With the increase of popularity of starcraft II and Esports in general. We see new events arising in hte community such as barcrafts.
what makes a barcraft?
What does it take for one to be succussfull.
Are there Any barcrafts in Brisbane Or jsut anywhere that welcomes people to watch the GSL or other tournaments?
I would like to add onto this what makes starcraft so succesfull in the US and when can we start to see this progress of Esports in Australia?

Sydney Barcraft GSTL Finals a couple months back was actually one of the first major Barcrafts (in the world) APL have since held another to much success (both had 300+ people) I believe Mana Bar in QLD (not sure whether Mana bar is in GC or Brissie) held a barcraft for SEA/ANZ Battle.net Invitationals and it was a bit of a flop
What makes them successful is the way in which it is promoted, if no one knows about it no one can attend, having a venue that is easy to get and in a central location are also ticks in my book
Im sure the guys from APL will be able to give you some tips

Population... US has 10 times (or more) the population than Australia. Plus because of the active nature of Australian culture, there is a lower propensity to be an avid gamer...
Also, because there aren't as many viewers, there isn't even a tenth of the advertising dollar and sponsorship involved to develop these events. This all takes time..
Barcrafts, I think they do some at Mana Bar?.. I think..idk
venom, I think we had one a while ago at the Mana Bar, however not sure how successful it was (I didnt even know about it)
However, there are probably plenty of people who are keen. Ingame, a few of us hang out in the channel 'Briscraft' and all are welcome (we haven't really gone around advertising, maybe we should)
But hey, maybe ACL Gold Coast is a good time to chat to some people from around Brisbane, I know we have the numbers to get a decent barcraft happening!
Mana bar is in Fortitude Valley (inner city area of Brisbane), I didn't end up going to that one actually (too poor) but the place is really tiny, I don't think it would be an ideal venue for a barcraft with its layout. That said, it's a 'gaming' bar so I guess that's why they decided to host it there.

I agree with this, and doesn't really have the 'bar' feel to it.
I think you need a place to sit back and watch the games, just like if you went to a sports bar (this is eSports after all).
I don't mind putting some effort into looking for a place to get one happening for either the Code S finals, or some other future event if there's enough interest
The issue I can foresee is that because the Mana Bar is inherently a gaming bar, the management would be inclined to facilitate for a barcraft.
With other bars, however, I can imagine some logistical issues with drumming up the support from management.
SUP SONS, I'm J-HILLY FROM BRISBANE YO (okay I felt that was a necessary introduction to an otherwise and boring and informative post).
There is a huge scene in Brisbane for sc2. We have some of the best players in the country going to events whenever they are on!
Barcraft was hosted at the Manabar a few months ago for the SEA/ANZ invitational finals.. However the venue is very small for a 'barcraft' (imo), yet the gesture was nice and if there was a bigger venue I definitely think the turnout would be huge (also maybe going to a place where basics weren't 8 dollars could help too).
I work at a bar at the moment, and I could (should) pitch the idea to my boss, but I'm not sure he would see the worth (considering we currently don't have the internet at the pub and the cost of setting up such a service would be big).. I don't know, it's worth a shot though.
ACL is holding it's national finals down the GC next week, which is pretty sick and I know there will be a huge turn out for that. If you want to know about venues for brisbane tournaments.. usually they're always held at Elysium (it's easy for everyone to get to).. and the room is always packed for the day.

Completely wrong sorry solis. This is just one of many national events in 2012. The finals will be toward the end of the year.
Back onto the Barcraft topic, there are plenty of pubs that would openly accept Barcraft, although I do agree a weekday would suit them more in most instances.

I should've been more clear then, because in my mind if you hold qualifiers in every major esports hub and then have a tournament that invites the winners/highest seeds it seems kind of like a 'final'. I also use the term 'final' very loosely, I guess more accurate words would be 'the first major tournament' for the ACL.
Also, I don't think the fox logically could host barcraft, we'd need a decent internet connection :S I've been trying to get my boss keen on the idea for a little while now, but I don't know :S

No dramas mate, it does definitely seem like a final, and it is of sorts, its just a branding issue to ensure noone gets confused when we actually have a massive, special National Finals
Back to the barcraft... with the right promotion, how many do you reckon Brisbane can get? 100+ ?
I think the trick would be to hunt around for a suitable venue that tends to be a little quiet around the time of the event. Surely someone would be interested in trying it out if it means getting some business they wouldn't usually get.
Bjorn, it's definitely a challenge, but by no means impossible. The fox is one that comes to mind, they've hosted a weekly board game league before. Only thing is they don't have a suitable viewing area with decent TV (as far as I remember anyway), otherwise I would have made the call already
No club owner in Brisbane city/Fortitude Valley would agree to having a Barcraft... Manabar is the only one that would go for it because they are a gaming bar..
I don't see having a small venue as an issue, as Brisbane has A) Tiny population B) very few gamers C) Very few bars.

