Now I think I'm really done with Diablo

Well, I thought I was done with Diablo after patch 1.03. Then I realized, I wasn't, I had unfinished business. I took him down to 25% in Phase 2 pre-1.03. I reckon if i tried harder and for a longer time, I could have downed him. Too bad I cannot brag about that.

Post 1.03
I did not use a single health potion. I could actually stand in the fire for a little while and still survive. His DoT debuff wasn't scary at all. The fight was, slow, unexciting and yawn inducing. I am not proud of this at all. But I guess I'm really done with Diablo now, except to check on my Auctions to get my money out.

ATM every single thread on the blizz forums is overflowing with hate over the new patch (mine included), and all with the same message regarding the lack of understanding by Blizzard as to why they have (or had) such a fan base for diablo.

They are effectivly designing their way out of buissness with their current focus and they need to forget about trying to line their pockets, and consider how they got to where they are.... through making games that are FUN!

Make us want to play the games... and the money will follow. They need to pull their head out of the clouds and listen to the fans. I am an old school gamer with money to burn and was in love with D1 & D2. Any such thing as fun that we all used to have playing the previous games is gone.

You hear that........Diablo just died and so did the little part inside of me that loved it.

I don't play many games, just ones that are nostalgic + Starcraft/Diablo franchises and yet I still don't see what the big deal is with posts like above o.o. I got my money's worth and I am not even 1/10 through the game haha.

I too am happy to have bought it, and as you have mentioned you are 1/10 throught the game. This franchise was not about just beating the game, it was about playing it over and over and over to get better gear and make you feel like you are getting more powerful, feel rewarded etc. It was fun....

So bring on the nerfs, bring on the balance, bring on the NEED to use the AH due to said nerfs...spend more time in AH then game. THIS is not diablo, any we all know it. Its a buisness decision by blizzard to make money, and if we find a way to reduce their money making abilty then they will nerf it. SIMPLE.

But, that being said... im sure there are people that will continue to pour there time into it and there is nothing wrong with that. That is what games are about... choice. For me however, it seems to be going in the wrong direction.

I guess I haven't got to the AH/Farm stage yet so I can't really comment haha.

One thing about replay ability is that you only really need 1 of each character, whereas in D2 there were 20+ builds for all the characters combined.

I'll have to wait and see, i'm playing like Flamga except i'm not bored, just need to get SC2 practice in/life sorted!

I think the biggest issue for me is the story, it just was not that great and I didnt feel enticed by it. Sure its prequel had a very basic story if you just played the game, but with what they had I sort of expected more. Sorta like the whole Duke Nukem: Forever thing but thankfully not as bad.

However the gameplay is amazing I will admit and very easy to play, but I suppose if comes back down to what you prefer. They took away my utter customisation, even if it generally meant you had an unplayable character >.< and honestly that and the story are what let it down for me.

I've never played any of the Diablo series because I'm relatively young but I feel my favorite part of the game is that I can play a RPG game solely with ONLY my friends and not with 200,000 other players online and it feels great to be able to join your friends off different quests and going back in quests without having to be bored.

I feel like the whole storyline really did not connect the best but I really liked the twist with Emperor Hakan II and Belial. Secondly, I like Flamga feel that Normal is super easy and could get boring but I feel like playing it casually without farming and etc is just the better way to go for Diablo. Obviously I can't compare D3 to any other games since I haven't had much exp in other games but I'm having a great time with my friends.

Sounds like a lot of people are burning themselves out on this game by playing it relentlessly. I'm still playing it every now and then when I get some free time and it's really enjoyable - even moreso when my housemate and I take the time to work out the best co-operative build/positioning to engage a really challenging pack of enemies.

The other thing is games need to have some sort of risk/challenge factor in order to stay interesting. If you just play softcore and there's no risk of ever losing, of course it's gonna get stale. It'd be like playing SC2 with invulnerability cheats on. If you're looking for a thrill/challenge, Hardcore is where it's at. It'll give you a whole new appreciation for the game as you make tactical decisions and risk evaluations each time you open a door.

I disagree with you Dox, and honestly I think you have a little bit of an elitist attitude towards softcore players. I'm happy you are enjoying your HC experience, but that is your opinion, and your opinion is not universal.

Softcore is where the replayability is. Most of the fun of this game is playing with friends, you NEED to have a group of people where you can logon and go 'Hey lets go farm X' and you can make a group and clear some stuff and get some loots.

