I don’t think I would’ve picked , they had an awesome turnaround on the back nine, GG boys.
Which clan/team do you think received the biggest upset throughout the season?
Fusion Slugs defeating QED Mixed Lollies, was the series for me awesome to see one of the little guys take a win off one of the tournament favourites ^_^ TCP defeating Perth Penguins was a close second!
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
Easily Week 11 versus basically a win meant we tied with for 1st a draw or a loss mean a win for TA (especially after Perth Penguins lost their series with (GG !). BetasSo played out of his skin and managed to take the Ace and Rythos took his series too which meant at worst we'd draw.
Bit of a drama when a couple people accused him of smurfing, but SEACL admins looked at the case and it went in our favor (seriously talk to the guy for 5 minutes, he is the most mannered person in ZC and thats saying something!).
Voliton was given an unlucky match up and couldn’t defeat the MiniBeast, Saturdays game (Spazz) secured us the win and Smoky lost 1-2 in a super tight series, probably the most exciting series of the season.
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
I’ve gotta say this week, Perth Penguins have a Barcraft this Thursday and this being the Easter weekend, rescheduling games has been an absolute nightmare, cannot wait for this week to be over! Lol
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
ToR would have to be the underdogs in this story, having won the least amount of games of the top 5 teams, however they seem to be improving every week so they are actually a serious contender for the title!
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
I think (and hope) it comes down to TA and Zerocraft, we finished the season dead even on Points (we did beat them in the process to achieve that feat however!). It’ll be a fitting end to the season and true decider to who the "top team" is, the oldest clan in the league versus the newest clan, definitely worth watching
Would you say your clan/team’s roster of players have improved over the season?
Yes definitely, over the course of the season we had 4 people promoted from to and 3 people promoted from to . Our tier 4 players have been really helpful, particularly in the last couple weeks, I predict our two most active s (BetasoO and Voliton) to be promoted to come season 7!
A lot of people assume T5 is about improving for the BSG players within the league. Do you think that is true?
Definitely, our clan wasn’t the only one to have multiple promotions, it was a common trend across the league, I find being part of a team as opposed to playing by yourself increases your motivation to improve.
So, what’s it like leading a bunch of players who went from, ‘We are from no clans! UNITE!’ to ‘We are Zerocraft. We are here now and here to stay’?
The guys were pretty much a clan before the season started, they just needed a name and needed new leaders with Chad departing for TA, At times it was difficult, I found we werent taken seriously because of the notion that we "werent a real clan" running the clan is super easy though, Voliton really helped me out in the beginning and Suman aka ZCPooSmear looked after everything Tier 4 related.
If I’m not mistaken, Zerocraft fielded two team for SEACL, one for T5 and another for T4, with a ranking of 6. I’m not so sure if a lot of T5 followers follow T4 so could you go into detail about the T4 team and their performance this whole week?
T4 did really well all things considering, they had a smaller roster than us and were really hurt by the fact that they soon found out they were playing teams of . They picked up a Masters themselves (nGenFlar) who worked hard and became our 1st ! most our s have since been promoted to .
The teams real issue was the difficulty of making game time (many of Tier 4s players are from the SEAsia part of SEA) and were walked over many times, I’m part of the admin team for SEACL Tier 3 and one of my initiatives is to reformat the league so it can be accommodating for all players involved (a difficult task considering the 5-6 hour time zone difference on our server)
A rematch of Week 9, where you tied with the Perth Penguins. Thoughts on the coming match?
Has been a pain in the butt to schedule, The Penguins have a Barcraft on Thursday and this weekend everyone has family stuff T_T but otherwise looking forward to it now that all seems to be solved last time, they won 3 sets last time to our two (we won the Ace so Match result was a draw) However they're coming off a loss and we're coming from a win, so hopefully the momentum is with us ^_^
How would you feel if you guys, say, beat the Perth Penguins and have the match vs TA for Week 2 of play-offs?
I wouldn’t mind vsing TA in Week 2, I think we've proven to everyone they're human , but in all seriousness, we'll just take it one week at a time, won’t be thinking about Week 2 until we know the result of Week 1 ^_^
Any last words before play-offs?
(He didn’t answer it in his reply! D: Arnor, fix this quickly¬ )
Nirvana and Frogmite and everyone else came up with a great format for a team league. My own clan (AsG) had enough members too scrape together 2 teams. I looked at all the clanless players in Perth and figured they should form a ish level team to enter.
