[SG LAN] Singapore Starcraft League December!! [Pre-Thread]
SSL Dec Pre-thread:
Hey everyone, I am already planning the logistics and arrangement for the SSL Dec and I need your help. I need feedback and ideas for certain areas so let me know what you think
Tentative Date: 27th Dec, Monday, 6pm - 11pm
Q: Due the weekends taken up by Christmas (Sat) and New Years (also Sat), I am considering holding it on a weekday night. What do you think?
Improvements/Suggestions for December
Q: We did the live casting outside the shop. What did you feel about that?
Q: I am considering changing the tournament format to double elimination. Yes/No?
Q: I am considering changing the map picking format to map elimination. Standard pool of 7 maps chosen, players get to eliminate 2 each for Bo3 and 1 each for Bo5 finals. Coin flip for first map of choice, then loser's choice. Yes/No/Counter suggestions?
Q: I am considering changing the qualification system. Tournament will start with 64 slots, single elimination, Bo3, ONLINE. The final 16 will then be invited to come down to Raygun to play for SSL Dec. SSL will remain as a LAN event as I strongly wish to encourage offline tournament experience for our local players. Online 64 slot qualification? Yes/No/Counter suggestions
Q: What else would you like to see at SSL Dec
DISCLAIMER: I am asking your OPINION, but don't take this as a place where your "suggestion" becomes what I "must" do. In the end, I will make the choices based on what I and my team feel is best for E-Sports and the community ^^
p.s. Prize Pool for SSL Dec is currently at $1,000 SGD. Hope that excites some of you! =)
im in favour of most of the points above. im just wondering if there will be any sort of seeding in the online qualifiers. would hate to see something like oxy v revenant or something before the LAN event.
Agrees with Xeen. Most people dont wanna grind up the ladder. And yeah! SEED US! The map elimination format seems nice, but which of the 3 maps goes first???

Sounds good, the holiday days are definitely out for lots of people!

Q: We did the live casting outside the shop. What did you feel about that?
I feel separating the live casting and the competition venue is good because it reduces any unfair strategic disadvantage conferred by inadvertent spoilers during casting. That being said, it was a bit soft and muffled and thus hard to hear the cast outside the shop.
Q: I am considering changing the tournament format to double elimination. Yes/No?
For sure!

Sounds good.

Consider Sunday the 19th? Might be abit rushed for qualifiers but otherwise 27th is a perfectly logical day to hold it, downsides would be that weekdays might just be harder
Improvements/Suggestions for December
Q: We did the live casting outside the shop. What did you feel about that?
Unfortunately wasn't there to witness it, but generally in an open area, as long as sound quality can be sorted out, it should be good! and casting without the need to worry about giving away strats would be possible
Q: I am considering changing the tournament format to double elimination.
Definitely a fairer format, and could make for some awesome comebacks

That'll be sorta like GSL style, could make for more strategic play. Alternatively I've got the Xelnaga/Shakuras/LT, ban one map, then loser picks system for the team sg qualifiers, that'll be relatively fair too.

Qualification and seeding would be fairer imho. the ladder rating system has some serious loopholes, unless you can use blizzard's ELO but even then, there's issues with that too. online qualifiers is a good idea.
Q: What else would you like to see at SSL Dec
I second the cowbells. For shure.
p.s. and who are the generous sponsors this time around? awesome stuff man!

Blizzard's ELO ranking is pretty much solved to be completely based on ladder points (with division variance), so that's barely any better, really. Agreed that qualifiers are the better option.
Looks like I have the community feel for the formats. Let me discuss it with my sponsors and partners and I'll release the tournament information for SSL Dec soon (probably on the weekend when I get back from Indonesia)

Weekday is OK. However, I believe the start time should be like 7:30 or 8:00 PM as I believe some of us, like myself can only leave office around 6:30 PM, otherwise I have to take half-day leave
Improvements/Suggestions for December
Q: We did the live casting outside the shop. What did you feel about that?
live casting should be good as long as it is not too loud for the players to hear the casting
Q: I am considering changing the tournament format to double elimination. Yes/No?
double elimination is awesome

map elimination sounds good
