The Legend of Zelda Thread "$#@% Skyrim, Skyward Sword for GOTY!"
The latest installment, Skyward Sword is set to be released in Australia on the 24th of November. Around the world, review sites are handing out generous 10/10s, as well as cries of "best Wii/Zelda game ever". Will it live up to the hype and excellence set by it's predecessors?
Please remember to use spoiler tags when discussing Skyward Sword. Yes, I know the game has leaked, but I'm sure some people are waiting for official release
Official Nintendo Magazine: 98% - It's not something we say lightly, but the Zelda series really has never been this good.
Edge: 10/10 - How apt that this ultimate tale of hero-making should see Nintendo's hardware become the console it was always meant to be.
GamesRadar: 9/10 - A perfectly balanced mix of innovation and classic Zelda gameplay, Skyward Sword truly lives up to the Zelda legacy of excellence and offers the most variety of any Zelda game to date. Its swordplay and puzzles are some of the best in the series, and seeing Link and Zelda's first story chronologically is a treat for longtime fans.
The Guardian: 5/5 - Revolutionary on at least two counts, with the best motion controls ever seen in a video game and an inspired reinvention and improvement of the Zelda formula.
Wired: 10/10 - Exceptional visual design and music, reinvented Zelda gameplay, tons of content that doesn't get repetitive.
IGN: 10/10 - This is the Wii game we've been waiting for. Through all of the mini-games and odd sports collections, many wondered if and when Nintendo would ever find a way to deliver a deeper experience that still fulfilled on Wii's limitless potential. Skyward Sword makes good on that promise.
Metro: 10/10 - Revolutionary on at least two counts, with the best motion controls ever seen in a video game and an inspired reinvention and improvement of the Zelda formula.
Nintendo World Report: 10/10 - If you bought a Wii, you owe it to yourself to get this game right away. After all, isn't one-to-one swordplay what made us all excited about the Wii in the first place?
Joystiq: 4.5/5 - Somewhere within Skyward Sword slumbers the best Zelda game of all time. It is choked by a dozen hours of needless cruft; but it's there, a masterpiece entombed by a misguided ambition to be the lengthiest game in the franchise's history. It's still an incredible game, but it could have been the greatest game ever made, and the moments that keep it from doing so are absolutely going to break your heart.
Game Informer: 10/10 - hat fact alone makes Skyward Sword a title that every gamer should experience.
GamePro: 4/5 - A good, well-designed adventure that does much to redeem five years of motion controlled shovelware. When I look back on it, I think I'll mainly remember the combat -- not something I've ever said about a Zelda title
GiantBomb: 4/5 - For mostly better and only a little bit worse, Skyward Sword is the best Zelda game in years, and makes a strong case for motion controls when done right.
GamesTM: 9/10 - After twenty-five years and sixteen games, Nintendo celebrates Link's birthday with a breathtaking voyage through Hyrule with The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword. It's the Zelda the Wii was made for.
1UP: B+ - I believe this to be one of the more admirable chapters of the series, even if at times it feels the developers were unsure of which sacred cows to keep and which to sacrifice.
This thread serves as a tribute to one of the greatest gaming franchises ever. All discussion on anything Zelda related (favorite game/characters, hopes for future releases, I guess you can talk about the TV show if you REALLY want to) belongs here. Have fun posting!

Probably my favorite videogame franchise. I picked A Link to the Past in the poll, but I could never truly have a single favorite.
For me,
ALTTP = MM > LA > OOT = WW > TP = OoX
Personally, I find that OoT has aged rather badly, whereas A Link to the Past is still as beautiful as ever (it also pretty much defined the standard "Zelda formula" to be used in most following games). Majora's Mask is so dark, wacky and different that I can't help but love it. Just my opinion though, I'm sure lots of people disagree!
I still haven't played the NES games. I'm so ashamed of myself

I think it was the story + the whole three day thing giving it a real sense of urgency that does it for me. Only thing against MM was that it was so short t.t
I'm going to have to wait a week or so after release for payday to get SS. I can't wait. It sounds like the game I imagined when Wii was first unveiled. Only five or so years late!
Why do all the good things happen when I'm away on field work? I miss out on stalking Pig/tgun at the Arena LAN, and I miss out on Skyward Sword release day!
In other news has anyone else preordered the collector's edition? I can't wait to get my golden wiimote.