Well I already mentioned one that would - the Fox. I would bet there are others. The only challenge would be major events on Saturdays and Sundays. Makes GSL finals tough, but MLG and Dreamhack finals could line up nice if people are keen for a pub lunch/liquid breakfast.
Anyway, as I said I am happy to arrange something, so don't worry about naysaying, just leave it to me

If you can get The Fox to agree to hosting a barcraft that wasn't in some back alley room, I will personally give you $100.
People are going on about how big the scene is in Brisbane and how we need a bigger bar than Manabar, when Manabar was a tiny turnout to begin with? I don't get it?

As I said, I am absolutely certain I could, obviously with the exception of weekend afternoons/evenings which rules out GSL. But I don't think they suit as they don't have a proper TV area, so whether they will or not is beside the point, I am merely saying that is one bar we could. There was a board game league a friend ran that used their entire games room (taking over their pool tables and all) every Tuesday with about 10-20 dudes a night. Since they went to play a game and might buy a beer on the side and we are going with the specific idea of going to a bar (i.e. spending money at their bar) I could swing it very easily. In fact, I'm tempted to get the OK for a wednesday night barcraft, send you their response then cancel it with them :P

You'd be surprised, in Perth, we've had some bars be super cooperative with us when hosting barcrafts. You just need to show them how profitable it really is, and when you start getting 100+, they generally have no complains and are happy to oblige your recommendations and even set up deals.
Hit up UQSL man, heaps of Brisbane players lurk there (It's the UQ Starcraft Society's channel).. The Starcraft Society has about 300 members, if you hit me up on facebook @ facebook.com/jessethehill I can invite you :3

I think somewhere between 20-40 is a more reasonable mark to aim for for the first barcraft, as long as it's an event that a few people are willing to travel for.
I think it's one of those situations where there are a bunch of people who might not jump on board straight away (social gathering with e-nonymous strangers) and wait to see how the first pans out, and will decide to attend based on that?
I definitely think 100+ is a reasonable down-the-track estimate though
We had events at UQ this year for the Starcraft Society, but to be honest... I never went 1) because it was at UQ and I have no idea how to get around that campus and 2) because all of the GSL finals were really anti-climatic and it was easier to watch from home.
However if something was organized for the Red Room (I think that's the 18+ bar) it could totally work. UQ is fairly easy to get to, it's just navigating that massive campus that's the hard part.
Heck, I'd even be interested in learning to make some sweet cocktails for the event and charging like 6 dollars each for them (not huge ones but mini ones).. The ones at Manabar were good, but 15 dollars a drink T_T I'll stick to beer/vodka thanks!

We could organise to meet @ the RE and then just jump on a bus. Does anyone just have a massive house?
If we had a massive house we could BYO piss and just make it like an Origin style event..
This was an early suggestion from Volition who knew a guy... But I think it might have been with the expectation of only around 10 people. Will have a chat to him, he's been oddly quiet on this thread (he kind of kicked it all off + made the BrisCraft chan
I am going to the ACL at the convention This week. i am Still after a place to stay there. like people to stay with and all that. If u are interested let me know!
It would be cool to include everyone but suitable venues might be tough enough to find without finding ones that do all ages. But no reason that just because say, the first one is 18+ doesn't mean they always will be.
What about trying places further out of the city? Maybe places like the Glen Hotel at Eight Mile Plains, or Mt Gravatt Hotel? On a side note, Elysium Internet Cafe will run a tournament if enough people like the post I made on their facebook wall.

Yeah man I totally know what you're saying... Of course there is potential.... However I'm basing what I'm saying on the turnout to the Barcraft @ Manabar, coupled with the small population of Brisbane, and the general asshole attitude of most club owners in Brisbane.
I run Barcraft in Perth and it's huge. Its all about location and promotion. You need to find somewhere central and also, close to a UNI is good too.
Then spend several weeks promoting the crap out of it. Start a Facebook group/twitter account
Do up flyers, put them at the UNI campus and at LAN cafe's, etc.
Maybe if we pick a big upcoming event and then spam call an agreed upon establishment. The mana bar is (I say this tentatively) not the greatest of bars but the barcraft event was pretty good! Maybe try again there and get a bigger build up + turnout?

Iink there's another thread with the discussion, but I understood that where we were at was some UQSS guys were going to see about organising something, potentially on campus.
