A very bored sc2 player :(

Hey guys
Recently I achieved on the SEA server and naturally I was very happy ^.^
But after a few weeks, I have lost alot of interest in the game..
"Why have you lost interest?" you squirrels may ask. (Yes, for some reason you guys are squirrels, don't ask why lol..)

Well up until now the improvements and errors in my gameplay were very obvious, so it was easy for me to be preoccupied by improving on those obvious mistakes whether they be mechanical, strategical or scouting errors.
But now that I've reached a decent level in starcraft 2, the errors are less obvious and it just bores me!!

I've even started mucking around and off-racing and I sucked! (I'm currently by just going immortal sentry for z v p, MC fast expand t v p thanks to Battletoast and cannon rushing PvP BECAUSE I CAN) But it felt good sucking because I knew I had things to improve on. It felt so good that I had to learn dozens of new timings, new mechanics and new play-style. Basically what I'm asking is what is the next step after you've reached close to your peak?
Can any squirrel help me? lol

you are nowhere near your peak if you have just reached masters. you may feel you are but there are always thing to improve in short you have to look at different aspects of your game play and learn how to abuse certain timings and make your build/builds better.

maybe slightly less obvious but I seriously doubt that you honestly can't find dozens of obvious and big mistakes in every game, even without looking too much in depth.

Starcraft is a great game because you can always keep improving. Even the top pros have lots of room for improvement in their play. You are still only winning 50%ish of the time against similarly skilled players so I don't understand how you can get bored because you 'can't improve'. I actually think once you get to higher levels, improving any more is a lot more fun, because the reasons you lose are (hopefully) not macro mistakes but rather things like your strategy, how you read and react to your opponent and how well you micro. Improving these things are a lot more fun and challenging in my opinion.

So keep playing keep improving and keep having fun!

You can always take a break. I went and played LoL (yes, my brain did start decaying) for a bit, and was within the top 25% of ranked players in the game within one month. The stupidity of that game served to only deepen my love for this one.

What everyone else said. Take a break and wait til that day when you inevitably get the itch back. If you're not trying to be competitive/go pro with your starcraft then there's no point playing when you don't enjoy it, you'll just end up making yourself hate the game. And it is, after all, just a video game.

Find your weakest match up and learn how to improve it / change it.

Its likely you need to just take a break though - pick up another game and play it 50/50 with sc2, if not completely.

Sounds like your skill has caught up to your knowledge of the game... if that makes sense xD

As most are suggesting, take a break from playing and perhaps spend your time learning the game. Plenty of things you can do without playing and I'm sure in time you'll realise that there's plenty you can work on.

Happened to me before, but I got bored not because I felt I am at the peak but I feel I do not improve fast enough...

I switched to playing 3v3s and 4v4s with my friends and it was awesome! Now I am back to 1v1s haha..

I think its good for players to have a game they play for fun, be it LoL, dota, WoW or whatever. If you are spending serious time trying to improve at SC2 having a game you play to unwind and have fun, not stress over is awesome.

You will come back to SC2 after a break and want to play, which is the best way to get better!

You guys all make playing starcraft 2 sound more like a horrible, tedious chore rather than a fun and exciting game.

If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong (pros excluded)

Hey dude

Basically what I do when I lose motivation is try to learn a new style of play. You say that you're struggling to stay interested and you cite the reason as not being able to focus on what mistakes you're making. I guarantee that you are making them, the best thing you can do if you find that you're struggling to improve is to have someone else go over your replays and see what you did wrong, and point out mistakes that you made. Whether or not they're able to tell you how to fix those mistakes is a different story, but once the problems are identified, that's almost certainly half the battle.

Basically I'd suggest trying new styles of play with zerg, maybe go for a more aggressive style, or more macro-oriented style based on what you play now. The best way to stay interested is to keep it exciting for yourself and find motivation. Right now my motivation is that I want to compete in tournaments vs masters level players, so I'm constantly looking to improve to play at a level where that's possible. Find a goal, play with that goal in mind. Analyse replays yourself, if you struggle to see where you went wrong, then find someone who's willing to look over it with you (say, over skype for instance) and see where you went wrong. I assume someone in Fs would be glad to do this with you

Hope I helped, GLHF !

