quick question guys... is it worth running x64 windows 7?
My question would be why would you run x86 Windows 7? You wouldn't be getting the most out of your hardware. There are enough 64-bit drivers around very everything you'd need. I don't see the downside to running 64-bit over 32-bit...

A thousand times yes if you like memory.
With 32-bit Windows, you're stuck at 4GB of RAM, and even then, you're only using about 3.3GB of it, give or take. With 64-bit, 4GB of RAM is the new minimum standard, and with 4GB, you can run tons of applications with zero slowdown. Windows 7 (and Vista for that matter) runs so beautifully with 4GB of RAM you'll wonder how you ever did with less. It makes your system more futureproof too, so you can take your system to 8GB, 32GB or even a terabyte, before too long.

That 24gb ram in 4x8Gb sticks? How much were they?
8 times 4 is 32 brah. I think they were about 60 bucks for a kit, was a while back though I built this rig about 6 months ago and forgot most of the prices. I bought all my stuff from MSY. So cheap and so stocked.

yes. with x86(32bit) all you're going to see is 4GB max
with x64 4Gb is the minimum standard. Runs a little better.
Majority of applications and hardware can run on x64

I would still say that unless you are planning to get >4GB RAM then you would want it. And 4GB isn't really minimum, more like the standard amount to get. I used to run off 2GB for about 6 months and didn't give me much trouble though I wasn't the type of guy to run 20 taxing processes at once so that kinda helped. Also during that time I was just running on 32-bit XP.

Looking to get another GTX 570, SATA 6 SSD and RAM upgrades in the future. (when funds recharge lol)
My rig is a bit embarassing for a gaming rig but hey, it does the job for the moment until I can get some cash together for a proper gaming rig.
Macbook Pro 13"
Razer Black Widow Keyboard
Razer Death Adder Mouse
and that's about it. Pretty dodge I know, I have the Macbook Pro for my music business and it just does the job of running starcraft 2. Eventually I will be building my own rig for when I start getting a bit more serious.
I must say though, both the Black Widow and Death Adder are amazingly awesome
Ok I had to do a core system rebuild last year because the mother board died and took with it the cpu and ram it was kinda scary it melted the cpu to the socket pins haha.
Any way as follows:
CPU = i5 2500
Ram = 8 gig
Video Card = GTX275 (want to replace this as it won't properly support dvi monitors for some reason Gigabyte/Asus clash)
HDD = about 5tb of hdd space
Case = Old version of the Cooler Master Cosmos S pro
If you're running 32bit at the moment, I doubt you'd see vast improvements from upgrading your OS. I think the main benefit to 64bit as far as gaming is concerned is that it gets you past the 4GB (or whatever it is) RAM barrier.

This is the major benefit from x64. As a 32 bit system, 4gb is all you get. 4gb Ram is now becoming the low end of the scale, and you're probably going to need 8-12gb soon to run games like Battlefield 3 and MW3.
To the person who posted the question, upgrade if you can to 64 bit.

RAM has very little to do with running games, so I don't know what your on about. The only reason you would need more then say.. 3-4GB RAM is if you have 100 unnecessary programs running. I'm running off of 2GB RAM and I can have chrome open, itunes playing, sc2 open, msn, and a whole lot of other junk and I don't even surpass my memory capacity. I mean, maybe its 'cus I learnt to be efficient - I've been gaming on a 1GB RAM comp for a few years before upgrading to 2GB.

Dunno about hundreds of unnecessary programs, but with all my gears drivers running, steam, skype, Virus Scan software and daemon tools all running, not to mention windows 7's numerous background programs that they automatically run, I need more RAM. I think if you look at your processes tab in windows task manager, you'll see what i mean. Currently i'm at 79 different processes running. I'm sure that's a little excessive. But 40-50 is common. However you do have a point, if you have nothing on your computer in the way of extra programs running then you should be fine.
Also, RAM does affect games. Different programs access different amounts of the RAM at any one point in time. Thus the more RAM you have, the higher amount of RAM your game can access. Similarly, The CPU processes through either your Hard Drive, or your RAM. RAM is dozens of times faster than your Hard Drive, so the more ram you have, the faster your CPU can run programs. So while it is not necessary to have lots of RAM, if you ever experience long ass loading times, or a bit of lag in a game when you move from one section to another, that would be because you dont have enough RAM.