I asked in the Perth Barcraft group if anyone was interested in playing in a team league every week and enough people signed up to make it happen I decided to call the team the Penguins because I like penguins and no one could stop me I hope the Penguins come back together to compete next season
How did you find out about SEACL #2 T5?
I was following the thread on forming a clan league very closely
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
Much better than what I had expected when we signed up. Honestly though I think the Penguins on a good day have what it takes too beat anyone in this league, so I’m pretty excited for the finals
Do you think it could have been better?
Definitely. Every round we lost or drew could have been a win if one game had gone the other way (except our final round, where we fell apart) we did well enough to get the double chance in the finals though which is great!
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
Pretty much. The Top 5 is basically how I thought it would look at the start of the season. I feel both QED teams underperformed and ZC performed better than I thought they would. I also expected fade to be much more of a threat.
Of course the predictions I made at the start of the season were based mostly on the leagues of the players in each team (which means little) and how much I liked each clan (which means less)
Things like organisation, availability and commitment to training all mean so much more in a team league like this, which you can't really judge at the start of the season very easily.
Which clan/team do you think received the biggest upset throughout the season?
Probably between us going down to in the final round or Mixed Lollies losing to ToR.
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
Week 4 against FaDe. After a shaky start to the season, Frisco and Moosable managed to barely scrape through with wins while our other 2 players got smashed. So everything came down to the ace match against Byrnsy; a fellow Perth-ian who we know is an awesome person/player... and unfortunately our ace player hadn't shown up.
It looked like we were going to have to forfeit since none of our other players were online, when Risym comes up on Facebook and I shove him into the lobby for map 1.
Even with him arriving at the last minute to save us, I was far from confident. For our most important game of the season we'd just replaced a high plat player with a low gold who'd been 2-0in a PvP the last time he played for us.
Of course, Risym came through for us (with a cannon rush!) and we all loved him for it
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
This week since we have weekly Barcrafts on Thursdays starting this week and all of us have to sort out reschedules or else it was to be either miss playing playoffs or Barcraft.
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
ToR got smashed when we played them early in the season. Well done to them for getting so far, but they're going to struggle to get any further.
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
Penguins will. We have the best A team, the most depth and the best leadership.
Wow, newcomers to sc2sea and already making a name for yourselves. What have you got to say for yourself?
The Penguins formed just for this team league to have some fun. I knew some of them before hand, but most of them I’ve met through the team. Everyone who signed up has turned out to have a great attitude and personality, and everyone's impressed me with the amount they've improved over the season. I hope my attempts at coaching have been helpful for at least some of them.
So, why Penguins?
I like penguins, what's wrong with that? (Nothing wrong, just asking )
So, you’re playing Zerocraft, the team that beat the undefeated (well, up till last week) TA as well as playing to a draw with you guys. Nervous?
A little. We have most of our 'A team' playing this week as well as Mikey making his debut for us. Hopefully the pressure doesn't get to him too badly in his first ever 'serious' match. Since we have a stronger team than we did when we drew with them, we should win easily this time.
If say, you do beat Zerocaft, you’ll be facing TA next. You guys drew with them as well. Thoughts?
We only managed scrape out a draw because M50 made some mistakes in the ZvZ ace match that MrCrow managed to capitalise on. Those mistakes won't happen again and even if they do the ace match isn't enough to save us this time. We look forward to the challenge
Any last words before play-offs?
Everyone in this league has been awesome and we've had a ton of fun. thanks for a great season! I hope all the teams unlucky enough to not make the playoffs are cheering for us to smash
Funny story actually, the three original members were sitting around in TeamSpeak and playing some team games when we all started shouting Hoorreeeblay. For some reason we thought "Let’s make a clan with that name Horriblë" and that's how we formed XD
How did you find out about SEACL #2 T5?
I was just surfing the forums and I saw it and thought it was a great opportunity to have some fun.
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
It's never great to finish last in anything but the great thing was we became a lot more competitive throughout the season and had some great fun doing so.
Do you think it could have been better?
Win the series that we drew or finished 4-2 in that went down to the last game, we had 3 draws which I think is equal most in the league.
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
Pretty much yeah, each team was quite strong in their five games against us.
Which clan/team do you think received the biggest upset throughout the season?
In week 7 I think ToRmentors got over Mixed Lollies when they were on top of the table, biggest upset in my opinion. Might have changed the whole competition.