I definitely think you need to find the fun in the game as well, the compettive aspect and how much you can always get better is why we still play this game and brood war, but it has to be fun or its a chore...

Off racing can definitely help that, taking a break is a good idea to.

You need to find the fun, if its in your own improvement, well here is no end, you can always improve.

If you just want to play the game without the pressure of "improving", play some team games, play fun games against the rest of us, maybe try coaching other players and gain your passion back that way.

What's fun is sitting in a Blizzard Booth in WCS and watching hundreds of people cheer for you. If you haven't done that, you haven't had your fun yet. Your motivation to not be bored is to have fun with StarCraft.

But of course I understand what you mean, I can never replicate the fun I had when I was getting better at this game, a 4-gate(or any other crappy strategy) just doesn't feel the same when you've finally admit/believe how God-awful of a strategy it actually is. But I enjoy a different kind of fun now - Although improving at a much slower pace than I was and watching the newer plays gain so much ground on me is disturbing. For me, beating crazy good people/being on camera/loling when my collosus army rips my opponents army apart because I'm Protoss is still damn fun!

- you have absolutely no commitments related to this game
- you are not enjoying playing this game.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist, as every other sane person has said, stop playing for a while, lol.

edit; just to add, if you're getting tired of the slow learning curve by the time you hit low masters, you're only going to get more and more bored as you progress.

Yep yep, I realised haha
I definitely should take a new approach to the game, not an 'I need to get better to go MLG' approach.

dont be so quick to take a break, every time i have taken a break i always regret it because when i start to play again i know how much i could have improved in the time i wasn't playing and you also have to get back to the skill level you once were not to mention the skill level of each league is constantly raising so you might not be masters when you get back.

you could try to find motivation somehow or if you do take a break try to play some sc2 each day or 2 even if its just team games or something more relaxed than 1v1.

If you're into it you could buy a new account and play Terran (or Protoss, if you absolutely must) and learn some more about the game through the eyes of another race. That way you'll get to have fun again in the lower leagues and you won't have to take any of it seriously.

Yeah dude just take a break. Play some other games like LoL, DotA, maybe some CS or anything really. After a while I found you start watching streams again and want to play "like them"

As soon as it becomes a chore to ladder, it's time to take a break.

I played Zerg as my main, was in and decided to make a push for and made a series of blogs about it, hit Masters league...

and then I was like, ok, now what?

I knew I wouldn't be able to invest the amount of time I would need to invest to push for GM (uni is a bitch, especially when you're from an Asian uni), so that was out of the picture. I was content sitting in Masters league, just displaying my big star. But then what? The game became dull when you have nothing to look forward to.

Then I began playing off-races. I played Protoss and Terran on my friend's account in BSG, and was losing to gold leaguers. I played more. I tried to improve more. I think I improved to the point where my off-races were at least plat level, perhaps Diamond.

Then due to a combination of being bored and real-life circumstances, I played less and less SC2 until I stopped playing eventually. That was about 6 months ago I think. I took a break from SC2.

Fastforward to 2 months ago. I began to check back into SC2SEA more. I began to watch some streams. Eventually, I purchased a copy of a game from this site (I didn't have my old account anymore, long story) and started playing again.

Right now, I play my main race on SEA, and play Random on NA. It keeps things fresh and interesting. When I came back to the game I was nowhere near the Masters league standard I was before, and had to learn from scratch again.

Today, I just hit Diamond again on SEA (I got Diamond pretty fast on NA for some reason), and I'm enjoying the game more than before. I played 20+ games yesterday, which is pretty high considering I used to play 5 ladder games or so before feeling mentally tired. I think I had a mentality change as well - it wasn't about chasing that rank, that league anymore. I just wanted to improve as a player in my different matchups, and challenge myself. Promotions will come, but if they don't, I'm fine. I'm enjoying playing the game again.

TLDR - Try playing off-races until you get too bored to even do that, then take a break, and come back in the future.
