Hello SC2SEA community. I have been lurking around the forums for sometime, sadly I forgot my login credentials so I had to make a new account. I am going through the college or university apply process.
I have always wanted to travel to AUS. What a better opportunity than going there for college? I am looking into some schools but it seems ANU or Australian National University seems like a perfect fit for me. However I had some questions about it if you knew any of the answers. Thanks for the help!
What is the general academic reputation of the school?
How difficult is to get into the school? For foreigners?
What is campus life like?
Because I don't live in AUS I don't know if there any sites like College Prowler. Essentially it has statics on each school in the USA. Is there any similar website for AUS schools? Thanks much!
There are university ranking website. They are all based on worthless statistics that have nothing to do with reality, so I won't link them here. What course are you wanting and what are you looking to do with it afterwards? The science people I have met from ANU generally strike me as being good at what they do. But that doesn't always reflect on what the undergraduate quality is like.

I was directed to the site after reading it was ranked as 6 on the top language schools, Chinese most specifically and either another language or education
ANU has a big focus on Asian studies and is pretty reputable in that as far as Australian universities go. This might be due to the fact that it's located really close to Parliament House and Asia is really politically important. Aside from that ANU has particular strengths in the natural sciences (with several nobel laureates), law and politics, as far as I know. ANU is primarily a research university, so the research staff/student ratio is really good.
I don't know how difficult it is for foreigners to get into ANU but quite a decent portion of the campus population are foreigners, mostly from Asian countries.
Campus life is quite lively during the semesters, especially if you live in an on-campus residence. There are the residential halls, which are owned by the university, and the Unilodge residences. The residential halls tend to have more of a community atmosphere but they can be a bit noisy at night. I notice Unilodge seems more popular amongst foreign students though. Aside from that there are lots of clubs etc you can get involved in around campus.
Canberra is basically made up of 2 types of people, students and public servants, so it's a pretty good place for studying and it's safe. Environmentally it's great and a really serene place to live.
Those are the positives. The downside is that it can get really quiet outside of the campus on particular nights (non-club nights), and it's very quiet on campus during holidays. Also, apart from maybe parliament house and the general lake view, there's not much to see or do in Canberra. So if you wanna stay in Canberra make the most of campus life

ANU gets the vast majority of its reputation from its really really amazing postgrad stuff
Thats not to say it isn't good for undergrad but its strength is in theoretical studies so if you are looking at software engineering better to look elsewhere from what my friends told me.
Its very popular with foreign students and heard that foreign student applicants are up for 2013
They took a dip because of an attack against a girl that happened little while ago but i'm unsure about the details.
The campus is big and very green so its a lovely place to be. Lodging varies in quality but all rooms are single (no sharing) afaik. Its lively and clubs are nearby too so Titan is dead on there
Though don't agree with not much to do in Canberra.
Can't help you with rankings cause generally Australian students will seek out unis based on what they want to study / where they live or want to live. We can help you more if you can tell us what major you wish to pursue