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
Definitely the last week against VB with Security going for our first win of the season in our last game of the season.
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
Being 6-0 by Zerocraft with me being the only person to win a game was quite horreeeeblay.
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
The Mixed Lollies I think as they slipped under the radar of late.
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
Zerocraft
Ouch! The ‘Spoon’ D: Last place in the table must be a rough place to be.
It speaks for itself, no one wants to be last but looking at the competition from the beginning we started out pretty week but we could have done better than we did later in the competition.
Looking through the history, you guys managed to get a game or even a draw. Was there ever a time where you guys were so close to a win?
In our last series against VB the last game was delayed to Friday and we were up 3-2 I think mostly everyone in our clan watched that game and hoped security got over the line but wasn't to be.
If say, you made play-off, reaction and who do you think will be the biggest challenge?
I would been happy but I think if you make the playoff's that's all that matters, the season is over and the finals is all that matters. Who do people remember the players who finish on top of their group or ladder or the finals winner?!
Anything you want to say, since the next time we see HoH it’ll be during the tournaments planned by the MaynMann or next season?
I see the clan going in a good direction and with some new players joining we hopefully will be more of a force in the future.
Any last words before play-offs?
GL to all the teams, they are all great teams and any of them can win it and hope the next clan league is as great as this one. Cheers, Harbringers Of Horriblë.
The short answer is to play in the SEACL #2. The longer answer requires some background, which looking at the questions I might have to do so anyway! So basically the core of our team is workmates in a little games studio called 2K Australia. <Shameless Plug Time>
If you don't know who we are, well we worked on Tribes Vengeance, Freedom Force, SWAT 4 and all the BioShocks (including Infinite at the moment). Anyway we love Starcraft and we play together a lot, doing internal company tournaments and things like that.
But we had never played in an outside tournament. So we contacted some friends outside work and formed a team!
How did you find out about SEACL #2 T5?
The Team Liquid thread was the one which got our attention.
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
Surprised really...We saw the teams at the start and felt that most if not all were better than our line-up. But we knew we had a team which would turn up each week and fight hard, since we all knew each other well and could rely on one another. So we were hoping to steal some wins. So overall I am really happy, not just with the results, but with the attitude and commitment of my slugs.
Do you think it could have been better?
Not at all, if you had told me we would get 3 wins and a draw, I would have thought you were crazy!
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
Week 1, we had never played before; none of us had tournament experience. We didn’t know what to expect or how we would do. And we managed to pull off a shock draw against FaDe which really boosted our confidence! The three wins in a row was also huge, but the lead up to those games weren't as exciting as the first week. (Or nervous!)
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
The weeks after Week 1! We had some of the top teams in weeks 3 to 7 (we had the bye in Week 2), with games against TA, Perth Penguins, Zerocraft, QED Krn and VB. We were hoping to steal a draw in there, but we had 5 losses and we were starting to wonder if we had bitten off a bit more then we could chew. But we never gave up and last 4 weeks were our reward.
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
would have to be...They are an impressive team who we played in the last week and they won easily! I wouldn’t be surprised for them to get to the final. But all 5 teams have been impressive.
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
That's a really hard one. All the teams have been impressive. The top 4 have looked good all season long. ToR took some time to get going, but had a really hard ask early on. Now that their team has grown it will be a very close thing. If you look at the results of the top 5 against each other, TA only lost to Zerocraft, Zerocraft and Perth only to QED, QED lost to ToR and ToR lost to TA and Perth...
So it will be up to the performances on the night! I guess I need to pick a side. If QED win this week, I think they might pull it off, losing Fridge will hurt though. Otherwise I feel TA will bounce back against Zerocraft in the grand finals.
A lot of people assume T5 is about improving for the BSG players within the league. Do you think that is true?
Definitely, we didn’t join to win, we joined to have constant games with people our level, to have some way besides ladder to measure our level and to encourage us to practice harder and get better. That and we wanted to have a lot more fun! If you are a BSG player, join in the fun next season! You might even get to be a slug
Would you say your clan/team’s roster of players have improved over the season?
Yes, we really have. Myself and Bonik got from only just making to , we got Nevar to , and Zom and Sam to . And everyone is laddering heaps and starting to win more and more games on ladder and in practice.
Newcomers to sc2sea and already showing you are a force to be reckoned with when you guys get serious. What have you got to say for yourself?