I feel your pain.
I was too lazy to put in a preorder. I better be able to get a copy >.<
I've been clinging to my SS pre-order for like a year now. Was so crushed when it was delayed. But so happy that it's coming in 1 week.
P.S. My faves are A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess. OoT was brilliant in it's time, but about 5 years ago, TP really brought my childhood back.
P.P.S. Minish Cap and Four Swords aren't on the list - both great games.

Me on 24th November: "SYWAAARRDDDDDDDDDDD SWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDD"

I knew I was missing some! Just classify those ones under handhelds too. Minish Cap was great, but super short.
And I agree, while OoT was perhaps more "revolutionary" and makes me feel nostalgic or whatever, I'd rather play TP over it any day of the week.
Console- OoT > MM > LoZ > TP > Zelda II = 4 swords Adventure
(ive never played WW or LtaP :|)
Handheld- ST = PH (never played the GBA or GC handheld games)

I've never played Zelda II, but from what I gather, it's generally considered the worst, right? (Apart from those CD-i games lol)
Highly recommend A Link to the Past! It's probably the biggest + most epic of them all

Hmm, a fully remade lttp with 3D engine could be cool, but I really don't think it needs to be ported again. It's already available on so many different consoles. Would much rather see them work on something new.
I barely tolerated Wind Waker because I found the oceanic navigation to be very, very frustrating. Like if you miss your course just slightly, it's not a simple case of just turning around. You had to do like entire laps or teleport back to a previous checkpoint just to take another stab at it and long story short: it was not a fun or interesting gameplay element. The sailing was just annoying, the treasure finding was tedious. The game was "decent" if you just wanna play 100% linear and go from start to finish, but it wasn't as enthralling as the other titles which make you want to discover secrets.
I never got around to playing Spirit Tracks 'cos I was terrified that they'd do the same thing with a train...
A Link to the Past is actually my favourite of all time. Cute hit it on the head, you can't go past how amazing this game STILL looks to this day. Currently playing Ocarina of Time 3D on the 3DS which is pretty cool
As far as the Wii Zeldas go I actually loved Wind Waker. I loved how they just went in the cell shading direction and managed to pull off a pretty sweet looking game. The little "tunes" when you're combo hitting a monster was awesome, as were the boss fights. I liked the sailing and never had too many problems with it, I got stuck at one point when I didn't know what to do next (I refuse to find walkthroughs for Zelda games) and EVENTUALLY figured out you needed to drop into a hurricane or something. I loved the little wand mechanic, the sounds and the facial expressions and how everything felt like a Zelda game even though it looked different. I finished it 100 percent. The final boss fight was epic as.
I played Twilight Princess once all the way through and haven't touched it again. It looked good, it felt very "Zelda" but turning into a Wolf and howling turned me off vs the wind waker. The shadow beasts were cool, got kind of tired when I had to kill a whole bunch to get out of those little red fenced areas. I like what they did with the fairy and the plot twist (Midna etc) and the end boss was pretty cool (except for the very very end, that was lame and SUPER easy) but yeah definitely didn't like the wolf thing, it sounded terrible too. I dunno, I can't really put my finger on it but I DEFINITELY preferred Wind Waker over Twilight Princess. Never really got stuck, it was pretty obvious what to do next. It's a good game, but yeah. Sorry Dox.
Needless to say I am going to buy Skyward Sword and thrash it, especially if half the reviews are true. In pretty much every Zelda, the same thing happens (Ganondorf is coming oh noes) but you have your "tool" which is generally what the game is named after (Wind Waker, Ocarina, etc). If the "tool" is fun to use and I love using it I think I enjoy the whole game more. ALL the items should to be cool (and different) and fun to use by the looks of things, and I love a good boss fight with fun mechanics. No doubt there'll be something I need to throw bombs at until it's stunned and I can smack it a few times with my sword (lol).
Sorry for the rant, really hope Skyward Sword is amazing. Long live Zelda!
