After speculation regarding the future of own3d following revelations that it had been unable to pay some partnered streamers for several months, it has been announced on the official own3d blog that it would cease operations effective January 31st citing increased competition and an inability to secure more capital. In a statement attributed to the own3d staff, they had the following to say:
Quote:
This is a difficult decision for all of us at own3D. However, after much deliberation this seems to be the best course of action despite the impact it will have on all the employees, clients and partners who helped build this business.
We are grateful for your support as our pioneering ride comes to an end. The own3D team has always aspired to provide the gaming community with the best tools for sharing their gaming experiences and growing their projects. We therefore hope that you have enjoyed watching a few epics over the years.
The day has almost arrived when professional gamers are as recognized as other athletes. We hope to have shown what is possible for the future of eSport and competitive gaming.
The gaming revolution will not be televised - it will be streamed.
It was also reported that in an interview with Own3d COO that VODs would be unavailable within 24 hours of them shutting down the service so content creators were advised to download them for archive purposes using addons like Video Download Helper for Mozilla Firefox
My experience with own3d was much much better than twitch on every level for a good year while I was in Korea but twitch made better choices and got the upper hand
From what I understand own3d was never profitable for them
Although I personally prefer Twitch, its still a little sad to see them shut down. The more competition and outlet for people to get involved in gaming the better if you ask me.
I remember early 2011 I use to prefer own3d as with my crappy net connection 240-360 streams was a lot seemed a lot higher quality & smooth.
Twitch then did something, and everything changed around mid 2011. Where my same crappy net can now watch 480-720 on good days. I remember on DJwheat's real talk he said something on the lines of "Twitch is the most advanced streaming technology, no one is even close". From there own3d felt vastly inferior to Twitch.
I have disliked own3d from the moment they started business. However, their uprising did force twitch to something. Now, twitch is back to the monopoly and I hope that own didn't shut down.
Own3d always provided a very smooth stream for me. Twitch often lags at high bitrate 1080p, Own3d never did.
Sad to see it go, it's pretty disappointing to see such a good service fall so low.

I'm hopeful that once Azubu and YouTube develop their streaming services that healthy competition will be the result.
Now that own3d.tv has ceased operating, the following users have streams that no longer go anywhere. If you are one of these people and have now switched to Twitch, please reply to this post with your new stream link to have it reconfigured. Any remaining own3d.tv streams will be removed soon (of course you can still re-apply for a new one).