Personally the most important thing for me is that my teammates are having fun and improving and that as a team we act professionally and politely. I'd be happy to collect the ‘Spoon’ every year but be seen as the nicest side out there. As long as we did all we could to avoid the spoon that is! My hope is that people who like our attitude and the way we go about things will either join us, or look to take us under their wing, like NaZ are doing.
So, why Slugs?
Ahh another longish story (Can you tell I enjoy writing!). A small team of us at 2K Australia, including myself were on the PS3 version of BioShock 1. We were in our own little area, working late hours trying to get the project done. So near the end a lot of your time is spent working with the same small group of people and we all got a long really well. So we decided we needed a team name. We choose Team Sea Slug. (The other choice was Team Cream apparently!).
As time went on, everyone kept hearing about this Team Sea Slug within the office and slowly more people became a part of it (We had our own mailing lists etc.). So it really stuck with us and we decided to use the name for our team. But we wanted to give it a Starcraft theme, so we choose Fusion Slugs. As an added bonus, if you ever check the credits for BioShock 1 PS3, or BioShock 2 on any platform, you should see dedications to Sea Slugs
You guys have lost in some weeks yet you managed to make them work for the win AND also managing a win over QED Mixed Lollies. Fiery determination and a never say die attitude I assume?
Yeah we really never felt like a match up was impossible. I think the first week result vs FaDe really instilled that into us. It doesn’t matter if you are a , taking on a . You can beat them. You just need to exploit their weakness and play to your own strengths. I also really tried hard to predict each lineup of the opposition and give some of our guys a shot at stealing matches. Some weeks that worked!
If say, you did get to play-offs what do you think would be the biggest obstacle to finals?
Every other team who made it! Our team has two ’s and one and we would be facing 1 , 2 s and 2 s each week. That’s a hard ask. Of course you never know what might happen and other teams sometimes struggled to get their best players turning up each week, which is something we never had a problem with. That was probably our best strength, everyone was willing and keen most weeks (besides some unforeseen circumstances for a couple players). I guess it’s hard to forget or not play, when we work together!
Any last words before play-offs?
This is probably epically long already. So to anyone who read this all, you're awesome! I want to put a huge thanks out to Maynarde and Chadmann for running a fantastic series. To the opposition captains and their players who I spoke to or played, thank you so very much for being helpful, patient and kind to us. We are so glad we are now part of this awesome community.
We will back, partner with NaZ next SEACL and you should see a lot more about us soon. We are getting our website ready and hope to add even more fun to the awesome BSGP atmosphere we have! Tier 5 fighting!
Looking at the league table, how do you feel about your clan/team‘s position?
Honestly, I went into this season with no clear idea of where TA would be on the ladder come the end of the season. In previous clan BSGs (BSGCLs) we've 'underperformed' as far as the name of the clan would suggest and I was hoping it was time for us to step up. Looking over our history and team line-up across those tournaments there’s been a 'core' of people like myself, Eaeron, Minimat, Bottles so I think that added the depth and experience in such a format which allowed us to outshine a lot of equally skilled teams.
That being said, I’m bloody proud of the results the boys (and 2 gals) gave and the determination they shared to be the best at the end of the season... After the first 3 weeks I knew we had the right stuff to be able to be a top contender this season. Big shout-out to the players for TA as I don't believe we suffered a single walk over (on our end) all season.
Do you think it could have been better?
Naturally! There were a few weeks where we were facing teams in the lower half of the league which you would expect go 5-1 or 6-0 which ended up coming down to close 4-2s. At the same time, two draws and a loss was a bit disheartening given the showing we had earlier, it killed our dominance and to be honest I was quite enjoying being the clear top. I think more than anything it came down to preparation.
Believe it or not, we barely practiced together! Having a line-up always consisting of and is a pain too, it makes us predictable and snipe-able, something we'll be fixing for future seasons and indeed the playoffs where possible.
A lot of people assume T5 is about improving for the BSG players within the league. Do you think that is true?
Over the course of the season we can see this to be true, given the rules changing to accommodate the growth of players into higher leagues. We initially started off as a "BSG" tier with some s thrown in, where now it’s a BSGP with some diamonds on top! I think it speaks to how the league is working to develop players and improve their skills, especially when it comes to tournament experience / pressure and a team environment.
Looking at the league table again, did you expect the clans/teams in the Top 5 to be the Top 5?
