Aean is exactly right - the casters are only looking at the top level of play, rather than the league overall.

I started playing in March, and I've been playing on the SEA and AM servers at the same time. I couldn't get out of bronze in SEA until I was solidly in gold on AM - then I didn't get into gold on SEA until I was solidly in plat on AM.

Things start to close up at around high plat - I've just got into diamond on AM, and I'm in plat playing against a mix of plat and diamond in SEA. I get the feeling they probably get equivalent somewhere in low-mid diamond.
