I am quite an idealist, always believing people can change for the better and was really reluctant to ever ban someone from the forums. This morning however, i sadly had to make my first ban after giving the said person repeated warnings.
The site gets a good deal of hits nowadays and as our community grows if it isn't moderated to a acceptable standard and admin warnings aren't respected:
1) New visitors will be turned off thinking this site isnt well moderated therefore not well run.
2) Sponsors (i am in talks with two at the moment) want a positive professional environment to be associated with so we have to maintain a certain standard and if the talks go through you can look forward to some well sponsored tournaments coming soon.
We need a transparent and fair set of rules, to make it easier for moderators (Mezza, Jazcie, skybreaker, sheepy, kelly, Torniquet, phoenix) to maintain an acceptable standard on the fourms.
UPDATE:
Infractions have been too lenient and now there is an updated system in place to deal with alot of the unconstructive QQing, silly new threads and return of the trolls.
What does it all mean?
Warnings:
These are exactly what they are called as they dont give you any infraction points but warn you that you have made a infraction and will receive points only if you make the same mistake again. So dont feel too bad but please dont make the same mistake.
Infractions:
Basically any of the offenses gives you points depending on its seriousness. Infractions points expire after 30 days after they are given and you will have a clean slate after that.
Auto-Ban:
If you reach a certain number of infraction points before they clear, you will be temp banned for a certain time period.
5 Infraction points = 3 day site ban which will automatically be lifted after that period
7 Infraction points = 7 day site ban which will automatically be lifted after that period
If you commit a very big offense, you will be permernantly banned from the site, and if you still persist and make new accounts with similar behaviours, you will be IP banned and unable to even view the site.
Basically how this works is you are given infractions (warnings + points) for breaking these rules and your post is deleted/edited.
In the past i just used to delete/edit the posts without giving infractions, and instead PMing members individually to behave themselves, hoping they could change for the best. Silly me.
So making a thread titled "IMBA STUPID GAME" instead of "PvT Blue Flame harrass help" gives u 1 infraction point which expires after 10 days.
8 points added up gives you a 3 day site ban.
12 points added up gives you a 7 day site ban.
Points expire 30 days after they are given
Users with a long history of infraction points will be looked at and banned.
Additionally, at anytime moderators can dish out 3day / 7 day temp bans and permanent site bans.
I feel these rules are quite lenient. Maybe i should also make a "flaming kelly unconstructively" infraction.
Based on feedback and how this turns out, i might make adjustments to improve the system.
Chatbox Issue
Finally, i have been given alot of feedback and also myself noticed that chatbox has become a troll fest over the last 1-2 months. As a result i actually made it smaller for a day or 2 and if things continue at this rate i might remove the chatbox entirely. However, i changed it back because i felt the chat box was one of the distinctive features of the site and it used to be a fun place to hang out.
In the past i would just leave my browswer on the whole day at work and every once in a while pop back in to see what was going in, chatting frequently with regulars like phoenix/mezza/jaczie/torniquet/tze,potthead,zeion,glade,xeen who now all seem to avoid using it.
I want to bring this warm feeling of using the chatbox back to people who have told me how much they used to enjoy it and so after reviewing the chatbox logs i have personally pmed some individuals and if they continue to troll, they will be banned from the chatbox, as simple that.
BSG Smurfing Issue
We want to make the BSGs an enjoyable experience for lower league players who can still have fun playing in a competitive tournament.
However, every now and then some sad douche who can't win tournaments at his own level (be it the GPD or CO) derives fun in smurfing in the BSG and taking easy wins at the expense of BSG players. We want to encourage BSG players to become better and more competitive but this ruins the fun so we will be very strict from this moment on.
From this point foward the following behaviour will result in an instant irreversible permenant site ban:
1) Registration with multiple accounts for the same tourney.
All accounts get perm banned, and your characterid.code will be blacklisted.
2) Anyone above BSG level of play caught smurfing, with a skill standard clearly above a BSG players level.
This includes using a friends account or having a higher then BSG level on NA and playing on SEA with your BSG account.
The end.
Laying down the law and making sc2sea a better place one step at a time!
love,
Nirvana

EDIT: please don't make a 'leaderboard' like that unpleasant fellow suggested, it would just give these digusting trolls, whom I despise, something to achieve.

nice (: always needed this feature. if this site is growing, should implement other categories (like not sc2 related), so it feels more like a community website.
Thats all well and dandy but as human beings we all tend to be biased and "corrupt", do you have any methods or guidelines in which you moderate the moderators? i.e. making sure that if they do ban/warn a person it is actually for the correct reason and not because they do not agree with said person?
Just wondering.
EDIT: Also is there a way for us to see how many points we are on? individually that is so that no one can see if I have any points or what not, just so that i/whoever will know when to stfu and start posting better or what not.

Reason: Added a question in the EDIT: part
I'm in full support of nirvana's decisions. Honestly it took quite awhile and quite alot of stuff from him to bring about such changes because he's seriously quite tolerant, just so you guys know.
And here's something obviously obvious that some people obviously need reminding. If, by your own yardstick, and at some corner of your mind, you have SOME inkling that what you're saying/posting even remotely sounds wrong/discourteous/unacceptable, it probably is.
If you have no idea, then let the infraction/ban system guide you. But once it starts, you'd better learn fast.

May I purchase you a sarcasm detector? You are in urgent need of one.
User has been warned for this post. Warnings do not do anything other than serve as a reminder not to make such posts.
This system sounds good, however I think one thing could possibly be adjusted. Above it claims that a thread made in the wrong forum will net someone a ban. Personally ( I don't know about others), I see this as being a possible deterrent to people when they post. It could be seen as a punishment for what could be a mistake or accident. Will users be able to see the infractions/reasons for infractions on their account page?
On another note, I am unsure about whether or not the 'instant temp bans' are given out because of an accumulation of points or whether they are given out for something else and then the points are added on to what the user already has. Clarification on this would be great, however the idea of the infraction system is quite good and will help to lessen the amount of trolls/keyboard heroes that destroy the site.

ure reading it wrong. if he makes a wrong post he will be given 1 point infraction (very lenient) and this 1 point expires in 10 days so it goes back to 0. but if in that 10 days he accumulates a total of 8 points he gets 3 day TEMP ban, 12 points 7 day TEMP ban. yea i believe users can see their infraction points (at least i can see the points they are sitting on) but if they cant they can always check their PMs which they get automatically sent when they receive an infraction and tally up their points.
its actaully pretty hard to get perm banned but i might make the rules stricter depending on how things to.
No more qq for Aean, no more trolling for DRFT and Tom, no more emphasis swearing for me. Tasteless Sexual References gone, no more calling Tastosis gay? D:
how many points does an admin editing a forum goers opinion rack up for said admin?
well im the only one who was doing that, and it was basically just to you/del changing negative stuff to positive stuff like "sg accents sux" etc into "i love singapore" etc. for everyone else i have only removed expletives from their posts.
yea but im still undecided if i should just simply delete the post or continue editing it this way, because in the past if i deleted it del would just repost the same thing and you guys are my friends too so its alot funnier this way ^^