Zerocraft came into the season on the back of The Clanless from BSGCL Season 2 (who stomped, to be blunt) so they were always seen with the history of The Clanless as showing them to be a strong team. However, most of the original team is gone now to higher places so I saw Zerocraft as a bit of an unknown. I was honestly shocked they'd come within a whisker of knocking us off in Week 11.
Other teams such as QED had monster teams on paper which for me was startling... TA always had a 'grudge' with QED since the BSGCLs as we had a habit of knocking eachother out of prelims or all-killing eachother. On paper, I expected them to top it. I'd say were the biggest let-down of the season for me as they went in as the competition favorites and Perth Penguins were a refreshing challenge to add to the mix. Other teams were touch-and-go as we know, looking at clans like , while they boast an experienced bunch of boozers
I always expected this to be their season to shine. All-in-all, the only teams I expected (as a certainty) to see in the top 5 were , Mixed Lollies, , and (based on team experience alone).
Which clan/team do you think received the biggest upset throughout the season?
TA! We were undefeated!!! But seriously, I’d have to put this one down to QED Mixed vs the Slugs. I just didn't see it coming!
Which week do you think was the most exciting for your clan/team?
Has to be week 11. "If you (Edarus) win then we win regardless! No, wait, it'll come down to the tie breakers... Ok you lost, now it’s down to Eaeron and we might win on Best of Threes. Such a nail-biter with shit-talking going on from both sides in the form of epic DBZ videos, the result ended in our favour but f*** me it was a close one! When Eaeron told me the result I literally breathed a sigh of relief.
Which week do you think was the most torturing for your clan/team?
When it comes to mentally for me it was Week 6. We had the bye then and QED Mixed Lollies became the first team (and only ) to overtake us in the season so it highlighted the pressure we were under - we weren't a clear first yet! As for physical its gotta be Week 11 again. Just a damned stressful week to wait for results to come in to know if we made it to the line with a gold or silver medal.
Which clan/team do you think is the underdog in the win play-offs?
ToR. The other four have been considered "top contenders" for the vast majority of the season where ToR has only just come into their own as a league leader. Looking at some of the match histories across the teams it seems TA will have our work cut out for us but as I stated earlier, that depth and experience we have will see us across the line so yeah, underdog for me is ToR.
Which clan/team do you think will win play-offs?
TA of course! But without the lovingly biased eyes of the captain and competitor i'll say this will be close. I still think we'll take it out though!
Would you say your clan/team’s roster of players have improved over the season?
In depth and knowledge it’s clearly a yes however there is still a lot of work to be done and a lot of room to improve. We can see also that a couple of players have experienced at least one promotion over the course of the season so I’d say in general it’s a yes to the improvement. Ignoring the obvious however, there’s been a heap of consolidation of skills with the players (for example Eaeron fixing some loose ends in his worst matchups making them his strongest) which is indeed a good showing.
Undefeated till last week. Thoughts?
We would have gotten away with it, if it wasn’t for those pesky kids! While other teams began to see us as 'unbeatable' I think we got that into our heads as well and it certainly came back to haunt us in the last two weeks. While Zerocraft have an impressive team we could have taken them down.
I guess it was also a good thing for the competition, as nobody likes to watch anything thats one-sided. It brought the competition as close as it could be and makes for interesting viewing and reading. Never fear, it won’t be happening again!
If Zerocraft does beat Perth Penguins, what then? Revenge? And if Perth Penguins win? You drew with them in Week 10. (Two questions combined to one)
Statistically speaking, 9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape and is no exception! Well, when I say gang rape and TA, I’m of course talking about humping ZC into submission with a phat 5-1 or 6-0 to re-assert our dominance. "Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up."
Who do you think TA will likely face in Week 2 of play-offs?
Zerocraft. Everybody wants to see that grudge go down and I’ll be cheering them on so we get the chance to take the fight back to them.
Any last words before play-offs?
Bacon, toaster, tomato! Wait, no... I take that last one back... I wanna keep that one for later. But again on a serious note; good luck to all the teams who made the cut for the playoffs and best of luck next time to those who didn't. It’s been a brilliant season with minimal dramas and issues as far as a new event goes for the more casual gamers in the BSG leagues and big thanks to Chadmann for being both an active and reliable player as well as admin-ing a majority share of the season.
Lastly, to QED and Zerocraft; We've had our ups and downs but I know we can still be friends…It’s just a shame we'll have to crush you on our path to victory!
And if you think that is all, you’re in for a big surprise! As the games for Play-offs are played this week, more interviews will come in. So, be sure to keep an eye for when this thread is updated and keep that eye of yours on the action of Tier 5 and all its and the slight dash of madness and shenanigans!
