[Review] Mechanical Keyboards Interest

Basically copy n pasted this from one of my best friends(lsp)

"Is there any interest for standard mechanical keyboards?

My friend is thinking of getting some standard keyboards made with Cherry MX Brown mech key switches (arguably the best key switches for gaming)

The goal is to offer gamers a no frills, standard keyboard with the best mech keys, at an affordable price. You don't pay for any branding or gimmicks, just a high quality standard keyboard for gaming.

Obviously there needs to be significant interest before my friend risks a ton of money to get these made, so if you are interested please respond, and offer suggestions on customizations, and what the price should be, etc.

Hopefully there will be enough interest to get this going and he can help gamers worldwide by shipping to them a quality mech keyboard at a price much lower than any of the current options available."

Me and tender just bought our cherry brown keyboards after we found out that even the girls in our clans were already using that keyboard wtf! meiying and kelly lol. anyway tender was raving about how great the keyboard is for the last week. Mine is still at his house, i am too lazy to collect it from him.

it was really pricey tho, i think the shop guy wanted to sell us for $190 but we got it thru a contact for $175.

Hi,
I am that "friend" that wants to get the keyboards made.

Cherry makes the most popular mech switches, there are 3 main flavors, BLUE, BROWN, and BLACK.

The top of the line Razor keyboard uses Cherry MX BLUE switches, and the top SteelSeries keyboard i think uses Cherry MX BLACK switches.

There are various spec differences between the flavors, but the general opinion is that BLUE is best for typing, BLACK is best for FPS, but bad for typing, and BROWN is somewhat a middle ground, and the preferred switch for RTS.

The keyboards can use any of these flavors but i am leaning toward the BROWNS, as most RTS players use them, and i'd still like to be able to type lots of shit without getting annoyed with BLACKS.

what about red switches, I heard those are super rare. They are linear like black, but have accentuation like blues i think, wouldn't those be the best for rts?

I'm interested though =]

I ordered my filco brown switch keyboard (Birthday present !) from the states and its currently on its way...

Ridiculously expensive however (Paid $235NZD all up)...If yoor friend could dampen the costs then they should make a killing considering how popular these keyboards are becoming

There's a seriously good writeup on mechanical keyboards found here
http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/4...ard-guide.html

I personally use a Filco Majestouch with Cherry MX Blue keys. They type beautifully as long as you don't mind the clicking, like say if you share room with someone else and he/she might be sleeping.

I've tried both the brown and the blues and I preferred the blues (it boils down to actuation point, and the clicky thing which is a blast from the past for me). The plus point for the browns on the other hand are that they're quieter than the blues, but don't be fooled because the way the switches are made, there's still a sound when your key hits the baseplate, so browns still generate noise, just not the levels of the blues. I also tried the mx blacks and the whites, they just feel damn off, don't like the feel at all, the lack of tactile sensation makes it feel really weird, at least for me, at the end of the day.

I've also tried a Filco blue vs the Razer Black Widow, and I'll gladly pay the 30-50 bucks difference between the Filco and Black Widow to get a Filco, and I'll strongly recommend to anyone who's already willing to fork out ~150+ to get keyboard to pay abit more to get a Filco instead of the Razer, (or 200+, please don't waste money on backlights, if you're worth your salt as a gamer/hardcore nerd, you won't even be looking down on the keyboard so whats the point?)

The Filco keyboard has a smaller footprint is much denser and has a better feel to the MX blue switches once its mounted on the baseplate compared to the Black Widow, go try it, the uncle at tecdrome in simlim (singapore) let me try both and yeah, although razer says that it uses a mx blue switch, the feel on the filco and the razer are ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.

So before sinking your hard earned cash into a keyboard, you better get a chance to try out all the keys before coming to a decision, at the end of the day, its just a keyboard where you have to live with. And since I do more work on the keyboard than game, I've decided to go with the MX Blue and its true, that damn thing types like a dream. When I go to my office and use a rubber dome keyboard, I feel like breaking it in half when the Ctrl key gets sticky. So like what James Bond said about the Vesper Martini, once you've used a mechanical keyboard, you'll never want to use anything else again.

Ok I actually did a lot of research on the keyboards before buying it because it was so expensive. I think the top steelseries keyboard you are talking about is 7g, which costs about 250SGD and the top Razer keyboard you are talking about is the black widow. Personally I do not use Razer products anymore because of the lifespan of the products as many Razer users would know. I am using a Steelseries Xai mouse and Filco Cherry Blue switches keyboard.
I actually went down to the shop to try out all the different Blue, Black and Brown switches.

