SEA Power Ranks Online Tournament System

What are SEA 'Power ranks'?

SEA Power Ranks is a new system started in December 2012. It's goal is to unite online SEA tournaments together in regards to seeding and adding a player ranking system to increase competition and give players something extra to aim for other than $ prizes. We shall use a standardised point distribution system based on variables such as prize pool to award points to partnered tournaments.

The Power Ranks will run for one season/year, and conclude with our SEA Championship Series, 2013 Grand Finale $1500+ for the top 32 players.

Cool! Hope to see more tournaments implement into the ranking, having the ACL points in the rankings would be awesome (altho they may have to be scaled etc.)

We won't be using any LAN tournaments, such as ACL, as part of our rankings. The SEA Power Ranks are only for online competitions. Reasons for this are LANS are only accessible to small sections of the SEA community, and some places like Sydney for example has a very active LAN scene, while others don't. Organisations like ACL, CityHunter, etc already have their own ranking systems, best suited to their local areas/circuit/tournaments. Online + Offline/LAN are different.

This is a fantastic initiative, thanks for putting it together Eddie!

I think you should include tournaments automatically which have a certain prize pool, e.g the 100$+ CyAC which just ran.

It should be one way meaning you do it anyway and include their tournament - without the need for an official "partnership". And then its up to the actual tournament organiser to decide if he wants to use seedings based on your ranking but he does not have too. Of course it will be better if he does.

It just gives the rankings more flexibility and accuracy because if something major like PAX does not want to partner you end up having a gaping hole.

I don't want to overstep, or intrude upon other tournaments. Their results/records/setup are their own, if they want to share them or not, it's their call.

PAX will be an offline LAN, so not relevant.

Hopefully most/all online tournaments want to unite with us. We already will have every wT weekly + Masters Cup, as well as a few other tournaments coming soon, so we shall have a lot of data to base our yearly rankings off.

SEA Power Ranking points are something extra, and free to add to a tournaments prizepool, plus with an established ladder and seeding system, makes any admins job easier.

I haven't talked to anyone from CyAC yet. They've only run the one cup so far, hopefully they'll have more to come, and we can work together then if they would like.

I think the title was misleading and he was confused to the SEA Power Ranks 2012.

It makes sense not to include lans to it, but what about online tournaments like ACL qualifiers and such?

Awesome stuff, but id suggest when seeding big tournaments from these rankings not to give points away towards these rankings to give others a chance to get themselves on or closer to the board. Last thing i want to see is the rankings being basically closed and impossible to get into because tournaments have given everyone on the board that many more points that no one who isn't on the board can catch up.

Great idea nonetheless.

Most likely no.

For example, ACL qualifiers act as ranking points towards the actual LANs, and should only be played by Australians.

IEM for example is open to the whole server, however the prize is a seed in an IEM, which given how far away they are, is really only a realistic option for a few sponsored players, and they should be the only one's playing in the qualifiers. Plus they use different stages/seedings for their brackets, so it's not one smooth cup/tournament.

Anything that is only targeted towards certain lan communities/countries and offers no $ prize, likely wont be included in SEA Online Power Rankings, as they will be associated with LAN events.

Not sure what you mean with your first sentence?

The end of year tournament will be open to 32 players. While some players may almost be locked in early, i expect competition for seeding/rank will be very competitive and exciting.

I think what he's saying is someone that comes into the competitive scene in June will be months behind and will take alot of high results to catch up.. Perhaps a regular reset or a decay of points..?

Like, you could reset points every 3 months but keep the record of points for a total of the year for the invitational thingy?.. idk.

It would be cool if we had a monthly update containing;
-The months tournament results for all tournaments with SEA power rank ( just show top3/4)
-'Player of the Month' for the player who received the most points for the month
-top10 sea power rank leaderboard with pluses and minuses showing how the top10 changed in the month

Just to make the power ranks more accessible and known the the community

Yeah i understand. 1 year is a long time.
Its something we can address mid season if required. Might re-set and use average points from each half to work out our top 32 for example. But for now we'll see how if goes.
HOTS will likely see an influx of new players and rankings shake up as well, so that's something to monitor.
Regardless, winning a big $ tournament, or placing highly in several late in the year should still give enough points to sneak into the lower part of top rankings.

Sadly no. A few reasons for this

-When it was first submitted the prize was only a dota 2 key, and our system only applies to cash prize tournaments. It wasn't changed until later.
-Also it was their first installment.
-The px admin team and myself hadn't locked in a SEA Rankings partnership
-It would be unfair to backdate points, as points may have attracted more people to the weekly 1 in the first place if they'd been announced beforehand, or if the cash prize was made known earlier.

Hopefully you'll win plenty more

BTW I've got my own spreadsheet setup for I refined from last year that includes all events (well, all that I find), plus it has a yearly decay. I'll put it up soon so people can keep track, and maybe events can use it for seeding. Sorry for the hi-jack!

edit: Pet, nice jab - i posted because multiple people are talking about it in the thread