I am not gonna do a writeup this week, easter andmadness at work has prevented me. A team i really like for the finals is the Perth Penguins. Looking at these interviews, no-one is really rating the penguins - they want a ZC TA grand final to settle the grudge.
How the Penguins are flying under the radar
There was lots of drama in the final week - would QED Krrn or Co make it or ToR (and the in house QED results were questioned), and TA v ZC awesomeness. The only team that didnt attract attention were the Penguins. This team:-
1) drew with Zerocraft;
2) drew with TA (!);
3) ended 1 win below beign in a 3 way tie for first place.
How is this team not massively hyped? When the Penguins joined the comp, their team lineup was a little underwhelming - a few plats, but a good spread of players. I think in the predictions, they werent meant to finish any higher than middle of the pack. But here they are, with third spot on the ladder.
Brief Discussion on the format of the finals - do not finish fourth or fifth
SO the format of the finals makes it a little interesting. To make the Grand final:-
the team finishing first (TA) must win 1 match (with two losses before being knocked out);
teams finishing 2nd and 3rd must win 2 matches (with two loses before being knocked out); and
teams finishing 4th and 5th must win 3 mathes (any loss, and you are gone).
just due to the format, i cannot see 4th or 5th winning the entire compy. they need to go 3-0 to make the Grand final - and then need to win that match also. So it is a 4-0 proposition to win the comp, where any slip-up means they are out. Just too much. not impossible, but insanely hard
Grand final? This week sets up the whole playoffs
Therefore i think the grand final will be made up of the top three. So Penguins and ZC slug it out this week, in a match that will set up the rest of the playoffs. winner get a shot at making the grand final (if they can make it past TA) and loser gets to play winner of Mixed Lollies and ToR.
I have had a look at the lineups, and i dont think that Mixed Lollies without Fridge can beat that ToR team. The ToR team is just amazing on paper, and haven't been defeated in a fair while. I think that ToR should get through
But then they will need to slay about three more dragons to progress. The funny thing is that if a team in 4th or 5th does make it to the grand final, they are forced to play 3rd second and first (and not necessarily in that order). I just cant see ToR going the whole way - sure, they could beat one or ZC PP or TA, but all three?
The other game, ZC and Perth Penguins, should be good. The ace match being worth less is a benefit to ZC, as our lack of diamonds has been a factor for a while. having to win three of the 5 is the issue, i think that Perth Penguins have at least 2 games pretty much in the bag - so ZC needs to win the othe5r three, which is a tough ask
Predictions:-
ToR 4 - Qed 1
Perth Penguins 3 - ZC 2. this will be close, and while i hate backing against my team, the Penguins just have so much depth. I lost to Mr Crow when we last played, and i know how strong he is. Betasso will have his work cut out for him if he is going to bring home the gold.
Looks like i am doing a write-up. i really need more hobbies

Yeah and I might be casting with Suman (aka PooSmear)..(PooMann? - ChadSmear?)
also, just thought I'd give my predictions for this week
ZeroCraft v Perth Penguins:
I think ZC got some good match ups. Starting from the top, EvilSWAT v Frisco - Evil has learnt his protoss from Incognito and I, who are both solid PvZ so if Evil was listening in the hours of coaching he should be fine in this game. SmokyMcPot v mikey - while Smoky is coming off the back of some inactivity and is slow to pick up his former skill, I think his ZvT is still his best MU and if he can get his macro process sorted he will be in a good position for this match. Volition v head - both solid players, but I can see head taking this with the state of PvT... it should be in his favour (however I don't really know how each player perfoms in this MU). Spazz v Mooseable - Spazz's TvZ is really strong at times - if his early/mid game plans work well he should be a shoe in to take this match. Not knowing Mooseable's ZvT I see this match as being pivotal in determining the winner of this match up. BeTasoO v MrCrow - BeTasoO's PvZ is solid, if MrCrow can hold his agressive style he should be able to get himself into a good position in this match - however BeTasoO is in good form to take it out.
My Prediction: 3-2 to ZeroCraft.
