Basically, I thought we could start an apprentice programme.
Something where some of the higher level players in the clan, could take a lower level player of the same race, under their wing.
It wouldn't have to be as formal as coaching, where you sit for an hour and teach. I am thinking more along the lines of a buddy system.
Here are some ideas:
- The apprentice could send replays to the Mentor for analysis or discussion etc.
- Apprentice could invite the Mentor to obs one of his games now and then - for on-the-go feedback.
- Any simple questions could be asked to the Mentor , e.g "How do I FFE on Shattered Temple?".
I hope everyone can get the idea of what I'm thinking. It's basically it would be a system where dedicated lower level players could receive some more specific help.
Obviously it couldn't be expected to be on the same level as paid-coaching, since that is quite time consuming for the coach, and our higher level players need to spend time growing themselves .
We would need some way to pick/cycle through apprentices, as I'm sure a lot of people would 'want' to be an apprentice.
Potential Mentors should have the following qualities:
- be patient
- be skilled (duh).
- able to articulate ideas well.
- driven to improve themselves.
- be polite.
- willing to put some time aside to mentor apprentices.
- able to accept criticism from lower skilled players. (Apprentices should be able to give you a 'review' after they've finished being your apprentice. So you can learn how to teach better too )
Potential Apprentices should have the following qualities:
- be patient
- be willing to accept criticism (duh).
- be polite.
- willing to stick to some form of practice regime.
What are your guys thoughts?
How should we decide who is fit to be a Mentor (being skilled doesn't always mean you're a good teacher).
How should we decide who gets to be an Apprentice?
How often should we rotate?
Mentors: Reply with race, account name, code (SEA) as well as what leagues you are comfortable coaching.
Apprentices: Reply with race, account name, code (SEA) as well as your league.
If a Mentor accepts an Apprentice, please reply to the thread so I can update
Personally I think this is a really good idea and could help with the growth of the team's players! Good initiative Trusty
EDIT: Even if it wasnt necessarily just 1 mentor, but a group of mentors overseeing a group of people from the same race. For instance, GM/Masters Mentors for Protoss getting together with the Protoss players from ToR and having a discussion/group replay analysis together. It could help to overcome the obstacles that most people have at their level, and it would be easier as less problems will be missed.

What no way.... You live in Townsville? I'm from Townsville man and I'm currently living in Mount Isa at the moment.
Where about in Townsville are you?...
Oh, it's ToRZorBa here btw. I think ima going to have to meet up with you some time
thats a really smart idea one of the reasons my play improved so fast when i picked this game up is a had a coach/mentor/friend that helped me a lot +1 to this idea and rep to trusty for being such a handsome stud
For now I think I'm a would be apprentice (although I'm happy to give some mentoring to some bronze players, since it's just mentoring - I do think proper coaching should be done by dia+) but I would really appreciate and value this sort of thing.
I feel like I am making huuuge steps in a lot of areas, and I feel a ton better, but there are some little things holding me back. The sort of things that would be perfect for this sort of thing to address!
One day, I'd be happy to mentor others properly too :P
ToR just keep on getting more awesome with this kind of ideas..
Go ToR !!

This is an awesome idea. I haven't done a great deal of 1v1s (about 150ish wins) i have enjoyed team games more but am looking to better my 1s play. I Diddnt rank last season but was High the season before that in 1v1. In 4s random i am top 8 for last 2 seasons. A Mentor would be excellent ^.^

Anyone thats had my training before it can be quite useful sign me up for something yo wouldnt mind "mentoring" even though i really need to get out of Gold on SEA Fuuuuu NZ to Singapore connection D:
I'm happy to help out any lower league zergs. keep in mind im only platinum (have for quite a few seasons) and may just teach bad habits.
regardless i am always happy to help when im online
Edit: ToRDjvillian.679 I have an idea of how I would like to help out. Basically I'd like to try a replay analysist but instead of blaintly pointing out how they can improve I'd like to hear their own analysist first and then give my opinion. This should help the lower leagues work on their weaknesses better IMO.
Any can hit me up on Skype: "Djvillian" and I can try answer questions there (on Skype all day when at work )

I'm his one and only student btw ^_^ chris does this mean your not gona mentor me anymore??? T_T
I'm sorry, you just don't listen to me anymore. All this "micro", I'm just sick of it. Either your stalkers are strong enough to stand and fight like men, or they should be marines.
I would be very dedicated to my master and I feel as though I am a fast learner I already take lessons from nRvBard on fridays. I am in bronze league but I mainly play against my master friends. my W/L ratio for Bronze is pretty decent and I feel as though once I start playing more ladder I will be gold/plat.
Roage.112 Have mic and skype.

What I think is needed is that people who are looking at having a mentor should PM that person, as much as I would like to help people it helps if we know a little of whats going on with you, issues and such.
Also I do think for those people that this works for we should have a feedback bit so in case some of the people classified as mentors are really good or bad (ofc to help improve what we all want to do)

I messaged the people I would like to mentor me but also posted on here just incase the ones I pm'd had already taken apprentices so someone might look upon my post and pick me up.

Thats awesome man!!!! Its more of a general post as peopole have posted in here and that is all. Good luck man!!! I would but protoss is my weakest, but with how long it took me to improve my terran shant be long until my brotoss gets awesome as well!
EDIT: Also I know im not in charge of this thread and all however could people please refrain from posting blatantly trollish or stupid reasons for wanting a mentor. I hate being a bummer on stuff like this but I think this deserves some seriousness

ok deaths can u pm me like ur playin times and what sort of things ur looking for.
also you weaknesses but yea ill b lookin into that more later when we start our training
Guys this isn't a sign-up for coaching or anything, it is a program only for ToR players.
Thats fair enough, I understand where you are coming from which is why I have been taking up other players not from ToR, as I myself am not from the clan as well, I just like to help spartaz out
Only reason I do it is cause its a fantastic idea!
I agree with you that this post is too outdated. However, this task should fall to Trusty who is the trend starter IMHO.
Also, any people (especially high master or GM) from outside ToR to help out will always be welcomed .

I dunno if I want to venture down the path that is a mentor program after the abusive history between myself and Peek
Although I'm not necessarily searching for a mentor (and fortunately already have a lot of guys happy to help me out) I might as well put my name down.
first of all i freakin love this idea and would love to be involved as a mentor. Temujai.807 (will be changing soon so will just update then), atm high diamond zerg but hopefully soon masters. comfortable mentoring anyone up to my level z, as well as up to plat toss.
also i have an idea based from a little bit of experience; ive done a little bit of coaching, and its all well and good to go through replays and analyse them and type up or communicate in some other form what the student or apprenctice can do better, however during a ladder game or some other practice match it takes a while to be able to implement all the things youve written down for them to work on and practice. so here's my idea (probably been done a billion times but) what if time frames were organised where, say a zerg apprentice and mentor were online as well as a set of terrans or protoss and a custom was set up with the mentors and apprentices on skype, with the mentor talking through the processes as they happen instead of the apprentice having to remember it all. ive tried organising little things but sometimes its a nightmare finding players of similiar skill to do practice games etc. sorry for the wall of text but id love to organise something like that to occur regularly.
anyways id love to take on a few apprentices, if it isnt a requirement to be in the clan ToR. ive talked to Spartaz a little bout this but havent done anything yet.
