I just watched this video regarding gals getting bullied in games, and so I was wondering if this happens in SC2. As this game has so few gals playing, are there enough trolling players to deter them from playing this game.
No, I think everyone get's bullied on the net, but instead of "You suck die in a fire/******/any other insult" it comes in the form of "you're a girl get in the kitchen" etc.
I think it's no co-incedence that Xbox and Xbox Live features prominently in the first half of this video. Even die hard Xbox fans will tell you that it's not a pleasant place :P I've personally been threatened on it hundreds of times.
Regarding SC2, it's no where near the scale of harassment you'd see on XBL but it's there. I would argue it's the same for everyone not any particular sex.

never really played much XBL games so no idea, but I guess SC2 is ok. Esp on random team games if some1 threatens me too badly esp on the same team id just force attack on their base. lol
being a man, i cant really say if it happens or not, i would never harrass someone because of their gender. starcraft 2 is a harder game than that of CoD and halo, and so i think our player base is more intelligent and wont bully people like this, ofc there will still be a few dicks, but never to the same scale as other games.
i do think that girls will be treated differently always in games, being negative or positive, just because they will always be the minority. hopefully there will be some awesome pro girl gamers to win at tournaments to show everyone that they can play just as well as any guy ^ ^
just some quotes from the piece i thought i would address =P
"talk to any girl who plays online and they will have negative stories to tell you." no talk to anyone who plays online.
"desrciption of genitalia" that'd be those 12 year olds.
Girls dont get bullied more, they get the same amount as everyone else. I get multiple sexual offers of a violent nature when I play on NA, this is not due to my gender, its just a popular insult. People insult you to get a reaction, so of course girls get something tailored to them. Telling a female that her penis is of inferior size isn't really going to achieve much compared to a male counterpart. This video was just bad "journalism" if I can even call it that. Girls bully online too, the harshest comments I have received online have been from female gamers.
It's shit like this that actually hurts females in the community. This constant separation of females from males, the idea that females are weaker and will be picked on etc.
Everyone gets given shit on the internet, everyone gets given shit in life, some people may target women more, I don't deny that, but in Starcraft II MOST of the people I have come across don't give a shit what gender you are and would never go out of their way to discriminate solely against women over men, they will just BM whoever.
I am so sick of this notion that women have it hard in esports. I have had issues sure, but I don't honestly think it would be that different if I was a male either. We are pretty bloody lucky in SCII and especially in SEA with the way people are generally treated equally, but we do need to stop with this idea that women are poor preyed on defenseless things being attacked and bullied because they are weak.
personally i think people need to harden the **** up.
Idiots will use anomnity to make stupid remarks, to troll or torment people, but if your smarter then your average 8 yr old you should be able to figure out, they cant do a ******* thing.
I've ONLY laughed at people that have raged at me.

I remember back in 2010 there where some rather harsh comments about some female casters along the lines of she is only there for the female voice etc. However I would say that SEA due to its tight nit community was reasonably quick to let these people know it was not reasonable to voice those thoughts. Once you get to broadcasted competition levels people tend to let the game play speak for the player more so than anything else. I would say a female playing starcraft would receive the same game related harassment (away from the game they are likely to get some unwanted attention from would be suitors, which may or may not be considered harassment).
I would say the place SC2 fails at undue female harassment would be in the casting side of things (although there is a unjustified and some justified thoughts expressed towards a lot of casters) females tend to get some rather inappropriate comments made about them. I think this is mostly because people like to judge a book by its cover and most skilled female sc2 players have some very close friends which are known skilled male sc2 players and people will jump to wrong concussions before they know what they are talking about.

There are 10 people who understand binary. Those that do and those that dont.
I had never came across any bullying in Starcraft 2 ever since I started playing. Majority of Starcraft 2 players are well-mannered as compared to certain games.
Yeah everyone definitely bears the brunt of BM no matter their gender and it's not just part of the game as it regularly goes too far. I think there might be people that will focus BM/personal attacks on women more, like they'll be more persistent in BM, however in the end their animosity will be directed at anyone around them regardless of gender. Trolls just like to have something personal to attack you with, that's why they use family, sexual orientation or gender in BM attacks to try to get a reaction from you. Just walk away or shrug it off because in the end there's little you can go do reason with anyone like that. Being removed or shunned from a community they want to be a part of is really the only way to help these kinds of childish people see the error of their ways in my opinion.

with the exception of voice chat most people won't even know if they are up against a woman. Although this shields them from harassement it makes it seem all the more unusual when someone who is identifiable as a woman comes on (whether from a feminine sounding name or just correcting gender specific pronouns).
I think the overall maturity of SC2 players is greater than most games. Some part of it may be that at the top we have players who are relatively mature with regards to race and gender (probably a mixture between their own maturity and the lynch mob that would happen if they said somethinig racist/mysoginistic) and some of that behaviour trickles down.
There is still a lot of objectification of any female in SC2 though.
about half the comments here for example http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/co...rview_heatmap/
or read comments on ANY interview by Rachel Quirico who does a lot of the interviews (and does a real good job of it)
SEA is better but I'm reminded of a thread on SEA forums of a masters girl looking for other diamond or higher girls to play with where a guy chimed in to tell her that women don't have what it takes to be good at computer games (he was in silver league! I just had to laugh at that one)
I dun generally get much abuse about being a female player. Friendly banter and teasing maybe.
Though once ages ago I was queuing for the custom game, Phantom II and somehow the topic rose that a female player admitted she was female and a guy could not stop talking about female players and a youtube link about how a female player was so noob she attacked her own buildings or allies or something like that. The other female player I was in the game with was not amused. Neither was I.
Anyways we got into game and at some pt I had to leave early. So I used my whole army, sweet vengeance and destroyed him. Turns out I won because he was the phantom.
aweee Sis
you know we not getting bullied for sure ^^
how many sc2 friendly guys we got! they willing helping girls play better n carry during games ^^.thats how im from bronze all the way to plat in few months
i appreciate guys from sc2 n we r good friends even in different countries or cities
Guys on the internet are sad fucks. This will never change, but the good thing about sc2 is that its really easy to remain anonymous, I might have lost to 0 girls on battlenet or hundreds, I have no idea. So long as they dont call themselves XxXDxIaMGhURlLoLXxXDx I dont really see the issue. The only girl I know that i've ever played was megumixbear because she is known in the community,
Kind of ironic the thread title is gals. Make me smile, kinda shows that you're already thinking of them differently. Girls are going to get hit on or abused in any online game because online games are full of creepy losers many of which have a vendetta against women. Just a fact, dont think our community is pure and different, just look at screddit. The great thing about this game is you can pick a generic name, no-one knows who the **** you are and you are judged on your skill. I think women getting regularly abused in sc2 are probably just drawing attention to themselves unnecessarily, kind of like if my name was Ilikedicksupmyasslol