QED v ToR Suipr v Reaper - established Gold vs just out of bronze. I think Suipr has this, I've played Suipr in PvZ before and he pushed my PvZ so I think he should be good for the win here. DeNile v BreadFan - very close game - hard to call without knowing the players skill in this MU. Again tho, I find PvT to be the easiest MU at this stage - with Terrans playing so predictably. So DeNile would be the favourite by the tiniest of margins. Also, this game could be a deciding factor in the match. enLighten v Maverick - Gold v Plat and Maverick's play has always impressed me. So Maverick to take this one. UpWaiting v Deathsfang - UpWaiting HWAITING.. This guy has had amazing TvZ with stacks of solid builds to pull out against DeathsFang - should be a very close game but I give it to UpWaiting 2-1. ReverseCure v EchoFive - I know ReverseCure is a solid established Plat player with Echo on his way up. I'd say ReverseCure with a 2-1 win. But I don't know enough about EchoFive to comment. Could also be the deciding game in this match!..
my prediction : 3-2 either way, however I'm leaning towards ToR.. slightly.
Head and I generally play early in the mornings (it is like 6am for me, he is still awake from the night before at like 4am), and we have a pretty balanced record against each other. Would you please elaborate about what you mean by the current state of TvP?
TvP is easily my worst matchup. I would rather play tvt all day than have to try to beat protoss. HTs, colo, sentries. no matter what you do, protoss can just have an answer. I am looking for any diamond to work with in this matchup - as i will not get to diamond while i am winning about 25% of my TvPs.

Since the ladder season has now been completed i've gone back and re-counted all the votes which were made through SEABets to see how the punters thought the ladder would look in the end.
The below shows total votes FOR the team with draw votes in brackets to the right (and not counted in the final standing).
As we can see the team people were most confident in when voting was TA, and TA also received the most votes across the weeks for victory over their opponents. Additionally TA only received ONE draw vote during the season which happened to be in week one against TCP. Lastly, TA were the only team to finish in the spot the voters expected them to. Dafaq?
The team which surprised people the most (by the votes) would undoubtedly be the Fusion Slugs, who finished a full four positions higher than punters expected. It speaks to the determination of the Slugs who went into the competition as an unknown and (on paper) didn't seem they'd shine as bright as they have.
Lastly, again "by the votes", Zerocraft take the cake when it comes to uncertainty boasting the highest draw votes in the competition. I think this one boils down to a combination of a mostly new line-up which came in off the back of The Clanless' success in BSGCL Season 2.
The rest of the ladder shows a movement of +/- 2 positions for most teams so i'd have to say the punters were pretty good at predicting the standings overall (teams stayed in the same "zones" as they were assumed to be in).
To me this is pretty interesting data, and i'd be keen to see what results the finals yield.
Good luck to the competitors and best of luck to those who missed out. Lets make it an awesome show guys and I look forward to next season.

Would you please elaborate about what you mean by the current state of TvP?
Terran's are so predictable in TvP - MMM into VG all day erry day. PvT for me is by far the easiest match up to understand and excel at - why I believe most Protoss have best PvT. The current state of the game is Terran need positioning to win in standard games and often play very predictable.

Add me, I'm happy to practice with you at anytime. While I'm only Plat, I've taken games off Diamond and Master Terrans in tournaments.

agreed. if I get a third up in a PvT, I know I have already won.
agreed. if I get a third up in a PvT, I know I have already won.
but what the hell should a terran be doing about this? we play predictable? because we can only get some units out of a rax/fact/starport. We cant build a templar archives and suddenly have 8 DTs or insane tech switches like that....
I am really interested to hear what terrans are doign that you guys are struggling with. That is more likely to help a terran like me.

TvP go mass marines, stim and 1a
TvT go mass marines, stim and 1a
TvZ go mass marines, stim and 1a. if they have banelings you can choose between splitting your marines or simply making more since marines are free
not even joking with that

i guess i need to learn how to play now...
enLighten v Maverick - Gold v Plat and Maverick's play has always impressed me. So Maverick to take this one.
I wouldnt discount enLighteN so quickly.... he is used to playing plats as he has only recently gone back to gold level from plat. Im thinking this game is going to be a toss of the coin... pardon the pun.
Yeah we are still in the development stage of a few extra tournaments.
Can't wait for this .
Great write up and interviews man, I can't wait for next week for TA's match. Really hoping that it isn't ZC, the only team I feel we can lose to. I think that it will be a TA vs ZC final and I think if ZC beats the Penguins, I feel that they will beat us and then meet us in the Grand Final after we crush third week opponent. If Penguins win I can only see a easy walk to the finals, but I could definitely eat these words haha.
