Wish they actually had the event at Melbourne. It's always puzzled me why Sydney gets priority over so many events in Australia. Maybe distance is shorter?

There would be a whole number of considerations which would come into play.
Venue quality and quantity
Public Transport
Airport size and standard
Location relative to national/international guests and spectators
Weather (not as urgent for indoor events)
Surrounding attractions
Surrounding business infrastructure and resources
Accommodation
Now a lot of these are offered just as competitively in Melbourne as Sydney.. end of the day it often comes down to preference and venue availability and suitability for any given event.
There are also often other things which affect an event's location which are not necessarily made public. One of the biggest obstacles for major events though is finding a suitable venue at an affordable cost which ticks as many boxes as possible. For all we know this Sydney venue had more boxes it ticked.
Some of the reasons it is in Sydney I guess:
- Largest SC2 fan base
- Most of the top Australian players live there
- Largest city in Australia
- ACL PRO Staff live there
- Blizzard HQ is there