Hardcore mode discourages getting in a game with 3 friends and clearing elites. It is SUPER risky and will most likely end in deaths. Most Hardcore farming is based around goblins and other safe ways to get items, which are not fun to me and do not provide a challenge.

Also, once PvP is released, Softcore with its majority of players will be the place to participate in it. Whilst I know hardcore chars will be able to PvP as well, most HC Inferno players have Softcore chars and will most likely PvP with them due to the larger player base. I know myself and some friends are anticipating that patch.

Back on topic however, If you want to keep playing this game, you need to make it a social experience, you need friends to play with and the game remains fun no matter how easy Blizzard make it.

I don't have any elitist attitude... I have a softcore character as well.

Nowhere in my post did I mention replayability - I only used the words thrill/challenge.

I never implied my opinion was universal, I was merely sharing my viewpoint.

Comparing Softcore to cheating, very definitive language and nowhere does it mention 'I think' or 'It is my opinion that'.

This is why I think you come across as elitist, a different choice of words in the future and a softer approach will convey your ideas a lot better without any attitude, whether it is implied or not.

I wasn't comparing softcore to cheating?? I don't know how you're struggling to comprehend what I wrote. I said the risk associated with playing softcore is like playing X game with invulnerability. Or unlimited lives. Or any other no-risk scenario you can think of.

And thus, IN MY OPINION, I can see why people would get bored with the game when it's all reward and no risk. One of the strongest fundamentals of game design is the delicate balance of both of these concepts. And that's not even my opinion, it's an industrial vertebrae.

Champi also kinda made a good point. You disagreed with my opinion/choice of words, and then proceeded to lay out your own assertions in the same format.

Personally, I have been playing Diablo 3 since release, anywhere from 8-12 hours a day, and the game has not changed for me and I have not lost interest.

I enjoy grinding games, I enjoy theorycrafting, I enjoy playing with numbers and working 5hours on end for a 0.5% mitigation increase.

RMAH didn't kill the game, people want to pay money for items to make their life easier then sure. Most of the Diablo gamers are old school D2 and D1 gamers who don't have the time to put in the farm to clear the game. (26+ year old people with full time jobs and families) Spending $20 here to cancel out 10hours of grinding is worth it to them.
Think about it, you work 8 hours a day ($30 an hour for example) gives you $240 right. You spend $20 - $30 on a piece of gear that otherwise would take you 3 hours of farming. Seems like a worthwhile trade right?

For people who are complaining about this patch, honestly who cares? You've cleared the game, there are other things you can do in the game. Level alts, play on HC, go achievement hunting. If none of this pleases you, then leave. you've spent $60 on the game and you've spent a lot of time on it seems like a worthwhile investment of fun / happiness. If you've sold items on the RMAH and made back your 'investment' then double props to you, why are you complaining?

Honestly, the game has just came out, you can't expect it all to be perfect especially from Blizzard, it just takes time, and because you payed once for the game and that is it. Should at least be happy that we are getting updates to the game.

I'm still not up to Diablo thanks to uni (assignments straight into exams for the bulk of the time since release)

However, I do feel like I worked hard getting close, and will be disappointed if that's the experience I have

The thing is though, I don't think that most people are going to be in the same boat.

There's this small snapshot of people who were late in the game, getting ready to kill Diablo. They nearly had all the gear they needed, they had their strats down, and it was just a question of executing. Now, the amount of gear they have simply trivialises the fight.

For someone who is just now coming through, sure they don't have to put in the same amount of effort in grinding as Cyanide has, but they will probably still hit Diablo with less than appropriate gear, and it will still take them time.

But yes, the whole thing seems very World of Warcraft-esque (everyone should be able to do everything, which includes killing inferno Diablo).

I absolutely love the idea of hardcore, and I've been following Kripp's stream a lot in the lead up to his Diablo kill. For me, it's just not an option with some crazy sporadic lag I've been getting (that doesn't seem to be me). If I slingshot back to the same place 5 times and lose my level 60 HC character, I think I would punch a baby. I mean, I can handle deaths if I do something wrong or even something stupid, and I don't get that worked up over it. But to die because of some kind of server instability is just not something I could handle, especially after (I think) they nerfed speed levelling.

Haha yeah, I always do a bit of a test run on a SC character just to test out the lag, just in-case. Had a few too many close calls!