I was torn between the brown one and blue one but the tactile from the Blue keyboard was just too alluring for me. When Sheep told me he got the Razer lycosa I was taking jabs at him, and before a competition, I let him try my cherry blue and he kind of fell in love with it and decided to go with the brown.

If I am not wrong, Fruitdealer is using Filco Cherry Brown keyboard, and it sold out online from the shop after he posted a picture of him using it.
One of the fruitdealer wannabes aka moonglade went to get it immediately after it was out. So most of the top players around are all using these mechinical keyboards.

The thing about using this for RTS is that when choosing the switches, you should always choose base on "feel". For me, black is too soft and the keys compress too easily, brown was better but like I said, the tactile blue sold me.

I suggest the brown for anyone who is going for in between, and blue for people who like to "press down" on their keyboards, and black for people who like to use little strength and use their fingers to fly across the keyboard without much effort.
There's a lot of write ups on different forums regarding these keyboards.

Hope serious starcraft2-ians will switch to Mech Keyboards! They are gosu!!!

GO aLt !! /o/

Ahha. Kelly is gonna say I'm giving her grief again, but heck.

I need to clear up a misconception about mechanical keyboards.

You do not need to "press down" on mechanical keyboards, especially tactile ones. The meaning of tactile means when you press down on the key, there's a 'give', like sudden change in pressure to indicate that the key has "triggered". This is usually close to when the key really "actuates" which means that a signal is sent to your computer. So for such keyboards you really don't have to bottom out your key, you probably just need to move it 2mm, once you get a click, you can release pressure and move on to the next key, and this is awesome because it can seriously increase your apm/wpm (gamer/typist).

That being said, the blacks aren't "tactile" which means there's no "pressure change" to indicate to you that the key has triggered.

When someone like me, with good hands/fingers types on it, you'll hear a nice constant soothing stream of clicks which is actually extremely therapeutic. Unfortunately for people with jackhammers for fingers, you'll hear something more akin to a power drill on concrete. For evidence, tune in to my ustream site here and watch OxygeN's HwaitinG VODs and listen for the air raid which goes on in the background over the some bits of the first part (28:30 onwards).

But all things being said, all the Cherry MX keyswitches are made to an extremely high quality so rest assured no matter which one you get, it'll still be awesome, you just have to find something which fits your style.

ah i see. wow, half price.. that's quite a significant amount of price reduction. are there any cons for it to be brandless like you said? i mean how can i be certain that it would last me ~5 years, and could survive the wear and tear that comes from avid gaming? basically just want to know if it would exactly be like the normal filco and still have the same durability and all, but brandless and half-price?

I strongly suggest the Steelseries 7G. It has so many other features besides being a really solid (brown switch) keyboard. Its very robust and ergonmically designed. The rest is super comfortable.

Filco keyboards are soooo popular too at the moment, but from a gaming perspective I think the Steelseries 7G exceeds it on so many fronts.

Was tossing up between the 7G and black widow ultimate, the 7G probably would've been the better choice for gaming, but I couldn't go past the sexy clicky blue switch sound of the black widow. Haven't tried Browns but they sound good.

need to clear some misconceptions, steelseries 7g is a black switch, not brown, its linear non tactile and non clicky.

browns are tactile and non clicky
blues are tactile and clicky

the steelseries 7g is an awesome keyboard, granted ,but switch choice is entirely up to user preference. the 7g is a massive beast (with the handrest) with a huge footprint, the filcos on the other hand, are sleek and sexy and don't take up too much table real estate, so its entire up to you to choose what you prefer and the advantage for RTS games as opposed to FPS games on the 7g isn't THAT big a difference for the switch choice

but if you're looking for an all round keyboard to suit your daily needs on top of gaming, like say you type alot of stuff, then i suggest you get a filco instead of a 7g, linear keys are abit harder to type stuff on for long term, that's my personal take.

I'm interested! Would you ship to NZ? I've been looking for a new keyboard for awhile. What standard keyboard will you use? I'd recommend buying a cheap one that has no gap between the # keys and the F keys, so you can easily hit the F keys while resting your fingers on 1,2,3 !
Also, do you have an estimated price? No big wrist rests on the keyboards and no chunky space bars plz!

Brown are like the "in-betweens". Blue is extremely tactile and for people who like to press their keys and really feel them, and black are like for those who like super soft keys and can just compress the key a little to make it work.
I'm a blue!!!

