In the future, I may want to cast games I deem to be interesting enough strategically to be casted. But, I dont know the software to be used.
What I know I'd need for casting replays:
- A video recorder
- Windows movie maker (At least)
- Audacity (Sound)
- An overlay for the replay timer, where a logo can be placed
- A program to split the video into 10 minute parts for youtube
But I really dont know anything beyond that. I have a microphone and probably all the stuff I'd need to do casting apart from the actual software. Seeing as there is a community of competent casters here, Im just going to throw the following questions out in the open:
What do you use and why?
or
What do you reccommend and why?
Alternatively, point me in the right direction. Anything helpful will do.
Edit: Oh, and dont worry about my amount of experience, I am currently low in the leagues so I dont think I'd have a good enough reputation to start casting as people wont trust my opinions based off that alone. I'll probably wait until Im around gold league, which WILL happen.
Apart from that, I see analysing games as one of the strongest parts of constructively playing starcraft, not just endless laddering.
i used to wonder how too. after speaking to hdphoenix on yesterday's chat, this is what is needed.
Hardware:
1. Microphone
2. If you don't want to show your face, a webcam isn't needed
Software:
1. Fraps
- this is free software, and has an ingame recording function. very easy to use.
2. Rendering software
- this is not needed if you just want to cast and show at home to your friends later on
- but if you want to put it on youtube, you must have it to compress the video
- the one hdphoenix said he uses is sony vegas
I am in the process of doing up a guide like this but it is still a week or so away from completion, if your willing to wait that long itll be pretty comprehensive

That would be excellent, and Im not in any rush.
Also, I believe I saw a thread or two about how to set up streams on TL, but I dont know if I'll be getting into streaming myself, although co-casting live games over skype is a possibility.
I have a webcam as well, but Im kinda on the edge about showing my face or not. Im not scared to show my face, Im just pondering if its worthwhile, :P
Fraps for video and sound recording
Sony Vegas for Rendering and breaking up the video into sections
Photoshop to create an overlay to put as a layer into Vegas.
Thats for non live casting (youtube), Live casting is a little more difficult and specific to which livestream/ustream etc service you use.
