We are more than stereotypes. We are adventurers and doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs, journalists and lawyers, scientists and students. We are smart, ambitious, and competitive. We are gamers.
We believe society has forgotten how to play.
Play keeps us sane in our daily lives. Play keeps us curious, imaginative and directed. It teaches us to learn from our mistakes, to constantly improve, and to stride forward – battling through failures on our road to success.
Play develops relationships and communities. We have fond memories of growing up playing games with our friends and siblings. The gaming experience bonds us together now, as it bonded us then. We discover friends, partners, and spouses while gaming. We game with our children. We transcend international borders when we play.
We believe that our game, StarCraft, is the chess of our generation. StarCraft requires the dexterity of a pianist, the mind of a chess grandmaster, and the discipline of an Olympic trainee. We believe that our game, StarCraft, is as dynamic and exciting a spectator sport as any other. We fill auditoriums to cheer on our favorite gamers. Most of all, we believe our game, StarCraft, is a beautiful platform for play. Whether you’re a veteran, a newbie, male, female, a parent, a student, or a total nongamer, you too can join in the fun.
Our community is smart, supportive, funny, irreverent, international, insightful, and intolerant of bullsh*t.
One gripe I have is that Starcraft seems to get compared to chess a little but too much for my liking, usually by non-chess players. I know a lot of chess players who just don't have the reflexes for starcraft, and a good deal of starcraft players who don't have the brains for chess.
Consider the following...
Chess is balanced.
Do you see a problem now?
Why post this? Un-needed man :/ I kinda went off at you before I edited but I overreacted cos I've seen a few useless posts from you. That manifesto is inspiring. Makes me wanna get on SC2 and play play play.

Actually to the best of our knowledge, chess very slightly favours white, assuming both players are evenly skilled. When playing black against an equally skilled opponent, your objective should always be to draw the game. Thats why world championships always have a series of games, rotating colours. Winning with black in these circumstances is like "breaking serve" in tennis.

I find the different explanations for the imbalance really interesting. This is the problem we always face I guess - you can usually see fairly clearly from the statistics when something is imbalanced, but trying to work out why it is imbalanced can take 150 years ;p
More people bad repping me because I pointed out the flaw in Day9's statement?
It is ridiculous to compare chess to StarCraft 2. Not only is SC2 not a balanced game, but it a much more complex game than Chess, and requires a lot more effort than it does to win chess.
Chess is a mentally challenging game. In essence Sc2 and chess requires using your brain. In chess you have to plan your moves ten steps ahead and visualize possible scenarios for every move. Sc2 requires mental multi-tasking, in depth timings, intuition and of course good strategy. It is wrong to say sc2 is not a balanced game since there are always solutions to solving problems that you come across in the game.

Which is why they've been patching the game since the beta?
I like your sense of reasoning behind balance.

Do you believe the original starcraft was balanced? I would argue that apart from protoss being a little under powered in high level play that SC2 is relatively balanced, however the metagame has shifted in favour of terran at this stage. This occurred in Brood War as well with the win rate of races reaching 80% at some stages (without any new patches being implemented) due to shifts in metagame. Arguably this is what is happening now, so it is not fair to cry imba or OP when these shifts occur.
Agreed on your point, but for different reason. Day9 obviously wanted to compare the intellectual, sportsmanship and logical parts of chess to those of SC2. But that has nothing to do with generations. He shouldn't have called it "chess of our generation". Chess as a game doesn't define any generation except for maybe 5th-century south and central Asia elite. What was chess of our parents' generation? D&D? And berfore that? Imho, that claim is not thought through well.
