Basically, I thought we could start an apprentice programme.
Something where some of the higher level players in the clan, could take a lower level player of the same race, under their wing.
It wouldn't have to be as formal as coaching, where you sit for an hour and teach. I am thinking more along the lines of a buddy system.
Here are some ideas:
- The apprentice could send replays to the Mentor for analysis or discussion etc.
- Apprentice could invite the Mentor to obs one of his games now and then - for on-the-go feedback.
- Any simple questions could be asked to the Mentor , e.g "How do I FFE on Shattered Temple?".
I hope everyone can get the idea of what I'm thinking. It's basically it would be a system where dedicated lower level players could receive some more specific help.
Obviously it couldn't be expected to be on the same level as paid-coaching, since that is quite time consuming for the coach, and our higher level players need to spend time growing themselves .
We would need some way to pick/cycle through apprentices, as I'm sure a lot of people would 'want' to be an apprentice.
Potential Mentors should have the following qualities:
- be patient
- be skilled (duh).
- able to articulate ideas well.
- driven to improve themselves.
- be polite.
- willing to put some time aside to mentor apprentices.
- able to accept criticism from lower skilled players. (Apprentices should be able to give you a 'review' after they've finished being your apprentice. So you can learn how to teach better too )
Potential Apprentices should have the following qualities:
- be patient
- be willing to accept criticism (duh).
- be polite.
- willing to stick to some form of practice regime.
What are your guys thoughts?
How should we decide who is fit to be a Mentor (being skilled doesn't always mean you're a good teacher).
How should we decide who gets to be an Apprentice?
How often should we rotate?
Mentors: Reply with race, account name, code (SEA) as well as what leagues you are comfortable coaching.
Apprentices: Reply with race, account name, code (SEA) as well as your league.
If a Mentor accepts an Apprentice, please reply to the thread so I can update
Personally I think this is a really good idea and could help with the growth of the team's players! Good initiative Trusty
EDIT: Even if it wasnt necessarily just 1 mentor, but a group of mentors overseeing a group of people from the same race. For instance, GM/Masters Mentors for Protoss getting together with the Protoss players from ToR and having a discussion/group replay analysis together. It could help to overcome the obstacles that most people have at their level, and it would be easier as less problems will be missed.

thats a really smart idea one of the reasons my play improved so fast when i picked this game up is a had a coach/mentor/friend that helped me a lot +1 to this idea and rep to trusty for being such a handsome stud
For now I think I'm a would be apprentice (although I'm happy to give some mentoring to some bronze players, since it's just mentoring - I do think proper coaching should be done by dia+) but I would really appreciate and value this sort of thing.
I feel like I am making huuuge steps in a lot of areas, and I feel a ton better, but there are some little things holding me back. The sort of things that would be perfect for this sort of thing to address!
One day, I'd be happy to mentor others properly too :P
ToR just keep on getting more awesome with this kind of ideas..
Go ToR !!
