Such negative responses. I like the ignorant jokes tbh because it gets people like my parents to get engaged into this sort of stuff, it's better to have little knowledge rather than none.

Ofc there would be people that could do a much better job, but that's what you get for watching free tv.

The problem is that ABC (especially programs like Foreign Correspondent) are meant to be completely unbiased in their presentation. If you watch programs like Media Watch, Four Corners and even the old 7:30 Report with Kerry O'Brien, you'll notice that they generally are well informed and focus on the truth instead of fear-mongering.

That's the unsettling thing, that the people who're meant to be seeing the full picture are still focusing on the ultra-negative aspect of things. Lest I sound too cliché, these are the people we have to win over before we can win over everyone else.

A number of murders and deaths have been assigned to the gaming obsession.

What the hell kind of journalism is that?

a number of murders and deaths have been assigned to going to school
a number of murders and deaths have been assigned to hospitals

you can put anything on the end of that statement and it is still mostly accurate.

I don't understand why everyone is so mad/dissappointed/whatever. It was a documentary on cyber warfare. The opening starcraft 2 feature was just a little background information on South Korean culture and had nothing to do with the actual story.

@Cheesy, I think its more the fact that they argued against esports in general, discussing all of the problems with it and focusing only on the negatives. Any portrayal of esports in a negative manner at this stage of the industries' growth is detrimental to where we might end up as a community.

you cannot be addicted to video games. i did my degree in programming and we explored this avenue. You cannot be addicted to games, addiction can be defined in may different ways but it comes down the the bodys reaction when you take the 'something' away. Nothing happens to the body of you simply take someone away from games cold turkey. They get angry, sure, this is emotion, they really LIKE to play video games, they dont NEED it like substances the body absorbs and then develops an addiction for it. You simply cant take a long time drug user off their drug, their body will shut down without it. Games addiction doesnt exist, its just a want to play and play and play. With countries like korea, people are making a living off it so the need to play play play is far more abused overall in those countries.

Well....
Yes you are right but there is more

See anything that happens to humans evokes a chemical response in the brain. When you win at a game then positive chemicals are released into the brain and the more you play the more you crave those chemicals.

So while it is still not an addiction there is more than just your want to play games.

The lack of those chemicals in your brain from lack of gaming creates a addiction like condition but isn't actually classed as addition.

That said, gaming isn't alone in this excessive sport, T.V, work and even sex produces these same conditions.

thats the argument we explored. Its not you NEED it, its the WANT to do it. Addiction means you simply cant do without it we came to define. You could take my case(and possibly this occurs in many of us in this forum). I cant live without starcraft i will say. My GF will tell me im addicted to it, but i go to work everyday, perform in a band(practice hrs for the gigs we play) look after my 2 kids, go to events and take the gf out . . . yes all the time i may be thinking about SC BUT . . . my body doesnt physically need that game to go on! but god do i love to come home and play the game for a few hrs ^^

the comment about sex is a good one, you dont need it but media has told us all that everyone is having it so people believe there is something wrong if they arent . . sex is a great example, is a really pleasurable thing and seriously. . who doesnt want to do that all of the time ^^

There are many different types of addiction, not all are substance dependent. I'm no expert in this field, not many people really are, but from my knowledge it's completely possible to become addicted to video games. From what I have read about video game addiction, it's quite rare. It's no where near as big an issue as say, gambling addiction.

I personally don't like the fact that video game addiction is a possibility. I'm not going to ignore it and pretend it doesn't happen when enough people say its worth looking into.

The point is this; it's still up for debate. People have died reportedly from video game binges. That alone makes it something to think about.

I think we can all agree however, that the media has a tendency to ignore that point and go full throttle at how it's destroying peoples lives without fully explaining the story. Too often I find a lot of ignorance in traditional media's reporting of video games, with a focus on spreading FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) instead of exploring the full story.

And, to your last point, there is a school of thought around sex addiction too.

TL;DR: I wouldn't write video game addiction off so quickly, there's still more research needed in this area.
