Its here...
While Maynarde and I haven't officially nutted out the format - we are going to have them to decided the grand champion of Tier 5. I'm writing to inform you of the proposed format and ask for your constructive feedback to develop a finalised playoffs system.
The format
- at this stage will involve an extra match (so there are no draws) (5 gates worth 1 point, 1 ace match worth 2).
- Playoffs will involve 5 teams, 1st to 5th..
Week 1:
1st has a Bye
2nd vs 3rd (Match A)
4th v 5th (Match B)
Loser of match B is out - gg.
Week 2:
Winner of Match B vs Loser of Match A (Match C)
Winner of Match A vs 1st (Match D)
Winner of Match D goes to Grand Final
Loser of Match C is out - gg.
Week 3:
Winner of Match C vs Loser of Match D
Winner goes to Grand Final
Week 4:
Grand Final. Winner Wins.. Loser is out, comes 2nd.. gg wp'd.
This format can be compressed to a shorter period if needed. and match time for all matches (excluding Grand Final) can be played when ever - with the GF on a set date (probably a weekend) and streamed by... someone?... I favour this format because it rewards teams final placement and gives teams an incentive to fight right to the end of the season!...
Note: I think I wrote everything right, but that format is confusing to write down.. T_T
Suggestions pls!?..
Additional Note
The maps for SEAL Tier 5 have been selected using the following format, each map is played 1st and as the Ace map once for the season.. however, there are 10 maps and 11 weeks..
So I'm asking you guys to vote on your favourite map(s) - If you guys let me know via PM your top 5 maps in order I'll work out the final map.. it will either be - 1st most popular played as ace and next top 4 randomly to the other matches, OR Most popular map will be first map for ALL rounds of the final week!..
Additionally, similar polls will be taken from the teams in the playoffs to determine the maps for the Playoffs..
TA better win this or ill be pissssedd . Lucky ToR took out QED, otherwise 1st place could've gone to them and it looks like first place will have a huge advantage.
I agree with Arnor, I would love to see this done over 2 weeks like so:
Week 1:
1st has a Bye
2nd vs 3rd (Match A)
4th v 5th (Match B)
Loser of match B is out - gg.
Winner of Match B vs Loser of Match A (Match C)
Winner of Match A vs 1st (Match D)
Winner of Match D goes to Grand Final
Loser of Match C is out - gg.
Week 2:
Winner of Match C vs Loser of Match D
Winner goes to Grand Final
Grand Final. Winner Wins.. Loser is out, comes 2nd.. gg wp'd.
So middle 3 teams all play 2 games in week 1, while the last place and first place teams after round 1 each play 1
Also! Can I please request if you are choosing maps by poll, it's a bit more effort but can you poll at least 1 popular map by race please? I am speaking as one of very few Terrans in this league. Toss and Zerg are imba enough as it is, they don't need the best maps too!
Also, if it's too confusing, you could take the top 6, and top 2 teams get byes while 3rd-6th play an extra round, which would keep it a very easy to follow bracket. Personally, I don't mind, and am enjoying playing for a spot in the top 5.

I like the format except for the extra game. Teams are already struggling to get their players on at the right time, hence the increased number of reschedules towards the end of the season. I feel that just making all matches 1 point so effectively having no ace match would be a better option, as it will still give 5matches so there is a chance most teams can get their players on within the week.

I actually really agree with this. IMO, take the ace out of the finals, don't play an extra match
Another thing to consider - is us little kids down in tier 5 will have time to twiddle our thumbs while Tier 1/2 players are playing out the SEASL (1v1 tournament) - There will also be a "All Stars Invitational" or Team Ace Invitational tournament scheduled afterwards.. more details coming soon.
@Breadfan - Thats exactly what I envisaged as the answer to "this format can be compressed to a shorter period..."
@Breadfan - democracy is against the Terrans - oh well ... I'll be considering these things, don't worry.. and it is only the 'starting' map..
@Potthead - if the Extra match becomes an issue for teams to fill the roster - I would prefer allowing a player to play twice in the line up (in two of the 1 point games) rather than reduce the Ace game to 1 point.... Other than that - give me your suggestions?
My personal thought is re: the ace match being 1 point...
This is the finals man. Everyone who made it is totally baller. Players who go out on the night to play for the team, they're all aces. They'd have to be to make it to the finals against the fierce competition we've seen. I mean, look at the lineups of the teams outside of the Top 5. There is some HUGE talent down here. So don't think of it as the ace is gone, but rather that all games are aces in the finals, baby!
Also, I dunno, there's something a lot more satisfying about winning more games than the opposing team than there is about winning the same number as them, but getting awarded the win because one of the matches you won was determined to be worth more. I think all sports leagues in the world with the luxury of being able to play a series of 3/5/7 games (basketball/baseball/etc) choose to do so, rather than end the match with a luck-of-the-draw penalty shootout/penalty countback/whatever. Only the sports that don't allow for this option need to go with another method.
All Stars Invitational sounds awesome, I was actually going to suggest this but heard you guys had something cooked up. Totally excited
Ace match = Tactics.. having the Ace match breeds more tactics to be implored in the matches..

All games worth 2 points?..
Unless there is serious objection - there will be an Ace to continue the current format and an additional match will be introduced to determine the winner.. but with an extra match, the Ace inherently becomes less important..
I've always been under the impression that having 2 points allocated to the ace matchup makes the other games almost meaningless in comparison.
When you can win 8 games out of 12 and still only get a draw, this just seems wrong to me.

This may or may not be true.. but it is the format we have been given to work with.. and will be the format in the Playoffs..
having 5 matches worth 1 and 1 match worth 2 does devalue the ace match significantly - to win, a team needs to win at least an equal number of matches.. and the Ace match - which is inherently a tactical match to develop more strategy in matches..
Take for example the recent TA v QED Krrn... Edarus and I spent a bit of time working out the likely QED Ace - as Schnitzel.. and knew that his weakest match up was going to be when we force him to off race - as he has elected to play ZvP rather than PvP - so send a Protoss at him, however - we were going to send our best player MarineFifty - a Zerg, but that would have given Schnitzel a favourable match up... Therefore we knew we needed a Protoss Ace and Edarus stepped up to the plate to take on the Zerg Ace of Schnitzel... This tactical planning would not have been possible if there was no Ace match.
This is why it will take a lot to convince me to remove the Ace match.. the tactics of this match make the games more dynamic.
However, having an extra 1 point match will lessen the effect of the Ace match somewhat and mean there is no chance for draws.

You retain this just by having the cap on plats and the requirement of sending players out in order of league.
So now, instead of just being about a single game, you have 5. Managers need to look at the 3 plats a team has, determine their races, and think about who is most likely to play where. They also need to consider their own team and think to themselves... Are any of these maps, for example, a "zerg" map, and if so will they just gameplan for me putting a zerg on the map, therefore I'll play a protoss.
Honestly, i love the way the planning of teams adds to the dynamincs of the match, but I don't think you lose that. I honestly think a Bo5 is better than a blind pick tiebreaker for all involved.

In fact if 3 games went 2 - 0 to team A and the other 3 (inc Ace match) went 2 - 1 to team B, this would result in a 9 - 6 game lead for Team A and a win overall for Team B, 4 points to 3.
This is games though, not matches as you have pointed out.

Just wanted to point out that mathematically, Team A still has 150% the wins of Team B, the only difference now is that Team B wins rather than draws.
Of course that's all just theory and I will definitely be pleased to have the chance to play in whatever is decided and as always I sincerely appreciate the effort that goes in each week behind the scenes.