Actually all switches need to be compressed about the same depth to get them to work, specifically around 2mm, difference is mostly in the force required and whether there's a tactile feedback or not.

For more info:

Lets try to keep this purely on what we'd like the keyboards to be like ^^;

I think a completely standard layout like the filco keyboards would be completely fine, no need for a wrist rest or fancy layout. The no gap between # and F keys would be cool I guess mis-types might be an issues though. I was thinking maybe have the F# keys just above the # keys? ie. F1 over 1, F2 over 2 etc. That has always been something that kinda bugged me.
But like I said, a completely standard layout is fine =]
Also could we have like sc2sea printed on it or something like that? xD

yes we plan to ship worldwide, or at least australasia. we do not have a price right now but it will be significantly lower than any other option (and we won't proceed unless we can make it happen.)

at the moment we will probably go with a standard sized 104 key keyboard. the cost of customizing the layout is actually pretty high so we gotta try sticking to molds that the manufacturers already have.

changing the layout will raise the price and increase the risk, like if it turns out a bunch of people love it but a bunch of guys hate it so we gotta be cautious here.

But we do want to know what you guys want in a keyboard, the no gap between the F and # keys is pretty cool but would accidental mis-types be a problem?

Along time ago IBM use to sell keyboards and these keyboards would have the F keys directly above the #1 keys. My friend who is actually an ex wc3 pro gamer in the states told me that he bought 10 of the IBM Rapid Access III keyboards right before they sold out because he knew how rare keyboards like these would become.

Click the image to open in full size. Actually asked him to take a picture to show you guys .

thanks for the pic!

anything else about key positions? should the Esc key be ideally located above/away from the Function key row? any changes to the Ctrl key? (the Flash keyboard has to option to map the windows key to the Ctrl key)

That would be pretty awesome too ;o but usually people just rip out that windows key, so if it's more money to do I think you should just leave it .

I don't think the windows key is such a big problem nowadays, most games have an option to disable it. I would just remove it entirely as I don't think it's all that useful, but I think that'll probably cost extra cash lol

Esc key should be red imo would fit really well haha ;p

with cherry blue switches, its impossible for anyone to sleep in the same room as the keyboard. brown is still alot louder then your average rubber dome keyboard but is quite manageable when you get use to it.

i personally have a dual keyboard setup (2 keyboads plugged in, razer blackwidow + g15) cause no one living with me can bare with it (i only use it when no ones around etc)

I recently bought a Razer BW Ultimate and the key clicks aren't too loud, but would keep someone up if they're in the same room as you. I found this youtube video for you; it's pretty accurate on how it sounds...

And the Razer BW has blue-switches... from memory.

Just got one like 2 days ago, awesome keyboard and yeah it is pretty loud but thats part of the charm in my opinion.

Noticed a difference in LoL, not so much sc2

I don't use the razer blackwidow when people are around, and also, mechanical keyboards don't actually directly increase your apm, but more in a indirect way. For eg. i have a rhythm of the tapping of my keyboard, and when i dont hear it, i know im doing something wrong, so it helps me sustain a certain apm.

Does the blackwidow actually use Cherry switches? Nowhere in the technical details does it ever say that it uses Cherry blue switches, I think it's razer's own technology.

It is 101% cherry blue switches, if you take off the keys you'll see the switches have 'Cherry' written on them.

I own a filco blue and the blackwidow feels lighter to type with. Haven't tried it for gaming though.

I think that the general consensus is.
Filco (if you have the cash)
Steel Series V7 (if you have the cash)
Or Razer's Black Widow (as a cheaper alternative).

For me, the cheapest would either be Filco or the BW as they're worth about 100-130 AU at the moment... I just don't want to shell out that money when I brought my Lycosa not long ago.

I need a feedback on a Razer Lycosa keyboard since I am currently hunting for some gaming keyboards on ebay. How good is it? I am rather interested at it since I love keyboards with flattened keys like the lycosa has.

http://cgi.ebay.com/RAZER-LYCOSA-BAC...ht_1716wt_1270

However, I do understand that the Blackwidow is seen as a better razer product from the posts so I'm hoping someone who has used them before would be able to tell me the difference between the two products. The lycosa is cheaper but I am a sucker for the flattened keys that the Lycosa offers.

On a side note: why isn't the razer marauder mentioned? Is the price inflated because of the apm lighting and it's generally shit? I just realised that it's not a mechanical keyboard. :P Just a standard gaming keyboard. But does anyone use this keyboard for sc2? Would love to get some feedback on it.

