Due to the popularity of the last preview here’s my quick review of the City Hunter Starcraft II Kingston Comp #3!
FOR THE SWARM!
City Hunter's last event was inflicted by the infestation that is Zerg, taking the top 6 places, this time around 3 of Kerrigan's finest return: xGKingMaFia, GoSutgun and TtPiG. Add to that the up and coming talents of xGKingpokerface, SQLTtNinja, xGKingMyuu and cruxEldrid it looked likely SEA will be subjected to many ZvZs once we hit the business end of the tournament.
Fear not my fellow Terrans (or even Brotoss) hope still remains with a few good men (technically 1 is a Dwarf). The three best Terrans (xGKingiaguz, TARossi and aLtYoonYJ) in Australia all took the long march to City Hunter Chatswood in the hope to stomp some nasty bugs along the way! (YoonYJ was a late withdrawal).
Once again we find ourselves in a SEA tournament with very few Protoss and even fewer of them @ GM level, PorkToT and clan mate oGrNsCo effectively stood alone to defend the honor of a noble Alien race.
As with all City Hunter Kingston Comps registration was restricted to 32 people and as always, the competition was quickly filled, people where then split into 8 evenly weighted Groups.
For those of you who are up to date with the scene youll notice a massive 14 GMs took part! As such the 16 players to emerge from the group stage and advance to the Double elimination stage did not come to much of a surprise.
Group 1- xGKingMaFia, alwaysdryToT
Group 2- xGKingIaguz, EveTigey
Group 3- GoSutgun, xGKingMyuu
Group 4- xGKingpokerface, Echoes
Group 5- TARossi, SQLTtHuT
Group 6- TtPiG, PorkToT
Group 7- SQLTtNinja, cruxEldrid
Group 8- Danmate, oGrNsCo
The Bracket stage of the competition so full of surprises, In the very first Round Danmate defeated xGKingMafia 2-0 and SQLTtNinja defeaedt xGKingIaguz 2-1 in the 1st round of the Winners Bracket, while favorites TtPiG and GoSutgun as battled it out in the 1st round with PiG emerging victorious 2-0.
In the Winners Bracket is saw TARossi carve up the competition defeating xGKingpokerface, Danmate and TtPiG without dropping a single map while in the losers bracket xGKingpokerface went on a team killing spree taking out Myuu (2-1) and MaFia (2-1) but it wasnt all bad taking down Ninja 2-1 thus defending Iaguz's Honor (fyi Honor is important to Dwarves).
However Iaguz wasnt so grateful after exterminating the parasitic powerhouses of tgun and Danmate, Iaguz was in a bug killing mood and pokerface was the next bug to taste the Gimili Terran's Axe.
The Lower Bracket Final was one of the closest series of the day with PiG emerging victorious 2-1. fulled by the confidence of taking out one of the strongest Terrans in SEA, PiG did did what all admins hate, he won the first best of 3 (2-0) thus extending the competition to another best of 3 . With victory in sight PiG dug deep and a tired and sick Rossi (no joke he puked an hour or two after arriving) could not compete, PiG won the series (2-0) and with that the Tournament .
A BIG thanks to Kingston Technology, V Energy Drink, Republic of Gaming and N.Y Saleh for sponsoring the event a big shout out to xGKingBenji and Zepph for casting the event
It was nice to top 3 this one, especially considering I got 7th/8th last 2 times I went to a cityhunter event (which for me is extremely disappointing, if I ain't top 3-ing it sucks).
My pool games were uneventful, mostly played really cheesy so I could go have lunch faster as I hadn't eaten yet that day. I think the best one was vs a silver Zerg, I went 11/11 rax just for bunker pressure. He typed out "big fan btw" and I couldn't help myself, I pulled all my scv's. He almost held it too.
First in ro16 was Ninja. I played really well in game 1 and just ezpz'd, I can hardly remember it. Game 2 I went for a really fast 3rd and got 200/200 at about 13 mins, 3/3 on the way, few tanks some medivacs. I push out on the center of Antiga Shipyard and ninja, who at this point is taking the center expo as his 4th, has only 1/1 ling/bane. About 100 banes. And they're coming in at 3 angles.
Well that's alright, just stim, run back and split right? Except the PC I'm playing on, despite being on all lowest settings, cannot handle all the units on screen and the FPS drops to about 4. I can't spread the marines so they stay clumped and despite having a game basically won (superior army composition, upgrades and economy on a map which favours Terran) I end up getting slaughtered. Well shit.
