so whats the deal with these games now. is it still a case of gotta catch all 600 of them? how friggin many are there now? Is it evenly remotely balanced? I remember the first couple of generations was basically just ghost and phsychic, nothing else required except from TMs for travel.
Yeah, I've been holding off on a 3ds for this hahah.
I think there are about 650ish at the moment. Honestly, the games stick to a pretty rigid formula, but generally get better with each installment (excludin R/S for me, those ones were boring).
The competitive scene is entirely community ran. This is a good thing. Pokemon are classified into different tiers, so it keeps things pretty balanced. I don't play competitively, but it's actually very in depth, far more than most people would think before looking into it.

I was a competitive player in 4th gen, it's actually really hard, the top players are really strong, perhaps the greatest part was Oceania always would win the "nation wars", I unfortunately didn't make the team the year I tried out. But it was great seeing the Aussies and Kiwis dominate.
I personally haven't played Black and White and still haven't finished heart gold. Perhaps I might get the new game for my brother when it comes out and borrow it now and then.

Azz had a chance at this one point in the game where he had a nexus and 6 probes. But he found a way to **** it up from there 3 times in a row - Iaguz
But like B/B2/W/W2 I doubt I'll get into it like I used to, and leave the game hanging around the 3rd badge or something again. But it looks really great.

Hey guys, I dunno if you're familiar with Game Grumps, but it's basically two best friends, Egoraptor (creator of the Awesome series) and Jontron (Game reviewer) playing games and laughing about stuff together. Kind of like a let's play, except a lot funnier.
I'm currently going through their playthrough of Pokemon Emerald. Really funny stuff.

I was a competitive player during 4th gen as well. Got pretty far in OSL/SPL (lol, what are the odds) beating the likes of FrostiePixie, TheKillerNacho and even Xerxes at times. Once Black/White came out though the competitive scene went to shit
Will probably still get a 3DS just for these titles, though. Glad to see something fresh! 3DS consoles are pretty cheap these days (in comparison) so hopefully by the time X/Y come out I'll be able to pick one up for under $200

I used to play semi-competitively in diamond and pearl, but a while after heart gold came out I lost interest in it, I only recently got to play black and white but I don't think I will get competitively involved this time.
But given X/Y being 3D and my history with the series, Nintendo might as well take my wallet for its next release.
Also as a side note, does anyone else think the X/Y names are a reference to the X/Y chromosomes? :S

Pretty sure they are. If you look at the Japanese logo, there is a double helix. Hopefully like Black and White, the names are actually relevant to the plot. Maybe nature vs nurture? Hmm
That would be good, I noticed black and white had a (slightly) more interesting plot, bringing up the idea of different people and different perspectives, so if they could touch on genetics and the nature/nurture argument it would add a lot of depth (for me at least) to the game

I would really love it if, for the first time in a Pokemon game, they don't touch things that have ANYTHING to do with FRIENDSHIP, LOVE, BEING THE BEST OF THE BEST etc.
Also, more player-to-NPC interaction would be awesome, as in, Persona-esque player to NPC interaction.