Personally, arctosa/lycosa are crap keyboards, i cringe every single time a net cafe has one of these keyboards, the "pressing" feel of buttons is very strange (sometimes i have to press the buttons pretty hard for my key to register), the whole build of the keyboard seems very weak, rubber keys will get worn pretty quickly.

I have not tried blackwidow but from the looks of it the macro keys may/do get in the way and the F keys are positioned differently from your "classic" keyboard. (I also personally dont like blue switches, too loud :<)

Have not tried marauder at all so cannot comment on it (although all the lights and whatnot look pretty cool)

My recommendation would be to get steelseries 6gv2 or 7g, minimalist design, no macro keys, no flashy lights, keyboard is built like a brick, black switches are much more quiter than blue (although some people dont like the amount of force needed to activate the keys, i dont have that problem though :S), has full no key roll over if you use PS2 ports.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Steelseries-7G-m...item3f09b580b8

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Steelseri...item3f09a4c1a6

Now that lycosa costs ~$80, 6gv2 from the link above ~$135 with postage included, thats a $55 dolar difference for a keyboard that will last you a VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY long time and built with quality in mind.

I find it hard justifying paying over $100 for a keyboard. I'd be interested in anything under though if possible

The idea is that once you buy one of these mechanical keyboards, you will never need to buy another keyboard again. Think of the savings! If your mechanical keyboard costs k, and the inferior keyboard that you usually buy costs $30, you save $(30n - k)!

EDIT: I am actively looking into this again, I had abandoned this because it did not seem possible to get something out at a much lower cost than branded keyboards & I got super busy with work (im less busy now though). I will update this again if I'm able to find something workable.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates, after speaking to a few manufacturers it seemed like too much risk and then i got caught up with work and just let it go completely.

Basically, to make a custom layout its gonna cost something like 10k for the mold. This will greatly increase the cost per unit unless we are making a few thousand. I was looking at making something like 500.

Here is the minimum selling price if I were to make 500 custom layout keyboards: $110USD. That is way beyond my target price and defeats the purpose of this endeavor.

once again, sorry for abandoning the forum without an update!

btw, a basic(no custom mold cost), quality (taiwan made) keyboard with cherry brown switches, laser printed keys and N-key rollover will sell for about minimum 80USD. That is also a lot higher than I expected.

At that price its no different from a branded keyboard

a steelseries 6gv2/7g uses black switches which is horrible and will tire your fingers out. if you're playing RTS it's highly discouraged, go for blue/brown switches

This. I have no idea how anyone could enjoy using black switches for RTS/typing.

Thanks for the advices, guys. Now to look for the blue/brown switches. :S I suppose any decent gaming keyboard is better than my microsoft keyboard atm. HAHA! I have to say though that I am impressed at the simplicity of the steelseries 6v2.

I own both the steelseries 6gv2 and the black widow and i can guarantee for most users, that blue switch is much easier on the fingers where it requires alot of repetition.
I hear blue/brown is best for rts and black for FPS. Only downside i can think of for blue is the sound, but i personally love the clicky sounds. Then again this is all a subjective opinion

Seeing as my wife spilled beer all over my keyboard (only a crappy logitech wave) and subsequently turned it over to get the amber ale out, which made it worse, I am looking for a new keyboard.

I have been looking at EliteKeyboards.com and their TenKeyless Brown/Blue boards which are around US$110. They look to be recommended on TL. http://www.elitekeyboards.com/produc...old,tenkeyless

I have also been looking at the Blackwidow (Blue) and SS7G (Black) keyboards.

Anyone got a recommendation?

I will most likely get the SS7G/Blackwidow while I am in Hong Kong at the end of the month or if I do go down the EliteKeyboards path I may look to do a bulk order if people here are interested.

If anyone in australia is interested in trying a mechanical, most EB stores should have a Razer Blackwidow in stock now. If you ask nicely most of them will let you take it out for a feel, otherwise the packaging has a gap over the arrow keys so you can at least feel those.

But don't buy from EB stores. Blackwidow standard was like 178 when i saw it? Online its 120 including shipping.

If you're in sydney there's a cheap asian computer store in Chatswood. Not sure what the area is called but its in that pedestrian mall area. They have Blackwidows and Steelseries for pretty cheap i think.

You know the pedestrian mall outside Westfield? The one you use to get to City Hunter? If you walk about 2/3 of the way up it the shop is on the left. Can't remember what its called.