Game 3 was on Calm before the Storm and I play a bit greedy and lose to the DRG style roach/ling/bane. I don't know why you'd want to do that build up a tight ramp with a wall behind it but then again logic is not something you can apply to certain playstyles so, again, shit.
Next was vs GoSuTgun. Tgun's pretty damn good and my record in tourney series against him generally has me losing so it definitely a good time to engage man mode. Game 1 on Terminus, we both take 3 bases and throw units at each other. I had some crippling drops which led into a decent enough tank push that took out his 4th and then after a gruelling battle of attrition took him out of the game. I remember hoping the whole time that he hadn't snuck another expansion out somewhere (I'd had a brief look earlier but Zerg are pretty damn tricksy). Game 2 on Calm before the Storm, I opened with fast 2 expansions and cloak banshee, he opened for a roach/ling/bane attack off 3 bases (so not quite DRG style, but similar). I barely held it off because banshees are OP but afterwards was able to apply a ton of pressure and 3 base terran is pretty good vs 3 base zerg. Was pretty happy to finally win a series against Tgun.
Next was vs the lone Protoss, the guy with the letters I can't recall what they were. First game was a simple 2 rax which picked off his nexus and he couldn't recover. Second game was standard, he went for a 2 base colossus +1 armour timing and it very nearly broke me, but after I held it off the game was pretty simple.
Next was against Danmate. First game I gutted his drone line early with reactor hellions and then danced a bunch of units around Daybreak until eventually he gg'd out. Game 2 he tried the DRG roach/ling/bane bust and I had 2 sieged up tanks ready for it. GG.
Next was against Pokerface. Pokerface is pretty decent ZvT, he did knock me out last CH event. Game 1 on Antiga felt standard. I made 3 bases early, an arseload of units and the first push gave me map control so I could snipe his 4th. Antiga is a really bullshit map for Zerg and he should of thumbed it down. Second game was Shakuras, where again I took 3 fast bases and pressured with marine/medivac. I did a lot of damage early with that and 6 hellions and proceeded to marine/tank him out of the game without too much difficulty. Shakuras is also a bullshit ZvT map, surprised Poker didn't thumb it down (every other bloody Zerg did!)
vs PiG, former teammate, IEM GZ roommate and old buddy/rival. Me and PiG have a long history of beating each other in tournies (NRG, WCG aus, IEM Kiev, Dox cup 2, a Masters cup or 2, several ESL's, goddamn this list goes on) and I like to think we're 50/50 against each other. Sometimes it look like one of us is much better but then the other guy whips out some brand new technology and balance is restored. Anyway, game one on TDA, I did this CC first into banshee/hellion build which killed roughly a billion drones. a few big armies slam down his throat later and it's GG. Game 2 was on Daybreak. I figured PiG would be conditioned to fear hellions so I made 6 and decided not to suicide them in. After checking replay this turned out to be a ******* stupid idea as PiG was not making any lings. Goddamn. Anyway I lost the hellions badly and did this dumb double drop that took me out of the game. Poor play, was not happy.
3rd game was probably game of the ******* tournament, a grueling 40 min cross map Calm before the Storm slugfest. When I saw we got cross positions I realised that I was never going to be able to push down into his heart, there's simply far too much distance, so I aimed to try and keep him off 4th and 5th through constant harassment and large pushes. I musta killed roughly 80 drones that game but PiG was channeling idra's tenacity from his games vs PuMa on Tal'Darim Altar Cross map from IEM GZ and just wasn't having any of that shit. After I'd mined out 5 bases I realised I had nowhere else to expand towards and I tapped out. I'm not certain how I'm supposed to win that map cross spawn TvZ. Perhaps figuring out a proxy is in order?
Anyway, the event was crisply ran as usual. Good turn out, I enjoyed it.

Macro TvZ, by the end of it, should basically be purely ghost/tank or something that seems ridiculously silly, but actually isn't, because of how snipe works. Also, ghosts trade hilariously well vs lings (you should test it out: 3/3 ghosts absolutely DEMOLISH 3/3 lings supply for supply when you get big numbers). It is in a zergs favour on a huge map, though, probably better off going for like, a basetrade off 3base.
As for the event: Great event, ran really well. I played really disappointingly.. both games I lost vs PiG I could've (and should've, I guess..) won, and both games vs Iaguz were just very sloppy.
Sorry I tried to read the whole article but as soon as I reached the Rossi photo my body just started convulsing uncontrollably until I passed out from sheer ecstasy.
This LAN was awesome! Had a great LAN performance for once, sitting myself in a nice corner was a great decision as i had very few distractions while playing.
was also really nice to meet the Saleh family who were awesome to hang around with and chat!
