Hey guys,
Looking for a bit of input into what the most important factors of the game are and how to instill good playing habits. These are obviously general rules of play for use up to the platinum level. Past that point you know the rules well enough to break them or bend them as required.
As many will know and have said the most important things to be doing are making money and spending money. As such the first rule of Starcraft is:
It is also a game of information lead to the next two things:
2) Keeps eyes on the mini map, know what your opponent is doing
3) Build the right things
With all these things it becomes a game of execution, getting the micro right:
4) Execution
What I'm looking for is input and elaboration to see an evolving set of priorities and a way for new players to target basic skills to improve the most important areas of the game. Please guys love some feedback and your input. Please keep discussion relevant and to the point.
I think you have the right idea man. I don't think it's too important to have a set list of specific priorities. You can break down each thing you said to smaller goals then just focus on that for a game. eg. don't get supply blocked all game. Or build workers non stop and if you have too many just expand. OR spend a game staring at the minimap.
At the moment i focus on expand an macro. hoping that i will get the idea of aggression down pat later on. So if you see me on ladder assume im going a fast expand.
I tend to teach people the "four pillars of starcraft". Taught in order the first is mechanics, the ability to input commands efficiently using hotkeys and command groups always. Then macro, worker creation supply and the ability to spend money without over queueing production. Third is decision making, basic build orders a standard approach to playing a game and some reactions to common low mmr strategies. The last is micro in which we teach people to a move.
Focus on one thing each game to do better. The way i first started playing the game was my number 1 goal is getting to 3 bases with perfect economy.
So everygame id make sure i wasn't getting supply blocked and getting to 3 bases of economy,
From there i added things in so the second step was ok now i want to have say 3 gates per base before expanding. While no't dropping the worker production.
Notice in these there is no attacking, thats because my rule would be to never attack before i had my goals. this would ensure i was learning strong macro mechanics.
Losing and winning is irrelevant at the start. if you work on the basic mechanics and get them super strong you will win games to masters easily.
I've just come back and I was only doing these things to get masters back. IF you get stuck or need another aim after you get this sorted send me a message, im more than willing to set targets for players and help improvement #CoachStally
Also for reference Cabracaan was my orginal coach so listen to his advice should help. His 4 pillars write up was quite good
