i tried to ladder on SEA this season and gave it my best effort i have in any season, started in plat, got to rank 1 and tried to improve as much as i could, just got placed again in the bottom of plat.
feel like im actually getting worse not better so now i dont know if i can achieve any of the goals i wanted to, feel like quitting playing as not getting anywhere even though practicing as hard as i can

Won my placement, recent match history is this, few mid tier masters, 1-2 top 25 masters, couple of top 8 diamonds, 1 gm. Where do i get placed? Yup you guessed it.
Anyone that is disappointed, cheer up. Placements don't actually matter.
Your MMR is what matters, what is MMR? It's your "match-making rating". You need to keep winning against people higher than you consistently to get promoted. Winning / losing this placement actually does nothing other than add / subtract to your MMR. It's not any more important or worth more than ANY other ladder game other than the fact it unlocks the ladder for the new season for you.
I understand this is common knowledge for most people, but I feel this post is necessary due to unhappy / rage people I have had the pleasure of listening to today
That is all valid and reasonable maynarde. Only point is that ladder has been locked and some people feel like they have improved their MMR sufficiently in that week (see, Spoon's example). It's just that the week where they -know- they can't be promoted despite a good performance leads to an increase in that expectation, and hence the disappointment when that magical placement game comes along.
In any case, if you keep winning like that spoon, promotion will be really soon...
My version of rezyn's post (I'll update later tonight when I do my placements...
Interesting note, I got Gold on SEA and NA the same day (Not during placement)...

Gonna try play more SEA this season and aim for top 20 GM, not really too fond of a goal like that since you can only control how much you practice not how fast you improve. Would definitely be satisfied if i got top 20 though!
gl to everyone else and if your goal is a certain league don't get too sad about not achieving it, just be happy that you're practicing the amount that you want to
I'm just annoyed cause my aim for last season was to get to diamond on sea and I put more effort in than I have before and didn't make it. I know the placement doesn't matter, but I was like 90% sure I would get promo. It's demoralizing knowing I have to ladder my account back up to the top to try get promo again

It's not a matter of points mate. It's a matter of win ratio. Pretty sure those rough numbers blizzard say will get you a promotion is a rough average of ~60% win ratio just using all your bonus pool with the kind of matchups you'll get with that ratio. So provided you win at that rate and keep up beating diamonds, you'll be promoted without a set number of points.

Lol I said it 3 times in chat - you don't need to "level up to the top" - your MMR is the same as it was before. Placement match can be important, but only if you are in the right situation with your MMR range

You will probably get promoted in a few games.
i dont think ive ever heard of someone being promoted unless theyre at least in top ten of the division unless they have like 80-90% win ratio though. i know ive personally never been promoted outside the top 5?

that's because if you maintain a consistent 60%+ winrate and use up all your bonus pool, you're likely to get to top of your division simply by virtue of being a side effect of a higher MMR.
you can get to the top of your division just by having 50% winrate and spending all your bonus pool. How many top diamond players (for example) do you see each season with 300ish wins and 300ish losses? They aren't close to Masters, despite what they may think. The people close to Masters are the people below them with 100 wins and 70 losses.

Yeah this is all true.
I guess this season ill make my goal to play at least 5 games a day, watch all my replays and critique, and get some coaching. That way I wont have to think about leagues and points and silliness

Finished at rank 9 . Was rank 4 previously. Disappointed that i missed out on the top 8 achievement. Should've continued playing just before the season ended. Definitely aiming for by mid season.

Yeah, I also maintained my top 8 diamond for the first half or so of the season (and solid rank 1 for a bit of that). Then I tanked a lot mid-season and dropped to around rank 40-50. I think I ended somewhere around 13-14 in Diamond. Also gunning for masters ASAP...
But... Forever diamond, ftw.

Well last week i was bronze.... and yesterday i was masters..so according to my calculations, if i do my placement tonight i should be roughly... lightning league
Season 5, although I was no where near laddering hardcore, I reached my set goals of top 8 Korea and 1st in my NA masters division (didn't bother to try get into NA GM late in the season, nearly impossible.)
With Season 6 and some nice new maps, I got my goals set already:
Korea - Top 6 Masters
NA - Top 100 GM
SEA - Top 20 GM (i find it hard to bother on SEA so this wouldn't be bad)
I have never been a hardcore ladderer but if I can achieve all of these I would consider it a success .
Well my aims since I'm back downtown silver is get to plat. And promote QED by streaming and casting events of anyone will have me do so. As well as continuing adding vods to the YouTube.
I also want to keep supporting froggy with admin duties.
My mates and I have always played team games...but now focusing on getting better at 1v1s! we did tonnes of practice games and now we're gonna see who can get the highest ranking once the season opens! :P
Don't really mind where I end up, but at least hoping that i beat my mates hehe! Anyone else got some prop bets on re ranking?
i didn't get a placement game yet? im in platinum and im playing masters frequently and winning 50%, every single match is 'even match' for me and there diamond, i play absolutely no platinum players, im winning 75%+ of my games vs diamonds, someone said my MMR is ridiculously high and it was bugged out or something? wtf is happening

I was going to make a post about how i got diamond again after being diamond since season 1, since i had never played enough games to get promoted (no more than 20 last season), and that i was going to try really hard to play more games and get promoted. But then i got promoted to masters on my fifth game of the season
after many a season in & , and race changes from terran to zerg and back, i have finally hit as Terran. Having tried all the others, i am finally settled into the race i want to be - the one with 50 mineral units that shoot up and down and scale amazingly with upgrades. Terran suits my playstyle the best, when i was last terran i wasnt good with stim or tanks. Herpa Derp.
My initial plan was that i would hit plat without any help or real build order, but once i hit plat i was goign to tighten things down a bit and get some coaching to shoot for diamond by the end of s6. And essentially i have done it, hit plat while still not really having tight build orders, just some general ideas that get tightened up a bit over time. To achieve diamond i will:-
1) get coaching from AsGChobo - already arranged, just waiting for him to get back from holidays;
2) play 4 games on the SEA server every day. last season i played heaps of games on other servers (the thought being that i would get more practice at the same MMR without actually really caring whether i win or lose, to then go back to SEA and be better than my SEA MMR. gold is srs bzns k?!?!);
3) play in the GPD as many weeks as possible. I want to be in diamond, so i should be playing against as many diamonds in srs situations as possible.
If you see me around sc2sea or online, please feel free to ask how i am going to keep me motivated. i REALLY want to hit diamond by the end of this season.
So good that so many people are getting promotions. sc2sea

I'm not touching a game on my main at the moment. Going to use my smurf to freely level up. Less Stress, more less worrying about my rank. I know where i am in terms of skill level, and i don't want it to be interrupted by a losing streak.
Masters last season, had a ton of disconnect issues so I stopped laddering on SEA after autolosing about 10 games. A little worried I might get demoted. In any case, I got cannon rushed in my placement and lost.
He was in Masters and got demoted. I stayed Masters. Serves him right ^^
Lol, I was high gold at one time. But then I started to troll on my account and now I am back into silver apparently and I'm losing badly lol. This is terrable good bye sc2 back to BW

After doing both placement matches on NA and SEA I once again got placed in for 1v1's for both servers.
My goal is by the end of this season to hit but won't be too bummed if it doesn't happen - if I'm improving then that's good enough for me. I have days where I will beat diamonds and days where I'll get owned by gold's so obviously have to bridge the gap and fix the mistakes I'm making.
Just need to put in some more time to laddering on SEA as I haven't been doing too much laddering recently and when I have I've jumped between servers a fair bit.
