[PvT]What is the best way protoss can deal with mech?
Good Morning Everyone,
Mass Thors have always puzzled me as a protoss player, against decent terran players I have always struggled to find the ideal unit composition and answer to deal with it. Unfortunately I do not spend as much time as I would like on this game but given the limited opportunities I get, I tend to try and make the best out of it.
In this game I was hoping to pressure with my initial zealot + stalker + MSC to see what the terran was up to and maybe pick off a supply depot if I was lucky, however I had forgotten to build a pylon. >.< Supply blocks and bad macro kind of made everything worse, but assuming I was on top of all this, what am I meant to do against a mass thor terran and what would be the ideal composition against him.
The first engagement cost me because I thought I had storm and I spent most of that engagement spamming T with no success, and everything went kind of downhill from there, after scouting mech,
What should of been my initial reaction? Air - voidray and tempests with zealots to buffer or simply good upgrades + immortals?.More bases? Constant Harass + Aggression.
Some tips, things you consider in the same situation and criticism would be much appreciated
Also in regards to playing Protoss, what are some things you're trying to improve on at the moment as I feel I have hit one of those ceilings :/
So first off you are way behind since he is macroing far better than you. You really need to use your chronoboost more especially on probes otherwise there is no way you can keep up to the income of a terran with their mules.
The 2nd thing is you have to scout. You don't scout for a long time and when you finally get an observer in his base you hardly (don't think you did at all) look at it. You have no map vision so his army just appears in your base and you have no time to prepare and get into a decent position. Try and do a quick scout around his base with your obs see what he is doing and then park it at the front of his base so when he moves out you see it. Also get a probe on each watch tower. these will help a lot.
Your composition was fine you just didn't have enough stuff because of poor macro. you expanded way way earlier than he did so should have been miles ahead. but he catches up in workers because you don't have constant production nor do you chronoboost your probes.
just look at the army values -> 4800 resources to 5750 plus 700 resources of scvs. that difference added with the no map vision = gg.
you can also focus the marines instead of the thors with your collossi.
Takes a long time for them to build up that Mech army. Long enough for you to get 3-4 bases and a buttload of Tempests/Carriers/Void Rays. Any spare minerals can be thrown away on Zealots to help stifle their mobility/absorb damage.
While I play zerg so I can't help on specifics some of the general stuff also applies
As soon as you know its mech you know that you can be very greedy and you want to get 4 bases asap
Make walls to help control hellions and from there you can make almost any high tech units
Also don't forget warp prism same way you would against a BL infestor zerg from WoL
Alright thanks for all the constructive criticism, have completely forgotten about map control and map vision. I did see the thors with my observer but that might of been too late.
if vs mech i generally do these two things and then a bunch more stuff depending on what i feel like doing the core responces tho are a) get a base ahead b) 2 robo. From those you can pretty much do whatever else and win
Yeah, its all about map control and harassment. Same thing happened to me, was not keeping the enemy terran in line so he rushed thors/hellbats by the 8 min mark. Thankfully, when I scouted his first thor, I just expanded quickly and got an immortal/stalker army w/ upgrades. When I got my 4th base, I eventually added in colossi/HTs and won. I haven't played PvT long enough to test mech vs protoss air so yeah.. :P
Was playing lobo and when i went mech I lost to mass tempests. Its very very very hard for terran to deal oracle/phoenix into mass tempests if they went mech. It almost makes mech completely unplayable. And of course the way to beat tempest easy is to mass bio.
Vikings didn't fare well vs them and thors just got stomped.
My instant response to scouting mech is always to get a small force of stalkers to deal with hellions. Then i tech into charge zealot immortal. this works kind of OK in the lower leagues i am in but i can see its effectiveness weakening as i face tougher opponents. I currently am completely shut down if they mix widow mines into their composition, all the zealots are crushed so quickly.
i was watching desrows stream the other day and what he did was basically a few archons zealots and stalkers and a warp prism with 2 immortals in it. just drop the immortals on top / behind the thors/tanks to achieve a "flank"
